Three Step Process for Successful Brush Fire 

Probably the best beginning 30 seconds of any RU-vid video I have ever watched. Amazing. Thanks for flying “Old Glory”. I felt like I was at the movie theater with all the Dolby Surround Sounds system. Well done Mike.

On my burn pile sites I have an old piece of well casing which goes from the outside edge to the core of the pile. Then I have a 10' length of aluminum downspout that I put on the end of my leaf blower. Once it gets started I just let it run and it'll melt steel. I've had it so hot that it actually fused the ashes into a soft stone-like material. Wild. I have an old tarp which I toss over the pile before it rains, then pull it off and light it up. I don't use your fire starter to get it going, just a lot of little sticks placed over where the well casing emptied out under the pile, then I build the pile over that. Pour some diesel on top and let it trickle down through the pile to the sticks, then when it's ignited and has those coals, just like you, once it starts going, you can feed green wood into it and it'll burn like crazy. Before I developed that system it might take four hours to burn a big pile like yours. I can do one that size with green wood in an hour now. And best of all, it burns pretty clean, not a lot of smoke once it gets going. I love seeing what you're doing, great project, well executed!

If you have many brush piles of green wood I may have a helpful suggestion. When I was pipe lining we burned a lot of green wood. We had a piece of stainless tube, 3 eights, with a flattened end to create a spray effect, and an electric fuel pump pumping from a gas can, as well as a squirrel cage fan and a small gen set. We fed the fuel spray into the air flow of the fan, and lit it up. This provided us with a very hot flame thrower. Worked like a charm, green wood just disappears. .

I’d found that used motor oil does better than kerosene in fire burning at least for me. Love the videos

Hi Ho Mike, I have had great luck for years using a large propane torch to get large brush piles going like, I guess, roofers use-it’s about 2-2 1/2” in diameter. It’s great for making a few of your aforementioned hotspots! Thanks, always enjoy 👋

Awesome idea with the leaf blower! I’ve got 28 acres, and I have cleared sections with my Dad. He came up with a cool idea also. Use a Regular small size Tarp… and secure it with pieces of heavy limbs For a week or so… Over the outer brush pile if its huge like yours . It will dry out in the small area , and it will start very easily.🔥

On a different subject, I rented an excavator to start clearing my property and this was my first time ever using one. I must say that you make it look so darn easy. I know you have years of experience, but it’s still a skill set you don’t appreciate until you are behind the joysticks and foot pedals. Having said that… I LOVE IT! I SO want one now!

I have had good success picking a day after rains (important in CA) that has a light wind and basically making a small campfire at the upwind edge with paper, cardboard for a draft, dry kindling, and dry firewood from my household stash that I have doused with a bit of diesel before lighting. An old oil rag doesn't hurt. Once the fire gets going and I see some real coals (not from brush) I start adding the deadest wood that I have commandeered from the pile. It's a joy to behold. I also use the blower for oxygen augmentation once I have a small amount of real coals and I just won't blow them away from the center point of the flame.

Funny thing, when I see an American flag flying in slow motion like you did in the beginning, I expect Ronald Reagen to start talking about how great Our country is. I miss that guy.

Thanks. Ive used the same process you are using to burn brush. Its always tough to get the green stuff to go, so if I can wait a couple of weeks I do because it makes a huge difference in how fast it catches and burns.

I us dry firewood to establish the base, then constant propane feed and leaf blower off to side providing constant air until I have the center hot and burning. All the while feeding with tractor grapple.

Not a bad fire for wet mostly green wood, well done! I use a similar method, but with propane weed burning torch and leaf blower, never fails.

I just had a brush fire up here in NH at my camp. I use these 3 things Used motor oil and a propane torch. I also have my makita leaf blower but most of the time I dont need it. I ALSO always toss a bunch of Pine chunks that is camp fire wood that I have all over the place from taking big pines down. Toss a bunch of those in there dump some used oil on there torch and Boom shes roaring in a flash

I use my backpack blower sometimes when burning piles of brush. I just start it up and set it down and point it towards the fire and let it idle. Works good to get the fire started. 👍

We used to burn brush piles like you until I was at our local gun shop & ran across a "Flame thrower"... Make's burning even more fun Lol... Hold's 1/3 gallon... Uses 100% gasoline or up to 50/50 gasoline diesel mix.... Works great... It's a Pluse fire brand flame thrower.

