Your 38mm Canon is the 2nd gen AF35M (Autoboy II). I have the first gen version of this camera & can say that it is one of my favourite point & click cameras. My version includes focus lock (pre-focus), giving you a bit more control & allowing you to achieve sharp focus with every shot. The lens provides a wonderful colour rendition, making colours come alive, & provides a wonderful amount of contrast. If your 2nd gen is as good as the first, it is a camera that should stay in your collection. Another great point & shoot camera is the Minolta Hi-Matic AF2. While the Minolta retains manual film advance & rewind, it offers parallax correction. I would say that the Canon is a far better camera than the Minolta, but it is still a great camera. I should also note that I am also own a fantastic Leica C3 & the results from the Canon AF35M still impress me. The Leica offers a far superior lens, but the Canon is a great low-price alternative.

Thank you for your video! I just got my Nikon Lite Touch Zoom 120 ED from an antique store, based on your recommendation. I'm looking forward to using it!

I have two of Olympus mju cameras. Terrific little things but not worth $300. The plastic cameras of these vintages all suffer from the same problem: brittle aged plastic. The battery door on one of my Olys simply broke in half when I recently replaced the battery. The used market is silly right now.

Love the video!! Great and super relaxing as always :) you should do a video on the zorki 6! Not many videos on RU-vid about that range finder, and honestly the best Russian rangefinder to be ever released!

Hi Nigel, many thanks! Your videos are much appreciated! Two small cameras of this kind are at my disposal: The Canon Canonet QL19 GIII and the Canon Shureshot 35ML. The Canonet QL19 is by the way much less pricy than its QL17 counterpart on the used market. Both feature a lens with aperture 1.9 and five elements for low light situations. The Canonet‘s lens has a focal length of 45mm, the Sureshot 40mm. Both are very nice and fun to use. Using them with 35mm black and white film, color negative film, or slide film bring back fond memories back from the 1980s, when as a teenager I was shooting film on SLR. Have a nice day, Ralf

I once bought my husband a Nikon One-Touch just to carry around with him in 1986 on sale for $75 (50% off). He quickly took some pictures which when developed came out simply beautiful and astonishing, so I ran back to Macy's to get one for myself, but alas, they were all gone. When I read up on that One-Touch, the reviewers were raving about the wonderful 28mm f/2.8 4-element "planar" Nikkor lens in that camera (or was it a 35mm lens, I can't really remember), but when we look at those prints today, even 35 years later, they still look absolutely stunning. That was one amazing little Point & Shoot Nikon for $75.

There were some very nice point and shoots around at that time, and the Nikon was certainly one of them! Thanks for looking in!

After watching your video in january, I bought the nikon 120 ED (mint for 25€) and I must say you were more than right ! However, I gotta say that autofocus is pretty accurate, the more you use it, the more you get used to it. (only with picture in low light without flash, you get your so called "happyaccident", I love that expression, that really is the feeling ). As a matter of fact, it has become my "always in my pocket" camera, as it really is handy. So versatile with the zoom and incredibly sharp during daylight, (the F min is 5.3, cautious to that), it does wonder with very good contrasts and colors ! I am used to my Nikon FM + nikkor 50mm 1.8, that NEVER disappoint me but if, just like me, you need something to capture precious unexpected moments, thats really is THE camera. I recommend it 100%, really underrated, so from my heart, thanks again for making me discover this gem ! Just a question, I like making double exposure on my other cameras but since this is a point and shoot, is it possible ? If yes, how ? Thanks again !!!
@zenography7923
@zenography7923 3 года назад
From memory, I don't think there's a double exposure feature on this one. A great little snapper though - glad you're enjoying it!

Nice video! Several very good Canon Sure Shot cameras out there. A couple of my favourites are the Sure Shot 120 Classic (very sharp zoom lens, cool retro looks) and the Sure Shot Ace (tiny little waist level viewfinder(!) and a very capable fixed F3.5 lens).

The great world of p&s! Personally I've had dozens, it's still hard to make a ranking. Anyway, here's mine: Olympus XA4 macro (plastic) Olympus XA2 (plastic) Olympus Trip35 (full metal) If you want autofocus, then: Olympus mju_II (plastic) Leica mini / zoom (full metal) Yashica T 4 / T5. (plastic) Canon Autoboy (plastic) There are contax, canon TI, Ricoh Gr,.....

