Reminds me of Yoshimatsu. Love the clusters in the brass!

Just came across this on my recommendations. Very good work, Thad! I saw on one of the comments that you’ve got a background in Jazz. Happy to hear some fresh chords used properly in Classical! Good composition skills too 👌🏼 You’ve got a like from me 👍🏼

I liked this very much! How you disposed the three pieces too, the third is the most luminous, the second the rythmic one and the first a prelude (that's how feel about them at least :). I liked the second the most, It gives me Zelda (newer ones) fighting theme vibes. Very very very nice

Thank you! I’m glad that the second piece came across the way it did - I definitely wanted to channel some fighting theme vibes!

Love this! Especially “Quarry”. Noticing the Yoshimatsu comments, have you listened to his “fuzzy bird sonata” for saxophone and piano? Really fun little pieces.

Thank you, Bethany! I’m only a little bit familiar with Yoshimatsu’s work, so I’ll definitely check those out. I’m always finding myself going back to Ravel for inspiration, so I’ll need to break out of that fixation eventually.

Great work! As a clarinetist, I have to ask: Is there any reason you chose Clarinets in Bb rather than in A, which would be the much more intuitive (and reasonable) choice for this key? 😅
@thadbaileymai
@thadbaileymai Год назад
Thank you for listening! Yeah, I don’t have a good reason other than not thinking it through lol. I’ll probably just switch it to A clarinet if it’s ever performed by real humans. Or at least write it out in Db instead of C# if I keep the instrumentation the same.

How do you start writing a piece? Do you just load up Musescore and start writing, or do you play stuff on instruments like piano etc. to get a good feeling of what to write?

it’s actually pretty minimal - I took a screen recording of the playback with QuickTime and combined it with separately exported audio. No video editing required other than some trimming!

Why the 7 #'s for the B Clarinet? Ive noticed you have a liking for difficult key signatures and i also like to do that sometimes, but this should at least be simplified to the enharmonic key with 5 b's instead in my opinion.
@thadbaileymai

As a brass player, I take pleasure in torturing woodwinds. In all seriousness though, there’s a lot of dumb little “easter eggs” throughout this unpolished score. I’d definitely be sure clean it up and make it more readable for actual humans if it gets an opportunity to be played!
@lanedunman4294
@lanedunman4294 Год назад
@@thadbaileymai Alternatively, you could score it for the clarinet in A. This would have the part in D rather than C#. Depends on what you prefer - there is a difference in tone color between the two instruments. BEAUTIFUL writing, by the way!

Hey Thad, if you haven't yet listened to the Respighi I recommended before, then you really should. Ironically, he also wrote a suite called The Birds, which I think you'll find interesting, considering your musical sound. You really do have a lot of his 'sound'. That's a huge comp, btw. Definitely listen to the Pines of Rome, and also the Fountains of Rome. I think he'll become your hero.
@thadbaileymai
@thadbaileymai Год назад
Thank you! Funny that you said that, I actually just started getting into Respighi’s orchestral works quite recently. I’ve been into his piano music for a while, but finally caught a live performance of Pines of Rome two nights ago from my city’s local symphony (VSO). Instantly became one of my favourite orchestral pieces. I’ll be sure to check out The Birds and Fountains of Rome soon!
