I use to work for a potato research facility. Your doing a great job. You do not need that many potatoes for seed. You can look at one potato, and each eye is a growth sprout. Then you cut that potato so that each sprout gets paired with each part of the growing season. Larger potatoes can have at least 6 sprouts, so one potato will produce six plants. I do wish you were near me. So many people do not know this about potato farming.

Becky, I really love that you don't hide when you make mistakes. So much cooking content around only shows the successes and the best parts. I really enjoy watching your videos even though I can't currently garden, I love to learn about all the vegetables and techniques and everything. I'm in Scotland so I think the PNW climate is one of the closest to what we have too 😂 just wanted to say I appreciate you. i live alone following my parents passing last year and when the house feels too quiet I like to throw on your chatty videoes and it feels like I have a friend over ❤

Hi from Japan! Becky, I love watching your videos and despite living in a small apartment, you’ve inspired me to prepare freezer meals that have made the hustle and bustle of Tokyo life so much less stressful. I have a hint for storing strawberries from the store (or homegrown). Put them in your canning jar and screw on the lid. Place them in the refrigerator, they last for weeks. I have some in my fridge that has been there for two weeks, and they are just as good as the day I put them in there. I don't wash them first, only when I am ready to eat them. I love strawberries and am so glad I found this method.

When you turned on the oven, I said to my self "she didn't check the oven before preheating" and thats because coming from a hispanic household WE ALWAYS have something inside the oven at all times. I bought grow bags for potatoes too this year. We are trying a few alternatives to regular gardening too. I bought a pretty obelisk to grow sugar snap peas on and it's going at the corner of our house in the flower bed. I'll be putting garlic in grow bags too and place them all along the flowerbed. My husband just built a trellis bed that's 3 levels. Two more raised beds to build now.

Didn’t your momma tell you to always check your oven B4 you turn it on girl? 😋 I not fond of frosting either. You’ve inspired me so much. I’m doing freezer meals and my hubby bought me an instant pot yesterday from Costco for A$139.00. It was on sale. I waiting for my replacement seal to turn up for my pressure canner as they sent the wrong size. I want to start a garden too as I love preserving homegrown. It’s so satisfying. Becky, I have a money-saving recommendation for the cattle-panels: Skip them. Cattle panels are very strong, which makes them perfect for heavy vines, like pumpkins, squash, and gourds. Use your cattle panels for trellis-arches for those heavy vines. When you're at the tractor supply (or even the big-box home/hardware/warehouse store), in the same section where you find cattle panels, you'll also find other fence materials. There's hog panels and there's goat fencing and there's... well, there's lots of options for fencing for just about any critter you want to raise on the farm... and those lighter-weight fencing options are a lot cheaper AND they're usually sold in rolls of much greater than 8'-16' length. I got a 50' roll of green powder-coated wire fencing (4' width) that I cut into 10' lengths with wire-snips. I hung these from the eaves of my porch and used them for tomato trellises. My cherry tomatoes were very happy to have plenty of room to grow and grow and grow. (Indeterminates, don''tcha know.) The smaller wire trellis held my vines just fine, without failure and they CO$T A LOT LE$$. I'm not saying don't buy cattle-panels. I'm just saying don't waste them on tomatoes. Use them for your heavy-duty veg vines and buy lighter-weight fencing for your toms.

I have a very small area to grow. So anyway I can grow up is a must. Last year I experimented using old tires. I painted them white and planted potatoes in hay, as the potato vine grew up I added another tire and more hay. By the end of the growing season I was up to 6 tires. When I harvested potatoes had filled the inner tires. I got a huge harvest from a 2 ft. Circumference. So fun and productive. Also the potatoes were so clean because of just growing in the hay.🥰

Becky, your channel is bar none my favorite on RU-vid. You do a little bit of everything. You’re always real, educational, fun, funny and motivational. I’m not a big fan of decorating RU-vid channels because they push expensive ideas. I live in an apartment in Minnesota with a pretty size-able west facing deck. I have my planters ready to go. Becky, I absolutely love that you don’t edit out the bloopers. You keep it real. My mom used to store potato chips in a large Tupperware bowl after they were opened. Then she would store it in the oven “out of sight out of mind”. One morning she was hurrying to get ready and making biscuits. She forgot to take the bowl out of the oven when she preheated it. Yep….it melted all over the oven. The gracious teenager that I was, I let the oven cool and peeled all the plastic off the surfaces. You brought back a great memory of my mom!

