Another little thrift store amp - I can never seem to pass up a $20 amplifier. This Fender Frontman PR241 is a 15W amp, made in Mexico in the 1990s. This one was obviously filthy and needed a ton of cleanup. While inspecting it, I found that it also needed a new input jack, and I decided to remove the fixed baffle and create a new baffle covered with new grill cloth. After everything is cleaned and assembled, I give the amp a brief test.

Fender Mexico always sounds like Fender Mexico - I Love it. Nice work man. This pushes the value of this nice bedroom amp up widely.

That was an incredible amount of effort for an amplifier that will be hard to get paid for all of your efforts I hope whoever buys it knows what went into the restoration process it’s built better than Fender built it!

Just in time before I change out the broken effects return jack on my solid state fender stage 185 amp. Not looking forward to opening it up but it has to be done

Great Video 👍 Thanks Would you be able to show a video of how to replace the channel selector switch with a 1/4" input jack for a footswitch? It would really be appreciated if it's possible. Thank You

I’ll sure think about it if I get another one. This one already belongs to a new owner.

Nice restoration. The achilles heel on these solid state practice amps are the speakers, one of the best mods you can do is fit a "speaker out" socket, and turn them into a head unit, they sound a whole lot better when you put the signal through a cabinet. I've run these things through a 2X12, 4X8 and a 4X12, and the improvement was impressive, and as a bonus the mod is very cheap and easy to do.

This amp actually has an 8-Ohm output jack right on the front.

@@hacksguitarhobby That's a nice addition most practice amp makers seem to miss 👍

Great video! Would that input jack fix also work on a Fender Roc Pro head?
@hacksguitarhobby
@hacksguitarhobby 6 месяцев назад
More than likely yes. Most input jacks are essentially just two connections. The Switchcraft 11 jacks were used in Fenders for decades before everything went to PCB.

i modded mine by clipping a couple caps ie c12 and put a jensen mod speaker. sounds good. want to add jack to use my fender mustang pedal to switch distortion in the pr241. the stock button has too many wires to only switch on/off with foot pedal. maybe some day i will investigate how to do it.
@hacksguitarhobby
@hacksguitarhobby 9 месяцев назад
Yeah, sounds possible. Maybe that switch is DPST or something, but I suspect it’s not and there may be multiple grounds like there are on the input jack.

What do the clipping of the caps do to the overall sound?

no está mal pero no queda tan lindo que se vean los 4 tornillos...no se para que se los puso igual si la madera está agarrada con pegamento...

To hold the metal grate in place.

I tried that one in my fender frontman 15g replacing the input jack. But my amp slowly dieing after 10 seconds. What seems to be the problem?
@hacksguitarhobby

Sounds like something in the power supply section, but it’s beyond me.

How to figure out the hot and ground on the board?
@hacksguitarhobby
@hacksguitarhobby 7 месяцев назад
I typically test for continuity between each contact and a known ground using an Ohmmeter.

Pretty good but Really? All that work for what, a $50 amp? And the main reason I clicked on the video was to see how to remove all the electronic which you just FF though with no explanation. :( No matter it was the wrong amp anyway as I have a Frontman 15R. Why do you waste so much time on an amp that will give you such a small ROI??? And Dang, I thought I was obsessive compulsive but you take it to a whole new level.