I like my Cosmic S3 with the 40mm f4 lens. It needs no batteries. Winds by lever. Focus by symbols ie 3 people for groups, skyscrapers for infinity, and exposure by symbols of the weather ie sun for 250th of a second cloudfor 60th. Aperture is set manually by Din/ roct 20 which is equivalent to about 100 iso which gives you f8. Apertures shutter speeds and distances in Feet and Metres are shown around the lens so you can set everything yourself. The aperture is a bitfiddly so I set mine to f8 . Which makes it aperture priority! There is a hot shoe for my attachable Helios 28 flash. I preset the distance to the 3 people symbol which is about 4 metres or 12 feet. The results are excellent, sharp with great colour from the little T-43 Lomo coated 3 element lens. The film counter flicks to zero automatically when you change film. I like the Russian Cosmic Symbol so much I have 2.!!

Another great Sunday morning Video, Nigel. I haven't had much experience of automatic, or semi-automatic, point and shoot film cameras. Your video has inspired me to try and grab one to get my grown up son to take some pics of our Grandsons. He's a great lover of Black and White, and mainly shoots his digital pictures in B&W so I would be interested in his take on it. Happy days, eh?

Another great video thanks! I've had a Canon Sureshot AF Mk2 38mm since the mid 80's, now on my second one. Two often underrated features are the self timer that doubles as a pre-focus control for off centre subjects and the fact that it uses infra red to auto focus so can pretty much get focus in total darkness!

@zenography7923 3 года назад
I was surprised by the accuracy of its focussing - slow, but definitely sure!

Any of the Ricoh FF/AF series should be worth $250+ but you can regularly find them for $20-$100 still. Honorable mention for the Pentax PC35-AF(M) cameras, so underrated.

I use thw Yashica AutofocusMotor 38 f2.8. A beast of a camera loud, clanky and not too good looking but it takes pretty good photos. It even has a prefocus lock and takes AA batteries. I like that the camera strap is on the short side makes. Is it good for street? Well maybe if there is lots of traffic or construction going on. It does come out with very nice shots which is the main pint for me.

Nice selection. I think another great alternative to the MjUii is the Minolta AF-Z, also a 35mm f2.8. I bought it to replace my old MjUii that I sold. The lens isn't as sharp or contrasts as the Olympus, but that's nothing that can't be fixed in post, and for only £40 in comparison, it's definitely not £260 less of a camera.

Hi Zeno! Just want to tell you I love your channel. I’ve been following a lot of photography subs but yours has rapidly become my favorite. Quick question, what’s your opinion on the Nikon 50mm series e?
@zenography7923
@zenography7923 3 года назад
Got to be honest, I'm not keen. It's not a bad lens as such but it's nothing particularly special. I rate the Zuiko 50mm 1.8 much higher, as is the Pentax 50mm Takumar 1.8 - both available more cheaply than the Nikon - and the Carl Zeiss Jena 50mm f1.8 is simply unbeatable, by far the nicest 50 I've used, ever!

Only yesterday I was looking for a tripod mount super 8 handle for my new big lens. I only stumble across the sure shot complete with fresh ISH batteries and half used oops film , I know they are a obscure make of bat that I put in things, can't for the life of me remember what I shot on it. Another roll of film for the mystery pile.

I just received a Canon Sure Shot Mega Zoom 105 this morning, except I can't seem to get it working. Film has been loaded, a winding noise comes from the camera when the battery is put in. But the little counter stays at zero (0) and nothing happens when I press the shutter button :( Any suggestions?
@zenography7923
@zenography7923 2 года назад
Are you sure the film is loaded properly? It sounds like it hasn't been picked up by the winding mechanism. I'd try loading again to begin with.
@sarabartczak9885
@sarabartczak9885 2 года назад
@@zenography7923 Thanks for following up! I loaded the film in the camera, put a new battery in, then opened the back to see if the film was winding properly. It looks as if the camera will automatically wind about 5-6 exposures' length then stop when the battery is first put in. However, the counter stays at zero (0) on the screen and the On/Off buttons won't react... It might be a lost cause

Honestly there are a ton of very cheap point and shoots out there. The whole point of a point and shoot for me is that its fast and simple. There for I really would recommend the more modern p&s of the 2000s like Olympus Mju V or Canon Prima Super 155 (and many more). They are all build out of Metal and feel 10 Times better than your all plastic 80s and 90s cameras. And the canon has a ton of Features with safeable settings and a flash which you can turn off all the time. When you upload the pictures to instagram you cant tell the difference between your T* coating on Yashicas and a Standard Nikon or Canon p&s.

The Nikon ED is a terrible name for a camera, especially one with a zoom as protrusive as that. Liking the new lets have a closer look at it of this segments. I a big fan of partually broken half price equipment and stuff that works with or can be persuaded to function on AA bats , it takes 4 of them to run something that is supposed to have chunky lithium things,. I had much enjoyment out of my sure shot super zoom something, It used to be in my Flickr album "camera mug shots" untill Flickr got extortionate and required me to thin down my 4000 images to 1000.
