Steam and 68s at York:
3 LMS Locos!
Views from the Settle & Carlisle Santa Special
Scots Guardsman,
Sherwood Forester
and 44871.
18 November 23
I was privileged to be a Door Steward on the Settle & Carlisle Santa Special from Carlisle to York on 18th December. This was the first day of the York Christmas Markets, which I'm told was VERY busy. Beside helping happy passengers to their seats and offering assistance, I had time between stops and at York to take some video.
On 46115's outward run, it was held at Howe & Co's siding whilst awaiting the late running Leeds train to get well ahead. We passed over Ais Gill Summit at high speed, probably helped by the diesel.
After the water stop at Hellifield Goods Loop we were pretty much on time, running along the aire valley to Whitehall Junction, Leeds, and then via Stourton and Castleford to Sherburn in Elmet and Church Fenton en route to York.
On the return run were were keeping time until Hellifield where we departed around 25 minutes late from the loco change. With a 47 on front and back we caught up ten minutes after the Settle stop for a 15 late arrival at Appleby. We would have been 6 mins late into Citadel, but were held just outside the station for 5 minutes or so.
York was very crowded both with the people from 3 steam excursions and lots of regular photographers attracted by the three trains (and the Midland Pullman that morning).
In theory we should have departed at exactly the same time as the LSL excursion to Kings Cross. For whatever reason this didn't happen, Sherwood Forester's train departing around 30 minutes late.
The second half of the video is made up of clips I took of the passing scenery on the Settle & Carlisle Line on the outward run of the Settle & Carlisle Santa Special. I was staying safe and neither leaned out of the carriage windows nor against the doors. Instead, I'm wedged in the vestibule to steady myself!
The times shown on clips are for guidance only and shouldn't be taken as definitive.
Any observations are my own and not intended to show any authority and may show my misunderstanding.

Hi, Les! Trying to catch up and this was too cool not to go back and watch. LMS... steamers... too cool! And a ride-along to see that grand countryside!

Spot on Les and nicely captured, a busy day for you with three steamers into York but bedlam on the platforms I would think, still you managed very well and I enjoyed your on board footage just managing to see myself and car at Aisgill, cheers 👍

Loved the bonus section. A lot easier traversing Blea Moor in a carriage than lugging a rucksack and tired limbs towards Whernside.

Given your working involvement with the train and the crowds at York, I'm amazed that you managed to get so much good stuff there.. Enjoyed the onboard filming - the lowering skies enhanced the views from Ribblehead viaduct which, in better weather, can be disappointing.

Guess which bits I was going to scrap. Glad I kept those bits in. Once the train was underway there wasn't a lot to do. Amazing how different it was wedging myself steady in the vestibule away from the doors! I wouldn't trust those doors even with the extra bolts - which had suffered a little from West Highland 'summer' weather.

Most enjoyable Les, the onboard segments bought back happy memories of various steam trips through the years. Unfortunately when my wife and I went on the Carlisle to Skipton route we were diesel hauled. When your train left Carlisle I noticed some familiar characters at the end of the platform!
@LeslieGilpinRailways
@LeslieGilpinRailways 11 месяцев назад
Thanks!. Yes there were some of the usual characters! It was a horrible day weather wise on the S&C with very few out to see the train

I would of gone to York but already arranged a day out elsewhere Having seen a few videos I am not sorry I missed going with the station so crowded. If I had gone I would of gone away from the station for a better view. Good 2nd part on board at proper speeds rather than 25mph Enjoyed that

Thanks. I did get off the station but my chosen spot (the carpark alongside the original nrm building) was a building site with high fencing.

@@LeslieGilpinRailways They are starting work to make all that area for pedestrians and taking the road bridge down. Once that is done it should be a good place to see trains. Last time I went they had not done much. Sir Nigel Gresley is taking over from a Deltic on 23rd so I will have a at look what's going on

@@LeslieGilpinRailways Ah no worries, email works for me if that’s okay with you. It was very busy indeed, don’t think I can say i’ve seen anything quite like it before. Nonetheless, a great day. Shame you missed the Midland pullman and the 2 37’s earlier on.

The view from the window on the Carlisle to Settle route was filmed beautifully, maybe because it avoided the usual head out the window technique. One of best I've seen.

I had noticed that 4 of the 5 excursions running on 18th would visit York, so I thought 'That is worth a follow.' That meant passing a miserable day in comfort with RTT and Railcam. You managed to be on one. I couldn't get a good read of the sign at 14:54 - too blurred, even single framing. Can you recall what it indicates? The S&C lived up to reports of being bleak and miserable in bad weather. I saw the congestion on the platforms you mentioned via the York Railcam. Not the place for a photographer. Anyway, it looked like you enjoyed your day out.
@LeslieGilpinRailways
@LeslieGilpinRailways 11 месяцев назад
Its the Ais Gill Summit board - there's one on each side of the tracks but both are rather worn these days. Although it was miserable up on the tops, there was lots of steam! Even some of the regulars at York said it was busier than you'd expect.

Unexpected red light on the front of one of the Black 5s when it came in ecs.
@LeslieGilpinRailways
@LeslieGilpinRailways 10 месяцев назад
The train was being shunted from Holgate sidings into the platform before running diesel hauled, steam at the rear, to Gascoigne Wood. There the train reversed to head south steam first. They seem to do that a lot.

@@LeslieGilpinRailways I got that but without rewatching I think I had spotted that for the short trip into the station the head and tail lights were lit and the wrong way round. That was what surprised me. It seems to be the modern way, I saw the same thing subsequently on another video of a loco swap at York.
