Threes spent a bunch of time polishing their game, and then 2048 came along. I guess in 2048 you don’t really have to think at all, and it’s quite short. Or maybe people just like powers of 2 more than three times powers of 2
Some of the 2048 games last hrs ( without undo) and there is actually complex strategy to 2048 with good plays being able to get 32k 80% of the time without undo
I actually learned about Threes through 2048, and then played Threes a lot more over the years. The music just makes it so much better. Also, Threes got updates after 2048 went viral, so it's not like Threes died. 2048 might even have brought a wave of new players to it, who had learned about it through 2048 like me.
