Hi Rob. I bought a lathe tool set from Banggood after watching your previous videos. I'm pleasantly surprised by the quality, it's very good value - thanks for putting me on to them, cheers.

I buy a lot on Ali express, very satisfied. But be honest for hobbyists, the quality is very good. Once you have a business you can always go to the local dealer, because you will settle that in the account. The Chinese are a real blessing for hobbyists.

Rob I have several different size round boring bars, and to life simple I got some round steel stock, drilled for each boring bar, milled a flat and drilled and tapped for appropriate grub screws. Now they all fit the same round boring bar holder and all are centered and ready to use. John

Thanks Rob, ordered this set today after seeing your review. Always handy having additional boring bars, and at the price, I couldn’t resist. Now the wait........ Thanks for all your videos by the way. Great info and very relevant for me as I’m running the same lathe as you. Cheers

Hi Sig, Those boring bars are GREAT ! I use them often and the inserts are holding up very well. Three very useful sizes. One of the best things I've ever got from BG. How do you like the CQ9325/HBM450. Seen my mods page for it? users.tpg.com.au/agnet/cq9325rev3.html Cheers Rob

Just a tip: Only have the boring bar sticking out of your tool holder a bit more than your desired depth of cut. Boring bars experience lots of tool push due to the length so only stick out what you need to reduce tool push and increase rigidity. Lastly, If you are removing 20 thou, for example you may divide it up in half or fourths that way your final cut is the same as your first. Good Luck!

I have some solid carbide boring bars that take much smaller inserts than that: CC*T03's. Just as an apropos to how small you can go with carbide boring bars. (Beeing made from solid carbide does not actually have anything to do with taking a carbide insert in this case, it is just to get them stiffer since they are really small) The bar is a 4mm diameter: C04G-SCLCR03. It does add 0 to the price though

The holders I received are negative rake holders, and the inserts are positive rake with no chip breaker and for cutting on one side only. Not happy with the cut. Going to modify holder to have top of insert parallel to the bed lathe and see how that works. Of course if my holder would accept rotation no mod would be needed. Thanks for the review, appreciate it. They are a bargain.
@Xynudu
@Xynudu 6 лет назад
Hi JIm, The holders I reviewed are negative rake. They do that to allow minimal metal below the carbide insert so it can align with centre on small jobs. The inserts I got were slightly positive, which is what that insert number is. If the cut is bad then it could be something else as mine and others using these had no problem. You must have the insert point at or slightly above centre, definitely not below, or you will get harmonics and possibly chatter. Cheers Rob
@jiml9944
@jiml9944 6 лет назад
Thanks Rob. I will experiment with the largest one for my amusement. Yes, I always bore above center. Will also try some other materials and speeds-feeds. Cheers.

By using cutting fluid on unknown mild steel I got some very nice finishes boring 1" holes at 500 rpm and .008 " DOC. Feed was about .0035 "/rev. Used largest bar, un modified. Insert looked ok after a dozen passes. Cutting fluid made the difference, at least on this material. Did not try higher RPM , which would favor carbide.

Great review, kinda want to buy a set, but tied me hands down, mainly because most of the accurate holes I want are in the range of my reamers & I rarely use a boring bar, which probably means some job needing one will now turn up!
@einars899
@einars899 6 лет назад
A reamer will not correct any lack of concentricity. A boring bar will. So the sequence is: First boring bar, then reamer.

I have a similar Banggood boring bar set laying around to review. Also a 7,10,12mm set. Mine came with Mitsubishi inserts. I must say doing a review feels a bit redundant now :) ps. carefully check the coating on the insert pocket. The 10mm I have has some bubbles on the surface. Not something you want underneath a insert.
@Xynudu
@Xynudu 6 лет назад
Mine don't have that or any issues. I half expected Mitsubishi inserts to arrive with this, as comments indicate some people get them. Whether they actually are Mitsubishi is the burning question ;) Cheers Rob
@Rolingmetal
@Rolingmetal 6 лет назад
I've send an email to Mitsubishi but they never replied. I suspect they have some of their inserts made in China and selling them with huge profit margins :) They look pretty legit: goo.gl/Yq5S7i goo.gl/oeeYnm Here you can see those bubbles I was talking about. goo.gl/AyVuLb
@Xynudu
@Xynudu 6 лет назад
I expect they probably are legit. Banggood don't sell fakes from my observation. The box is totally different to mine. Hmm. I see what you mean about the bubbles. My 12 mm bar is OK in that respect, but the overall finish is not as fine as the two smaller sizes from the other manufacturer. Rob
@Rolingmetal
@Rolingmetal 6 лет назад
Yeah those two small once looked great with the scales printed on. None of the boring bars I got have scales. Looks like Banggood is buying from different manufactures.

