Forge welding a three legged base looks more difficult that it is. A base like the one shown here is great for a variety of blacksmithing projects from a fire tool stand to candle holders.
My name is John Switzer, I operate Black Bear Forge, a small one person blacksmith shop located in southern Colorado. My current focus is shifting away from commissions and customer orders and towards education through these videos on RU-vid. Thank you for watching

Hey John, I can't thank you enough for posting this video when you did. I have been struggling for about a month now on how to make this very base. I am making a 14th century floor standing candle stand with that very base out of half inch square stock. I have been having nightmares about how I was going to forge weld three pieces in the coal forge. Your simple solution (and I would imagine period solution as well ) just made my life monumentally easier. I thank you sir and thanks for doing what you do.

My main forge Is an induction and the price is very reasonable considering($1200-1500 maybe a lot Les if you gamble with an eBay model.). My small scale unit can liquify -3.5 lbs of copper which is serious amount of heat all for less than 40¢ in electricity. My machine is the same some companies sell for 4K you just need to shop around.

Cool stand. I'm turning in to see what it's going to be used for next week. My top three guesses are: 1: a full on metal Christmas tree 2: a giant pot stand used for cooking 3: a blacksmith's coat rack

John, I like the three-legged stand. Your video makes it much easier to fabricate. You really like to keep us in suspense on the next episode! A hint, if I might, on getting the legs spread out equally. With the three arm thingy you retrieved with the ladder, draw a circle radiused from the center about out where the legs on the stand should be. Stand it on that and you can eyeball if they are equidistantly spread.

Happy to have these basic and intermediate level core skills to look at after the surgery. Sadly no time for me to go to my shop for a week or two al least. Spentthe whole week leading to today in it though, as I still could. Hope that I will be back there soon enough too..

I'm very interested in the topic of induction forges for the blacksmith's workshop. I think if you got one owerful enough it should be viable for a profesional even on thick stock. Maybe after hoarding a bunch of jigs and coils it could even be economically competitive. It will have it's drawbacks, but it also offers no noise, no startup, doesn't spend any fuel while not in use, can heat work without moving away from the anvil (this could be vey useful for small stock and forge welding) and with the right coil you can heat stuff anywhere, perhaps even better than with oxy-fuel. I may invest in one some day to try. Recently saw a video from DF in the shop where a three leg stand was made from a single bar by bending one of the legs around and welding it into the center before cutting it into two so you don't need to do a drop tongs weld.

I love that moment after you get the pieces up to welding heat, you line everything up and give it a few quick taps and finally pick everything up as one piece instead of two. It's like majic yo me STILL and somehow it still doesn't seam possible!! I'm hopefully hoping finish re assembling my forge soon and it should have more then enough heat to achive my first forge weld. It almost had enough heat before I dismantled it, but now with a slightly larger gas inlet I am very hopeful 😁 Thanks for sharing this, I'm wondering if you could get it into a gas forge with a few gental courtesy bends 🤔 or I could stand the forge upright and balance the piece on the front of the forge. As heat rises it could work 🤔😅👍👍

@robertwhitney2232
@robertwhitney2232 3 года назад
What you don't see in all the videos on blacksmithing, is the smoke that is created by the coal fire and fire hazards, not to mention the carbon monoxide poisonings in your living quarters. Personally, I think a stand by it self building, with a lot of fresh air is the safe thing to do.
@Seelenschmiede

You definetely need to have a very good chimney to get out the stuff Robert mentioned. The rest depends on the materials your basement is build out of.
