Solvent free gel is terrific for cleaning your brushes while you work too

I love Gamblin G-Gel for Plein Air and the Gamblin solvent free gel for in-studio. I let the Solvent-free sit out for an hour prior to use and it works much more like the G-gel.

Excellent! The difference between gels that "seem" to virtually be the same when you are at the art store is invaluable to me. Watching your process while you were painting and how much (actually, how little) you used - also invaluable for my information base. I learn something new in all of your videos. Thanks so much, Vlad!

Hi Vlad, many thanks for introducing me to the oil (huile) painting process. I have watched three of your vlogs and find them rich in basic and advanced content. So instructive for a newly retired amateur in France. After renovating my home to a point where time can be found to quietly view your tutorials. Sourcing materials as I understand the reason for each item. Thanks, merci. A'bientot from Cleguerec.

Thankyou, this was a great help. I avoid the smell of solvents and find water mixable oils good for the first layer, no solvent just water.

This did help 100 percent. I've never used mediums before. It's gonna take some trial and error, but I think I understand.

Here where I live I use Corfix oil paintings gel yet. All the imported materials are so expensive here. Each time being worst to explore other alternatives for. Hugs from Rio de Janeiro city!

you might like OId Masters Maroger (Black Oil and Mastic Varnish), OM Italian Beeswax (Beexwax and Black Oil), and OM Black Oil (cold pressed linseed oil and Litharge(boiled lead)) all dry overnight and can be intermixed.

Hi! I’m assuming the Gamblin galkyd gel has a solvent smell because the solvent- free doesn’t? 😃

Have you used Fast Dry (FastMatte Gamblin) made with refined linseed (flax) oil? For under painting? Thoughts?

3:00 PST I love your teaching style and your painting skills. I missed what type of varnish in your under painting mix. Can I use quick dry linseed oil and Gamsol? Thoroughly enjoyed watching!
@openstudiod

Thank you! I would recommend varnish and gamsol 1:1. Fast dry linseed will yellow in a couple of years.

Hey Vlad! Thanks for the responses on another video of yours! The videos are great and very informative. I am wondering though, how long do you wait between each layer or do you paint alla Prima basically all the time? Thank you and have a great day!
@openstudiod

About 10-15 min between the layers

Hi, thanks for this. I just have a question, 16:40 isn't solvent-free gel considered fat (fat over lean rule) won't using less in the proceeding layers break the rule making it lean over fat?
@openstudiod
@openstudiod Год назад
I don’t think so. You want to use less of it at the finish layer to make sure the hue of your colors are steady. Gel will reduce it… makes it flat.

How are these gels different from regular linseed or other oils or thinners? Are these mostly useful for plein air studies because I have been using only oil color and thinners for quick paint
@openstudiod
@openstudiod 3 года назад
Gels and thinners are two different mediums for different purposes. I, personally, do not consider the thinners as strength forward medium but more like a base for making your special medium. For example, Gamsol is a base thinners or one usual part of mixed medium. It is also in some cases a brush cleaner - but NOT a stand alone medium. Gels, on the other hand, are straight forward mediums.
@ankith05
@ankith05 3 года назад
@@openstudiod I basically use solvents to tone down the canvas and clean the brushes and only use colors directly from the tube with no medium or linseed as a medium sparingly , for glazing and stuff.using more fat mediums - for the end building up layers- “fat over lean “ and not more different mediums on one painting.I would definitely be trying the impasto medium . Thanks for the video
