The Three Fingers lookout was built on a mountaintop rock pinnacle on what is arguably considered to be the most difficult building site in the world. The structure, and key route improvements, were completed by Bedal / Engels and Frank Benesh in the 1930s.
Today, it remains a challenging, but extremely rewarding objective for those with endurance and the proper mountaineering skills.
Ascending to the top is like entering another world, as the panoramic view, all the way from Canada to Oregon, looms ever larger.
The lookout is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and maintained by a local mountaineering group, however, time has taken its toll. In the not too distant future, a storm may reclaim this barren rock pinnacle, but for now, the lookout stands testament to the audacious spirit of some of those who came before us.

Did Three Fingers in the Late 1970’s. Don’t think I could make it back with my old knees. Thanks for sharing

Thank you for sharing your experience! It's always interesting to hear about past adventures. While it might be challenging now, there are still plenty of other ways to enjoy the outdoors. Wishing you all the best!

Good video. I was up there many times in the 80s when the road was still open. Climbed the north and middle fingers also. Don’t go up there without an ice axe and the knowledge to use it.

How on earth did the build this without falling over the edge? No helicopters in 1930. Wild.

Wow! That is just crazy. Any idea how long this lookout was manned, if at all? Keeping a lookout supplied on such a site would be ridiculous. Love all your videos, but this one really has me shaking my head.

The lookout is still there? I thought it was torn down years ago. Apparently, I am wrong. I climbed the main peak about 50 years ago. Nice little climb, but I never dreamt to checkout the lookout.

It is still there. I spent the night up in the look out about 30 years ago. Had the pleasure of going on a hike up Sauk Mountain with Harold Engles just before he passed. What a legend he was for constructing that (with Harry Bedal).

How experienced of a climber should you be?

The difficulty depends on the exact conditions and snow coverage, but there may be a couple short sections with some steep snow around Tin Can Gap. Having an ice axe and basic knowledge of self-arresting would be a good idea, as well as possibly crampons or microspikes if the snow is expected to be firm. Otherwise, nothing about this hike is technical. The final climb to the lookout is barely even a class 3 scramble and the ladders are very secure, though of course use caution around the cliff edges.

Breathtaking! I have looked at a few videos of this hike before, but they never captured what you have here. This is just incredible. What a rush it must have been to step inside that lookout and see those views.