Hi Rob. I use cnmg tips which are similar shape to the ones you have there although a little bigger. To use up the opposite cutting edges I bought a MCMNN1616H12 tool holder. You could probably get a holder small enough to fit your tips and so double your use of the tips. Ideal for facing & chamfers. Nice review btw. regards from the UK
@Xynudu
@Xynudu 6 лет назад
Hi Gary, I wondered about that. Thanks for the tip (no pun intended). I will see what's available to take the insert. Should be ideal for what you suggested. They are sharp little inserts for carbide, and seem to work very well on light cuts. Cheers Rob

that's excellent! so one carbide insert can be rotated one time once it gets dull right? how many DIA 23mm x 36mm deep holes in aluminum do you think you can get with both sides of 1 carbide insert? I'm not asking for any precise estimate, just throw me into some ballpark, do you think I can bore 100 holes (DIA 23mm x 36mm deep) with 1 carbide insert? or maybe only 10? I'm waiting for my 1st lathe ever, and I have never worked on lathes. so I am totally blank, and hence I'm asking dumb / trivial questions.
@Xynudu
@Xynudu 2 года назад
Yes. You can buy holders that use the other two corners as well, but it's a bit of a compromise as it won't do corners because of the wide angle, so only really good for facing and full length cuts. The boring bars are super great, really excellent and the range is perfect, doing a wide range of diameters down to very small. I like and use these a lot. Cheers Rob

@@Xynudu I have just ordered the 7mm smallest boring bar, so that I can bore smaller holes, as well as big ones. would you buy the bigger one as well because I drill 23mm x 36 deep holes in aluminum all the time? or just using that 7mm will do the same job?
@Xynudu
@Xynudu 2 года назад
You should use the biggest boring bar that will fit the hole to reduce flex and harmonics. This is particularly true the longer the boring bar overhang is. It is a good idea to have a range of sizes. Cheers Rob

The surface of the outside diameter of the sample should be smoothed first, and the spindle speed is too slow you need more rpm for small boring bars.
@sigmundsakoman7448

Hi Rob, yes I had seen your mods page, great stuff. I remember seeing another mod with allowed for a manual crack handle which mounted to the spindle in the gear box casing which looked great and be real handy for threading. I’m real happy with the lathe, had it many years now. Only mods I’ve done is the extended handles similar to yours. Considered a vertical mill mod but never got around to it. My biggest gripe is with the gear set up. So much mucking around in changing gears in order to do various threads. I do need to get a live centre as I’ve just used the supplied the dead centre to date. Also wouldn’t mind a quick change tool post, purely for convenience. Any recommendations on a suitable live centre and QC tool post Rob?
@Xynudu
@Xynudu 6 лет назад
Hi Sig, The belt adjuster mod is probably the one the lathe needs the most. Makes things a LOT easier. I could afford a replacement lathe, but I like this one so much it's never going to happen. I can't recommend a QCTP as I don't use them. Mainly because they reduce rigidity by way of the increased overhang and extra joints etc. As far as live centres go, I've bought four Chinese ones in various sizes over the years (all below $40) and never had an issue. A long centre section and small body diameter are a good thing to look for, to reduce tool/post restriction when working in close to an end. Fat ones can be a bit of a bug bear. Quality has always been good on these. Cheers Rob

Hi Bluey, They take the CCMT060204 insert. Either of the ones below will fit: www.banggood.com/10pcs-CCMT060204-HM-YBC251-Carbide-Insert-Titanium-Coated-Carbide-Cutter-p-1055821.html?rmmds=search&cur_warehouse=AU www.banggood.com/Drillpro-10pcs-CCMT060204-HM-YBC251-Carbide-Insert-Titanium-Coated-Carbide-Cutter-p-1139720.html?rmmds=detail-left-hotproducts__1&cur_warehouse=USA It should take you a very long time to wear out the ones supplied, given the relatively low loadings generally put on boring bars.
