Measuring sleeve length yourself (all the single ladies) - Hold the rolled up measuring tape in the hand at the end of the arm to be measured. Take the tape and pull it up to the shoulder seam. Look at the number on your wrist at the point that you want the sleeve to reach. You have measured a sleeve on yourself, have a glass of wine with your cats to celebrate. ;)

Omg! I'm watching this on my TV but I can't comment from there, so I had to pause and pick up my phone so I could post... Staci, I almost choked on my own spit when you said not to let anyone tell us we can use water because spit has something special! And, the fuzz in your mouth is something special! Omg! HYSTERICAL! Had me laughing so hard! Then kept talking with the fuzz in your mouth, moving on as a professional does in these cases. Haaaa! Thanks for the laugh! I so needed this today!!! Lol!

Finishing has been well thought out and designed into the instructions. I have been knitting for a long time and this is the BEST men's sweater pattern I have ever knit. I love this tutorial and the finished project is gorgeous! I'm feeling brave with my newly rekindled knitting skills (grandmother taught me when I was about 12, she died 3 years later, and I put down the needles too terrified to try knitting without her!) Fast forward many years later, I've picked up crocheting and started knitting simple things again. I'm definitely adding this sweater to the list of upcoming projects. And the broach - breathtaking simple and beautiful! Love it!

I am making this sweater/coat for each of my three daughters. They each chose their own color of the Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Bulky. Because I have had trouble in the past counting rows in something this big, I have decided to knit the three rectangles all at the same time on a circular needle (not joining them, of course). It seems to be working just fine! When I get to the sleeves (the triangles) I plan to do the same thing. Now I know that the back and two front pieces are gong to be EXACTLY the same length. If I survive all three sweaters, I may even make one for myself. Thanks for all the great tutorials, patterns, etc.

Hi Staci- wrote to you a bit back about using another brand of yarn to do this sweater.. I did manage to finally finish the sweater using a beautiful claret by Lionsbrand - First sweater I made in 30 years- and the first time I actually assembled it myself... I Love It! and so does everyone else that sees it... ( not perfect setting of 1 of the sleeves but good enough for my first try) Thanks so much.. you made this easy for me to accomplish!!! was going to send you a picture but not sure how to do that on youtube!

Genius pin! The perfect project for this still beginner (after 6 pullovers). It's simple and easy to assemble. So true that certain wools become different in character from their unwashed states! Paton's Dreamtime merino (pre-shrunk) just collapsed after I'd put it all together. It lost all elasticity and somehow jumped up another full size which doesn't work for a loose knitter at all. Thankyou Very Pink!

Very nice sweater, Stacie. Weather appropriate for Texas cold winds in February. :) I do enjoy the stylish class of that closure pin. A way to keep track of the rows: Get some yarn of a contrasting color. Cut it into 4 inch pieces. Knit and count 10 rows. Begin the 11th row. After 8 or so stitches, take some contrasting yarn on a tapestry needle and stitch under the "v" in the previous row, the 10th. Tie a single knot. That way you don't have to recount nor do you have to count to a high number. It works easily for me. Happy Knitting.

awww...I get it! for the wool blends to work for the 'split together' it must have at least 50% wool to work. I got the word 'felting' you used and from what I studied, felting requires you to have at least 50% wool or animal of choice to felt. Yay!

I love, love, love this sweater! What a gorgeous, classic design. I do have a question about the stitch, though. Can I reverse all the knits and purls so that i am knitting every other row instead of purling every other row? (I find knitting much easier). Thanks.

You can swatch it to see how it looks...I think it's going to look a little different, and your right and wrong side rows will be reversed.

What an inspiring video...this is going to be my first sweater, just ordered the yarn. One thought, if I wanted to use a worsted weight yarn for a lighter weight sweater, would it be difficult to adjust the pattern? That would be a great new video!!

Linda - using a different weight of yarn and changing the gauge would require an entirely new pattern to be written! Unless you are very comfortable with pattern design/modifications, I don't recommend it. Sorry!

Hello Staci! I have a question: Would you say that knitted in 75% wool 25% acrylic, this sweater is warm enough to wear as an outside sweater? If you don't know that's okay but I want to make an outside coat for early autumn and I really love the simple, stylish look of this cardigan. I'd be using a fingering weight held double. Maybe if I go down a quarter of a needle size? Oh and: How much more yarn would a button band require? Thank you very much and I hope you're having a great day.

Yes - a wool blend that is mostly wool, in this big sweater, will be a warm sweater. I can't say how much yarn a button band might use, since I haven't knit it myself, sorry.

