I was privileged to be a Door Steward on the Settle & Carlisle Santa Special from Carlisle to York on 18th December. This was the first day of the York Christmas Markets, which I'm told was VERY busy. Beside helping happy passengers to their seats and offering assistance, I had time between stops and at York to take some video.
On 46115's outward run, it was held at Howe & Co's siding whilst awaiting the late running Leeds train to get well ahead. We passed over Ais Gill Summit at high speed, probably helped by the diesel.
After the water stop at Hellifield Goods Loop we were pretty much on time, running along the aire valley to Whitehall Junction, Leeds, and then via Stourton and Castleford to Sherburn in Elmet and Church Fenton en route to York.
On the return run were were keeping time until Hellifield where we departed around 25 minutes late from the loco change. With a 47 on front and back we caught up ten minutes after the Settle stop for a 15 late arrival at Appleby. We would have been 6 mins late into Citadel, but were held just outside the station for 5 minutes or so.
York was very crowded both with the people from 3 steam excursions and lots of regular photographers attracted by the three trains (and the Midland Pullman that morning).
In theory we should have departed at exactly the same time as the LSL excursion to Kings Cross. For whatever reason this didn't happen, Sherwood Forester's train departing around 30 minutes late.
The second half of the video is made up of clips I took of the passing scenery on the Settle & Carlisle Line on the outward run of the Settle & Carlisle Santa Special. I was staying safe and neither leaned out of the carriage windows nor against the doors. Instead, I'm wedged in the vestibule to steady myself!
The times shown on clips are for guidance only and shouldn't be taken as definitive.
