Business Insider spoke with Joe McKenzie, CEO & co-founder of luxury retailer Xupes, about how to reveal if a Rolex watch is fake or not. We had bought a fake online for £50 and asked McKenzie to compare our Rolex to an authentic piece.
McKenzie says that looking for serial numbers on the case, checking for the brand logos on the buckle of the watch, and looking if the watch hand is "sweeping" and not "ticking," as that is the easiest and most obvious give away too if it is a genuine piece.
NOTE: Not all Rolexes have a sweeping movement. Joe was talking about the watch in question when mentioning the movement, and not all Rolexes in general, as some of the older movements do have a quartz (ticking) movement.

He’s actually wrong on the tick, not all Rolex’s have automatic movements, the Oysterquartz does in fact have quartz movement.

Rolex done a automatic quartz movement. Their quartz movement never had batteries it was the movement of your wrist like the other movement. And when you take the watch apart you can see a bad miyota movement with a plastic holder.

This video actually does more harm than good because the fake is so laughably bad a blind man could spot it. Good fakes don't tick, they use decent automatic movements. They will also have most if not all of the correct markings and feel pretty decent in hand. Don't thin that this "knowledge" will help you from getting burnt by a good fake sold as the real deal. Always buy from a reputable seller.

This is definately not a $50 clone. Even $50 clones on dhgate had mechanical movement. Probably $10 clone. For this clone is easy to spot like a meter away, date magnifier, SEL, dial, ticks, bezel... maybe get a higher end replica from JF or NOOB and compare it.

1:10 not every Rolex is an automatic. There are about 25000 Rolex oyster quartz models ever made. They are not in production now.

I had a watch once when I was in the military, Timex I think, maybe Casio, you set the time/timer or alarm or stopwatch by rotating the face. Man that was the simplest watch to adjust I've ever had. The watch you want when you need to get a couple minutes sleep here and there and stood watch whenever or whatever. It had indiglo and all that. I just can't remember the name of it. Was maybe 40 bucks back in the early 2000's. Anybody here that can point me in the right direction?

The easiest way to check if it was fake? The cost. I was recently in Bangkok and brought two "Rolex" watches. One for $51 and one for $26 both feel heavy, both sweep and both have Rolex bands. But at $76 for two watches, I'm pretty sure they aren't genuine ;-) Oh and both work well and FYI, Fake Rolex watches come in 5 grades. LOL So the Jeweller told me. I'd never pay upwards of $5,000 for a rolex. That is ridiculous and obscene.

It is not that easy. There are fakes that are quite a bit harder to distinguish. These criteria don't apply there. Also some genuine vintage Rolexes would pass as fake, using these criterias. Also Rolex used used quartz movements. The Rolex Oysterquartz is an example.

A real Gold or platinum Rolex is like a ring but can tell the time basically. If it is golds it isn't that overpriced because it is a lot of fine metals and they are very hard to make/

In what sense? Rolex watches are incredibly stable when it comes to their price, you will never lose a lot of money if you need to resell it and if you're lucky, depending on how the market develops, you may actually come out ahead.

Get a good quality fake and then tell the difference. I have a 15+ years old watch and the only reason I know it's fake is that it's golden colour has faded. Literally everything else is as good as originally and it's still working after all this time so I honestly don't care about it being fake (whoever bought it probably knew it was fake)

That's just like why buy samsung s9 when you can buy s8, why buy lambo when you can buy civic. Great engineering and design goes into these watches. These watches aren’t just to tell time. They are a piece of art. The inside of these Rolex’s are super complicated and these mechanical watches are super durable. Rolex watches are know for being one of the most durable mechanical timepieces made. Don't just assume it tells time. Why would you buy a more expensive shoe than your old one? Because it is more durable than your other shoes. And who the hell would sell an expensive watch if it's shitty? Then no one would buy it.

The weight is always the biggest indicator. Real rolexes will be much denser than the fakes because they have real precious metals in them, which are denser than what the fakes have.

This video is a joke right? That’s the worst fake I’ve ever seen. Any good fake will have all the features of the genuine, including an automatic Swiss movement and serial numbers. $50 for that watch was a total rip off, I wouldn’t pay $5 for it.

well, in lamborghini tesla problem i say lamborghini has more than just value to buy i bet it is actually nice to ride and very fast but yes, why buy a lamborghini if you can buy tesla? in your context there's no reason to buy lamborghini IF tesla is as comfortable and fast but cheaper than lamborghini. look, a normal watch cost alot less than a rolex, how much use do you get from rolex that you can't get from a normal watch? close to 0. this is why i hate "luxury" item. they sell brand, and yes their quality is good but their quality is never good enough to justify the price

Rolex made quartz 'ticking' watches so the sweep isnt the best way to spot a fake. Get to know the models. The fake pictured is ripping off a submariner which rolex never made quartz movements for. Then you can use whether its sweeping or ticking as an indication of whether its real. If you also get to know models you would know there is no blue/red bezeled submariner.

I don't know about you but £20,000 on a watch is overkill. There are much cheaper and real watches today. Casio, Seiko, kinyeul. It's still got all the features of a Rolex and equals in quality. I will rather put the Rolex money into a business.

Man this guy dosent know Rolex, Rolex did have Oyester Quartz models in the last 80s, but its a specific models. The Sub or GMT models were not made with Quartz movements ever. Theres a number of other tell tale signs.

They have made them really similar so it’s hard to tell them apart by looking..... the easiest way is to feel them. Fake ones will be really light and they use cheap metal and you can just tell the overall quality difference by feeling it.

The reason why Rolex watches are expensive is due to a patent on technology they owned. The patent was the sweeping movement of the watch. That patent ran out a few years ago and I don't know if they tried renewing it.
