Three Kiva is a stabilized pueblo located in Montezuma Canyon along County Road B146 about seven miles from the Perkins Road (County Road B206). It features a reconstructed kiva with a roof and ladder access, accessed by a short foot path. The remainder of the pueblo is visible as stabilized wall bases, with the upper parts having collapsed. About 1,000 years ago, Three Kiva Ruin was part of a large and thriving community that took advantage of the resources that the canyon had to offer. Extensive excavations by a team of archeologists from Brigham Young University revealed 14 rooms and three kivas, a ramada (a roofed shelter with usually open sides) working area, a trash mound, and a possible turkey run. Large portions of this complex have been stabilized, but only one of the kivas is reconstructed. Here is a link to a BLM page that has more information about "Three Kiva Pueblo" www.blm.gov/vi...

Thanks for taking the viewer inside and then emerging from the kiva. The experience of going from almost total darkness in the kiva to viewing the night or predawn sky as a person emerged from the kiva must have been remarkably spiritual.

Yes it was...Just imagining what the ancient people felt and experienced as they lived in the area was very special as was the whole day as we drove, hiked and explored. Thanks for the comment and viewing our video...Much appreciated

Cool. There's some of these underground dwellings in Overton Nevada. I know where some are, by "Little Valley California" that no one else knows about. I've been trying to get someone to get the directions to them before I pass away.

Thanks; I've been to Chaco Cy. in the winter & often wondered what the inside of a complete kiva feels like.

It's probably not an exact recreation as the "benches" along the wall were where people would sit. From what I see, it appears that the roof is too low for people to sit in the niches/benches. Let me know if I'm wrong. I've been to the canyon, but before any real archeology was done and no recreation of an actual Kiva was done. We are going back there this year and it will be my first time since like 1978... My first was around 1970... I remember seeing these things when they were still raw from history... I'm looking forward to seeing what they have done.

You are probably correct. My take on all of this is at least there are efforts to preserve the site. Please share your thoughts when you visit the site. Thanks for commenting and watching our video...Much appreciated!

Nice video that's a huge kiva compared to kivas on Hopi the way Kivas are placed are when you look out the top when certain stars align with the opening it acted as a calendar as well when to begin certain ceremonies when to start planting

Thanks and appreciate the additional info you provided. I am about to post a video of the "Montezuma Canyon Road" that 3 Kiva Pueblo is accessed from.

@@cactushillhe is prob lying since I’m Hopi and that is a small kiva compared to our kivas since we have dances in kivas and it is huge compared to that kiva unlike that kiva we have coat hangers and benches but Pueblo kivas not Hopi they’re kivas are HUGE! Bigger than Hopi kivas and that kiva combined and when there’s not enough space then the men of the Pueblo kivas break down the kiva and make some more space.

Taking pictures/video inside sacred spaces such as a kiva is offensive and disrespectful to the tribe

Michael...Thanks for commenting and viewing our video. One thing though...You assume that I did not ask for permission before I photographed that location.

@@siital51 Thanks for commenting and viewing our channel. The Kiva we visited is open to the public so I am not posting anything that is not already in the "Public Domain". Also, this Kiva is on BLM land which are public lands and open to everyone (www.blm.gov/visit/three-kiva-pueblo).

It doesn’t look original. It’s been restored so that takes most of experience away.

Mike...I did mention that the Kiva had been rebuilt in the video. For us it really didn't diminish the experience. We will be traveling to Southeast Utah and Southwestern Colorado later this year to explore more Native American Ruins throughout the region. Thanks for commenting and viewing our channel. It is sincerely appreciated!

If it hadn’t been restored, you would have experienced the thousands of other kiva ruins across the region. Go check out some of those.