Hi Staci! Love all your videos, you make knitting seem so much less intimidating to a noobie like me! When I decided to learn to knit my ultimate goal was/has been to make a sweater, and this pattern is just screaming at me to do it! Im planning on buying the same yarn you used to be on the safe side, but I cant decide what size to make it. I am a 35in bust so is it safer to go with medium? Or small? I like oversized but i dont want to be swimming in it either haha! Thank you again for all your lovely videos!

Hi Ashley - it's really up to you and the fit you prefer, as well as the amount of layering you typically do. I would probably go with the smaller of the two sizes, since I live in a warm climate and rarely layer very much. :)

Hi Staci, I was wondering how to get the clean edges when knitting the pockets. I found some untidiness :( So if the WS is ending with a PS, when I move my work around on the WS to do the KS, I get to see some untidiness on the stitches at the edge.

Ananta Murti - I can't offer you any tricks for tidy edge stitches, it just takes practice and actively paying attention to the edge stitches as you're knitting them. The pockets are not much knitting - if you find that you're unhappy with any stitches, I recommend ripping back a few stitches and reknitting them until you're happy with the outcome. Good luck!

I think I know the answer here but I'm asking this to double check I'm right. Say I want to knit this but don't want something heavy or warm. I'm after a lighter, more 'floaty' swishy kind of thing. I have finer wool and finer needles and knit a swatch. My gauge comes out as exactly half of what is recommended. If I knit it, my finished thing will be half the size it should, correct? So, if I double every measurement and double everything given in the pattern with my half-sized gauge, will I end up with something the right size or will it go a bit weird?

WindInMyWings - in theory, yes, but I have never knit a garment using this idea, so I can't say for sure how it's going to come out. Hi Staci, isn't it possible to knit the 1x1 "rib" on the wrong side of the work and knit across on the right side? I personally prefer knitting over purling :)

I know I'm not Staci but I did this (reversed right and wrong sides with this mock rib stitch) on another project and it looked good to me. I don't see why you can't use either side for the "right" side as long as you like the effect. I have no idea if you still care a year later but that's my opinion.

Hi, Staci . I just made the gauge and it has 3 stitches and 5 rows in 1inch. Should I change the size of needles? Or just stick with same needle US9. I am using 100% wool classic bulky yarn by patons.

It is important that you get the correct gauge for the sweater to end up the right size. Go down at least one needle size until you get 4 stitches per inch.

Could this be knit using a mega bulky yarn (7)? I would have to unravel it from the first (pullover) sweater that I made back in September 2018. That sweater did not shape up properly because I committed the cardinal sin of knitting: I did not create a swatch! I have learned my lesson. I would like to redeem the yarn that I used. It is an acrylic yarn in (7) weight. Is it worth unraveling it for this cardigan/jacket? Or should I just buy new yarn in bulky (5) weight? If it isn't appropriate to this project, could you recommend a project for which I can use my sweater's yarn?

I don't recommend trying to change the yarn weight for this sweater from Bulky (what the pattern calls for) to "mega bulky" (I haven't even heard of that weight!). It is important, as you said, to knit a swatch and get the correct gauge to make sure your knit turns out the right size. Ah, yes. I said Mega Bulky because the brand name says Bernat Mega Bulky. Upon closer inspection of the label, it is considered (7) Jumbo yarn. Thank you for doing a search and sharing the results with me! I have 6 six-ounce (185 yds.) skeins of a 90% acrylic yarn in bulky (5) weight. I'll likely get more of that yarn to make this project. Sadly, I'm allergic to the lanolin in wool.

This may be silly but can you use the measurements and use say stockinette stitch with any yarn as long as it measures out to make a sweater?

happymedic515 - yes and no. You can use the measurements of this sweater to create a similar sweater in a different stitch, but a different stitch combo might not turn out to be a very good sweater. Stockinette stitch, for example, would make a much lighter-weight sweater that curled up - the collar wouldn't lay the same, and the lesser weight would mean that it probably wouldn't drape over the hips, etc.

Fatma - you can block things that are knit in the round the same way you'd block flat pieces. Follow the washing instructions on the yarn label for the best results.

I recommend steam blocking the sweater pieces before you seam, then wet blocking the entire sweater once it's finished. I explain all of this in the video!

+Bertha Smith - changing the yarn to a lighter weight will change the gauge (stitches per inch) resulting in a much smaller sweater. Even if you can get the correct tension with a lighter-weight yarn, it will be a much different sweater. I suggest sticking with the bulky weight suggested, or searching Ravelry to find a different pattern that uses the weight of yarn you're after.

10:26.. Splicing, felting or spit splicing, in new ball of yarn without using knots..This is easiest with wool or natural fiber.

Staci, you didn't mention sewing sides and back together. I know this needs to be done after sleeves are finished. Using mattress stitch without skipping any stitches?