The blower works great that's what I use once I get the fire started with a little diesel fuel!. I love your idea of using a sprayer for the diesel!. Morgans good day!.

I recently bought a leaf blower with a trigger that can be set to varying rpms for just this purpose. That way I can continue to feed the fire as the blower keeps the furnace going in the pile. Loved the shots of the chickens! Reno

I always use a plastic tarp to cover my brush piles. When the rain stops, light her up! Everything else is soaked so it’s safe to burn. The only good thing about getting older, we gain some smarts along the way.Enjoy your videos.

You are on the right track Mike, getting a "Hot Spot" will help dry the center out you should be able to get a good roaring burn pile tomorrow I use 20 lb propane tank attached to a brush torch Diesel fuel cost more than propane here. and both a gas blower and a 80 volt battery blower doesn't take long but hey after it burns down you can cook hotdogs for supper. Great opening flag,dog and chickens also like to see brush burning, I think fire is the best way to get rid of brush. I used to never make brush piles just start a small fire and feed the brush to it would burn it as fast as I could feed it green or dry made no difference. When I got my wood cut all I had was pile of ashes usually only about 6x6 area. Have a day

Mike, Just to let you know, I am still taking notes. I am titling this one the brush furnace (blaster). First very right conditions, second one pump sprayer filled with off road diesel, third a blower, and finally the man to make this is to a super furnace. Mike, you are the man, sort of a lava man. Good Afternoon Morgan Family- Great video 👍. I liked the start with the flag. I use a mixture 1 part diesel fuel and 1 part gasoline in the winter. I use the leaf blower method also. The meeting location is great- I love Cracker Barrel.

What you burn up in your brush piles I could hear my house for a year. Lot of nice round logs. I cut my trees down to 2 inches some I burn in kitchen stove. And the pot belly in the living room. There a lot I see in your pictures laying from blow down 🌬️ I would cut to use. Good luck. Happy trails from New Hampshire

Good afternoon! When we cleared the area around the western Ozarks farmhouse, I had some green brushpiles and tried to burn with diesel. The MF Rose in particular just didn’t want to catch. So I mixed up a 50-50 mix of diesel and old engine oil. The oil stuck to the wood and MF Rose canes better and made it burn a little slower. And I had a propane torch too. But didn’t have our blower on site. 🤨

Mike, great video, somehow I just knew you would use the fire starter, thank goodness you didn't use gas!! Wet green brush is pretty hard to get going but ya done good ole boy. Just for that I'm giving you one atta-boy. Have a day!! Jay from Pa.

Mike you should tarp the pile tell you are ready to burn,keep dry stuff separate untill you are ready too burn ❤️‍🔥,set dry on top then start your process of burning 🥵 technically with fuel air mixture better success and more burning of pile. It works well this way I do it all the time here in eldorado county town of eldorado. Good luck mike.

Our volunteer fire dept. uses a leaf blower to keep coals ready to keep the chickens cooking.

Wood scraps from the shop and a weed burner torch does the trick for me.

Always good to have a plan. A planning meeting is essential. Breakfast thrown in makes it fun too.

Several others mentioned using a tarp. Even a 10 ft piece of 6mil PE plastic over a portion of a bigger pile makes pile burning in the rain easy.

I used to use diesel fuel for starting fires...but this is all I need...a Flame King 500,000 BTU Propane Torch.

I usually bring out a few pieces of dry firewood and get a “camp fire” going under the brush pile. It then catches the brush.

I use something similar. I use a propane torch wand and a leaf blower. But for years I used cardboard a lighter and a leaf blower.

A weed burner torch hooked to a propane tank and a battery blower will get that going quickly and very safely. That is the most efficient method I have found to burn large brush piles like that.

Love the American and whole intro for that matter!

I really enjoyed today's video clip, Mike !! Reminds me of my African days, where I was born. My parents ran a motel on the edge of a Game Reserve where they would have the occasional bush 🔥 fires, primarily started by lightning 🌩️ strikes !!

I was surprised you got as much to burn as you did. I have a tendency to smash the pile as I add to it, this keeps it more compact and it burns much better, not as much air gaps inbetween branches it all of it burns much better. Looks like you have your system that works with fuel and power.

