Hello All, I had so much fun altering this boiler suit. In this video you will learn how to take in the waist and raise the waist, add a button closure and fix the pockets.

@@LydiaNaomi That's also the reason why they are often so large, they are meant to be thrown on over your regular clothes so they don't get dirty. Also, the loop you often see on the leg of overalls and coveralls is typically for a hammer or paint brush and If it has a long skinny pocket on the arm that pocket is usually for a flashlight in case you are crawling in a tight space and you can't reach your lower pockets.

The same is true for lab coats and a lot of hospital overwear! If you want to have holes to access your pant pockets but don't want the chance of getting things through the opening, there are also designs that use overlapping pieces of fabric (almost like a wrap)

Thank you for filming the close ups and explaining everything so clearly 😀 I’ve had a pair of vintage coveralls in my closet for so long and didn’t know how to approach taking them in. what a great video! I had purchased a pair of mens xs coveralls but they were way too big and felt uncomfortable with the crotch down around my knees! I followed your instructions, pulled up the waist 4 inches and had to take 7 inches out of the waistband. It worked! They feel great and now I have confidence to attempt more alterations in the future. Thank you!!!!!! (I'll be trying your shacket too!)

I found one similar at a flea market in military camouflage fabric. I wasn't sure about the velcro openings on the side either. I would really like to use it as a pattern to create others for myself. The waist is also too low on me. Would you create a video using this "boiler suit" as a pattern? I'm obsessed with jumpsuits! 💖💖💖🙋🏾🙋🏾🙋🏾

Yes!!! A pattern would be amazing…of course I’d still have to find someone that could sew the alterations.🤣 I’m 5ft with a short waist and short legs. I’ve always wanted to learn to sew like my grandmother who made a lot of my clothes as a kid…simply because clothes never fit me right. Once again I loved your tutorial, and your confidence in following your vision towards the amazing end result. I became a subscriber immediately.🥳

This turned out fantastic! I recently found a similar vintage boiler suit at a thrift store (my jaw dropped to the floor too lol) and I also have fit issues - low waist, a tad baggy, long pant legs, etc. I was nervous to start slicing away for fear of ruining the entire piece (I'm newer to sewing), but this video was so helpful! I'll definitely be following your technique after a bit of practice on other projects.

I’ve been scouring videos for hours trying to figure out how to tailor a pair of my dad’s vintage Navy flight school coveralls to fit me without looking like I’m wearing a pillowcase, and your video surpassed everything else I’ve watched. Now if I only knew how to sew.😂 Do you do alterations for individuals for pay? If so let me know. I’m stoked I found your channel, you have an amazing eye for detail.👏

kind of a newbie here .. so I'm curious as to why you did the gather / cinch on the top rather than taking in the side seam or adding some darts? also, does this jumpsuit have a drawstring in the waistband? considering doing the same to a men's jumpsuit, but I don't want to sew through the drawstring if I take in the side seams.
@LydiaNaomi
@LydiaNaomi 2 года назад
Great questions! I thought about taking in and darts but I think I was being slightly lazy. Gathers are the easiest and surefitting. Darts can be difficult to create smoothly and taking it in also poses potential problems for my highly picky and detailed brain so I opted for the most straight forward method of gathering. I love how it looks tho! This is one of my most worn wardrobe items! There was no drawstring. If you want to take in the sides you’ll want to take in the outer garment and inner drawstring casing backing separately then sew back together. Or if you want to be simple just cinch the drawstring in the back first to how you want it and take in the sides securing the drawstring there. leave the front a little bigger to utilize the drawstring in only the front. Or replace the drawstring area in the back with elastic. Hope that makes sense!

Exactly the video i was looking for! I bought a vintage klm workers boiler suit which is wayyy too big, so I’m gonna try this! Mine does have elastic in the back instead of a waistband that’s all the way around... do you have a tip for that?
@LydiaNaomi
@LydiaNaomi 4 года назад
Oooh how fun! Glad you found my video ☺️. Hmm for elastic, if its encased you could open up on one side and tighten it. If your trying to bring up the waist you could try creating a new seam close to the elastic without touching it then just topstitch. Oor you could take it all apart and reconfigure it then sew it all back up with the elastic or without the elastic. You could also go in and add darts over the elastic, it just may be a bit lumpy. There are so many creative ways I’m sure you can come up with! Hope any of that helps 😅 and I hope others can comment and help out too :)

I bought a jumpsuit but it’s torso is too big for me. On the waist it has elastic at back and a belt over it. It is snap closure at front. Could you help me how to make torso short of this jumpsuit? Most important I am beginner in sewing.
@LydiaNaomi
@LydiaNaomi 3 года назад
I would keep the entire waist in tact and just create a 1/2" seam allowance above it. Then shorten the top area, add 1/2" seam allowance to it and sew the top to the bottom. Your seam will be directly above the waistband and basically be invisible. It shouldn't be too hard :) Just make sure you keep those seams out of the way of the snaps.
