The more time you spend exhaling, the more time your lungs have to perform oxy/co2 transfer. That certainly buys you time for your BA usage, but the calming affect cannot be underestimated. Oh, and for those who have been scuba trained, you'll find there's loads of overlap because panic in the deep is just as deadly as panic in the heat.