I have to share. I had calf huts up out in the yard. We had goats, a mini donkey and a couple of ponies. The ponies and donkey were rehomed and as a result we needed to move the huts out ot he area. WELL, we found GOLD! The compost and hay over wintered and broke down into amazing compost for my garden. The area they were all in is going to be our garden. IT IS AMAZING STUFF out there!! I am incredibly excited to see how things grown out there. We also have chicken and goose manure to add into it. I am so excited and can identify with the bales breaking down. It makes amazing stuff and yes helps retain moisture. I can't wait to see how your potatoes do, I may plant some next year! Thank you for sharing your content with us! You are amazing!!

Hi Becky. I think I have commented on your channel before on my experiments of growing potatoes. I grow first and second earlies in pots in my back garden so I can grab new potatoes during the summer as I need them. For my main harvest, I planted my favourite second earlies (Charlotte and Marfona - the latter being excellent for mash, roast AND chip potatoes in the UK - and King Edward, Cara and Wilja for main crop). The main crop was planted 4 years ago on poor soil under 18” of fresh woodchips. I harvested most potato plants throughout autumn and winter leaving one behind. The first harvest was scabby - expected- the second from the volunteers was so so. Last year was exceptional! Each year I’d get 4” of fresh wood chips dumped on top of the large permanent bed. Last Christmas, before I’d even harvested half of the hidden potatoes, my woodchip man dumped four loads of woodchips 6ft high over the entire 20 x 80 ft bed. I just thought “oh well” 🤷‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️. The mound of woodchips 5 months on has dropped to 4ft high. There are potato sprouts all over the mound. Everywhere! Got a little scorched this weekend by a frost and I’m scratching out woodchips twixt the potato sprouts to place on my vegetable garden paths. I’ll let you know if my forever potato patch works this year! 😂 We get tomato and potato blight every year, here. My woodchip potatoes have never got blight. The soil under the woodchips now is 18” deep of black compost riddled with white fungi strands that could be a damaging white fungus or a network of something special. Don’t know. But potatoes are no longer “scabby”. Best wishes for your comparative potato growing experiments. 👍🏻

@amandar7719 2 года назад
Oh…. Forgot to mention…. whilst collecting the woodchips to top up the paths, I came across duck eggs!!! So my mound is like a mountain range of peaks and valleys interspersed with potato leaves and wild duck egg nurseries! 😂

Greetings B'ecky, Josh, all the Animal babies and Acre-Homesteadnicks. You asked a math question!!! As an old mathematician I will gladly answer the pound cake question. If you double your recipe for pound cake you get 1 pound of sugar, 1 of butter BUT 1.1 pounds of Flour and 1.5 pounds of eggs. So it ALMOST works out but not quite. I enjoyed watching you in the garden throwing potatoes about. 🙃 Great fun! All the Best JIM, Oaxaca

When I grew up my parents always planted potatoes cut in half with eyes in mounds/hills in garden. My husband and I had good luck doing it. I may try and plant some in a small area this year since only for me.

Many years ago I moved to NC and learned about different planting, one was potatoes from a potato farmer. I hope I’m recalling correctly Took the potato and cut it open leaving at least two eyes in each section and dusted with…? Forget it’s name. Planted it on top of soil and covered with a few handfuls of soil…making a hill. Then as it grew, I’d add more soil to the hill. I had pretty long rows of potato hills. Harvest was fun! No matter where I put my hands out pop a potato! No digging! 🥔

"Well that cutting board is toast!" I'm sure there's no pun intended, but you're still entertaining and informative. I LOVE your videos and attitude. All the best to you!

Hi. With leggy tomatoes, you can plant the stem in the ground and the roots will start growing off the stem. Many gardeners do this even if they’re not leggy to help speed up a good root system. Also, why don’t you cut your seed potatoes to make them go farther? I cut mine into 2 or 3 chunks (depending on how many eyes) and once I let them scab up for a a few days they work amazing and just as well. Also I live near you (Auburn) so I’d assume a similar grow zone 8b I believe.

I'm back rewatching this video and when you mentioned the Ruth Stout documentary, I paused the video and googled it. I just finished it and my heart feels so warm. I am planting my potatoes, 3 kinda of squash, cucumbers, corn, and green peas tomorrow. Then I have to go and pick up some green bean seeds because I didn't know that I was out of them. When I get home I plan on planting them also. Then in about 2 weeks my peppers, cabbage, onions, spinach and lettuce should be ready to go in the ground too. My garden will be all in by the middle of the month and I should have sprouts of stuff beginning soon.

Always a fun typical Becky video! To make it easier on their growth, potatoes really should be planted with the eyes facing up. I love your new tomato trellis set up. When planting your tomatoes, I hope you don't fall for that "egg in the hole" thing. Better to just use bone meal (good for planting potatoes also!). It's a good time to plant tomatoes and peppers when you have 5-7 days straight of nighttime temps in the 50's. Love pound cake! Silicone baking pans are the best! No browning on the sides, baked goods pop right out and easiest clean up 😊
