In this short video I'll share with you three of my favourite Daniel Smith granulating watercolours, as well as using granulating medium with acrylic inks to produce lovely textured effects.
The materials I've used in this video are as follows:
Daniel Smith Watercolours
1 - Raw Umber Violet
2 - Moonglow
3 - Sodalite Genuine
Winsor & Newton Granulation Medium
Daler Rowney FW Sepia Ink

Moon glow is so lovely, but has a fugitive pigment and the red disappears. OMG Sodalite Genuine, obsessed.

Jury's out on Moonglow (and Shadow Violet) at the moment due to Kimberly Crick's lightfast testing (there's a video on here showing that the red pigment fades in thin washes)... but you can mix your own versions using single pigments which are more lightfast, and it's really fun to experiment. Any granulating pigment mixed with a non-granulating pigment will separate and give interesting effects, sometimes with really surprising results. I love the ink texture you achieved here. I've never used granulation medium - and now I'm going to try it! Thanks.
@IngridHillArt

It's such a shame about Moonglow, I've always checked the lightfast rating when buying paints to make sure they are lightfast. I hadn't realised until very recently that the excellent rating shown on the Daniel Smith website is based on their own tests results and not the ASTM rating! I hope you have fun using the granulation medium with inks, I really like the textures they create when used together.

I love it too and was really disappointed when CragRaven mentioned people were having issues with it because I hadn't heard that before then. I must confess I haven't seen any problems myself with paintings I've used it on but I'll probably stick to enjoying using it in my sketchbooks to be on the safe side. If it helps I believe Raw Umber Violet and Sodalite Genuine both have an ASTM Lightfastness Rating rating of excellent.

Hi Anne, I agree it's a shame not all of Daniel Smiths watercolours are available in 5ml tubes, to be honest I rarely buy larger tubes but I really like Raw Umber Violet. Thanks for the tip about Moonglow. I always check the lightfast rating when buying art materials and on the Daniel Smith website it shows it as excellent. I hadn't realised the rating is based on their own tests results and not the ASTM rating.

Thank you. I'm interested in Raw Umber Violet and I got an idea of sorts. Unfortunately, the production quality of the video is a big impediment. You should show it to someone knowledgeable who could help you fix the problems. From what I can see, it was recorded at too low a data rate and too low a resolution. This could be due, unfortunately, to an obsolete camera or phone. Maybe the problem has been made worse by too high a compression rate before transmitting to RU-vid. What you could immediately fix: - Zoom in on the painted area from the start. Leave some edge, but narrow the view down to the essential. - Provide enough lighting (cool white) and make sure it's diffuse and placed so that the shadows of your hands and arms do not spoil the view of the "raison d''être" of your video. - Make sure that auto-focus is off, then manually focus on a sharp mark on the paper and leave it at that. - Same for camera color balance: set to manual, then select a setting matching the lighting. You can verify this with a gray piece of cardboard (about 50% gray), and record a few seconds of video at the same distance and zoom that you will use for the video. your properly color-adjusted screen should show the true gray color and shade when playing back the recording. Just trying to help... 🚑😊

Moonglow is a terrible color to use. Sadly Daniel Smith has suggested that the Primatek range are highly lightfast, and they have taken advantage of the myth believed by many artists that mineral pigments are always permanent. Not true. Moonglow fades so fast it needs to be treated like Alizarin Crimson as a color that does not belong on an artist's palette. Some Primatek colors are okay, but Moonglow, Sicklerite, Rhodanite, and Tiger's Eye are very untrustworthy. Sodalite is another color with problems. It tends to darken in the tube over time and this darkening effect seems to be irreversible. Fresh it is a beautiful blue, but old tubes become quite blackish. If it darkens in the tube then I would never trust the color in the artwork to not also darken with time. While I like the idea of the Primatek range, seeing the results of independent testing has put me off trusting them and I have increasingly been getting more Schmincke colors as replacements.
@IngridHillArt
@IngridHillArt 2 года назад
Hi thanks for the info on the Primatek range, I hadn't heard of lightfast problems with them before. I only use Moonglow in sketches and studies now because of the lightfast issues which is such a shame because its a beautiful colour. I've just bought a Schmincke Tundra Pink to try.
@artistjoh
@artistjoh 2 года назад
@@IngridHillArt There has been quite a bit of controversy over the Primatek line over the last year or so. An independant lab tested the turquoise colors and determined that the turquoise mineral was in low percentage (maybe 15 or 20%) and that the color must be coming from an undisclosed other pigment, possibly cobalt turquoise. They observed that some minerals, such as Amazonite don't produce such a bright green when ground into pigment so must be boosted with other pigments. Daniel Smith put out one of those sort of statements that said they make the paints using minerals but did not deny there are additional pigments in the colors. Rhodanite goes brown as it slowly oxidizes upon exposure to air, and some other of these colors do fade as independent lightfast testing demonstrates. Moonglow and Sicklerite appear to be the worst at fading (sorry.) You can google "Primatek controversy" to find some of the online discussion on the subject.