I like to use a propane weed burner, and the backpack blower. I use a 10'. section of metal downspout on the end of the leaf blower so you can get the turbocharged air right into the hot spot, without the blower being too close to the heat. And definately know which way the wind is blowing, it can be a big help also.

Just have Norfolk Southern drive by yir property. They are really good at "controlled burns".

I found that when I stacked piles by hand they had too much “air space”. Now that I have a tractor with a grapple, I give the brush a good squeeze before it goes on the pile. Burns like a champ! Also use diesel and a propane torch to get that hotspot!

I'd go to 3 meetings a day if my boss looked like Melissa. That's good that yall do that. Guarantees time for both of you.

I use Tiki Lamp oil to start my Burn Barrel , I can soak down green wood and it lights up real quick

Hey Mike there is a company out by you in Johnstown PA that ports chainsaws. Ripsaw chainsaws. I had them port all of my chainsaws including my Stihl MS 500i. Huge difference. Great company. Might want to check them out. Happy cutting.

I do the same as you are doing here, except I start with one of the big propane weed burner torches... if it needs a little help, then bring out the diesel fuel, and I use my Stihl BG55 leaf blower. I'll start it up and just let it idle, and set it down and blow into the hotspot. Works like a charm. If you really want to get it going, lock the throttle wide open!

Oh Yeah! Cracker Barrel. One of my favorite places!

I’ve used a leaf blower for years to help burn wet leaves mostly. Just last week I had to burn some wet muddy leaves that had washed down from the neighbors and clogged my ditch. Got a good bed of hot coals with some dry wood then started piling on the leaves leaving 1 side open. Then the leaf blower to force air into the pile. Finally covered the entire pile with more leaves and let it smolder all nite. Next morning ..... gone...

I have always been successful using a straw bale sprayed with diesel for those really stubborn piles.

The best trick we use is exactly what you did but tuck a bale of straw up under there before you start your fire. It will hold the heat. It makes a huge difference.

I use a propane tiger torch, gets the job done

Hey Mike, are you planning on raking the clearing after all of the stumps are ground down flush to the surface? Another good thing about the skid steer is you can stir up the wood in the wood bunker every now and then. It will bring the wood on the bottom up to the top and vice verse, to help create a more evening drying out of the firewood in the bunker. I don't think you had the skid steer last year when the bunker became full, right? Thanks for the video.

I live in a county that has burn restrictions from May to October, so I collect downed trees and other detritus and burn them this time of year under an open power line. I use a drip torch with 2/3 diesel and 1/3 gasoline which works pretty well getting things started, but I never thought of the blower as additional persuasion. Great idea!

I have not gotten but a few seconds into this video as I became “too emotional”. For many reasons the flag opening struck me hard Mike. Partly due to three plus decades as a soldier and my current emotional state of mind. As one of the first of the boomers I had the opportunity to live during the best of times. An old tire with a little diesel is very effective in getting green wood burning, regardless of diameter. A little smokey for sure.

Use few pieces split wood and fire starter like you do in stove to get brushfire started.

I use a leaf blower too, does a great job.

leaf blower all so works good for putting out fires just blow the flames back in to burnt grass or leaves. I would dig the stumps don't care much for the grinders just hides the problem.

Thank Michael! I was wondering how you did it, I have to get a pile burned up by March 15th. Good old New York State doesn’t allow open fires between March 15 and May 15, no matter size or weather!

The leaf blower does the trick every time.

I remember a gal that was burning leaves in the street and why she decided to pour gasoline in a cup into the fire. She just about burnt all of her hair and eyelashes. Ended up in a burn center. My neighbor growing up would put gasoline on his grill and start the fire, oh yeah it caught but with all us kids playing there he took a chance!

Yo Mike, I have been using my used motor oil to start my brush piles. Save the expensive diesel fuel for your equipment. You must have a lot of used oil from all your stuff you run daily and as of yet I don't think they pay anyone to recycle it!

It’s all about hot coals, if you can push the sides on top of those hot coals with a little time and effort you can get rid of the whole pile.

I used gasoline for a fire for awhile , but I was careful with it, I found out and switched to diesel fuel which works better.

Nice trick getting the fire going with the leaf blower. I use the diesel fuel and dry straw but I can see when it down to getting the stumps hot and fired up the blower may help.
