Girl! Preach!! You truly hit the nail on the head…these thrift stores were given these items for free! It definitely feels the like the original intention for thrift stores is being lost. We have a church thrift store in our area, that VERY obviously knows exactly what they have and they price accordingly. On rare occasions I have purchased some pricier items there…but most of the time I just walk out. I love the shelf and the trivet (I could use more of those!), all the old books AND the hymnal. ❤ Great haul!! Oh my goodness! Thank you for the shoutout!! ❤❤ I can’t wait to see how you incorporate the book pages into your decor!!

Yes! It’s not like the price of inventory has gone up or anything, it’s always been donations for them 🤷🏻‍♀️. I am the same, if I really want something and I know I probably won’t find it again I will sometimes pay, but most often I leave and don’t go back for a while. Thank you! I love your style so much so even though my channel is small I thought some of my subscribers would love your style to! Thanks for watching 🥰

I think in part prices are higher too because a lot of people have made a job of buying stuff they can resell for a profit. Thrift stores got wind of that and decided if anyone is going to make money it needs to be them. I find the smaller, independent thrift stores that benefit shelters or similar charities tend to be more fairly priced. Goodwill, on the other hand, has gotten RIDICULOUS.
@dearmikaila
@dearmikaila 2 месяца назад
I agree! I find that the smaller independent ones price more fairly to, they have a goal to help people and I think they like to reflect that in their pricing. Goodwill is one of the stores that gets me all fired up! Have you ever researched where the money they make even goes? It’s not very clear who they actually help with all the money…they also have a site where they put very expensive items for sale online, I am not a fan of that. I go into them every now and then and usually don’t find anything affordable
@plantlady1227
@plantlady1227 2 месяца назад
@@dearmikaila I haven't gone down the rabbit hole on where Goodwill spends their proceeds - but have heard from more than one source that the money goes primarily to high salaries for the muckety mucks at the top. I'm with you - I don't feel that this is an ethical thing when they are supposedly a charity for those in need. I need to find some more thrift stores in the surrounding area to check out - we only have 2 small shops in town with very limited hours. At least the prices are good at ours, but being a small town the selection is limited.😄

I have all the same misgivings about thrift stores today...especially when I see well to do people buying things to resell online before someone more needy has a chance to buy it. Not right. But I continue to thrift because the prices are still much better than full retail. Loved your idea to make a match holder with the little early American jar! And the last basket would be perfect for your kitty, with the low sides : )

I never really go to thrift stores anymore. Yard sales are so much better. Last summer I got two nice summer dresses at a yard sale for .25 each and I constantly get compliments on them. I’ve furnished my house with mostly yard sale items and hand me downs. Last summer I also got a big area rug for my living room for only $7. My shark steam mop and swiffer were both in a yard sale free box. I love the idea of helping actual families with my yard sale purchases versus supporting a store. You got some nice finds though! I also love old fashioned Victorian cottagy things. That life of Richard Wagner book is beautiful 😍
@dearmikaila

I still go but I am very particular about what price I am willing to pay, I am not going to give them the expensive and I also will not donate to the ones that raise the prices. I feel the same about yard sales! We are actually out shopping them now and there is so many great deals! That’s some really great finds you found! A rug for $7 is so good 😮. I love how it supports families to and it feels more like we’re sharing all the goods around our area 🥰. Thank you! I love that book as well!

Your analysis is 100% correct. Sometimes, new hires want to show off by pricing things high. There is a lot of ignorance out there. I have been thrifting for 40 years. I never shop at Target or Walmart, and lately, I find myself thrifting only on sale days, and if I think the price is unreasonable, I just don't get it. 99% of my home has been thrifted, and yes, now everything is more expensive because the economy is on its knees. Rents are higher and electricity is higher for the stores too. However, it is still better to shop second hand and use your money for food.

Mikaila, great haul! I agree, their prices are ridiculous! They really aren’t thrift stores anymore but just another store. I agree with all you said.. thrift stores are getting out of hand with some of their pricing! And what gets me is the stuff I'd donated😳 We owned a thrift store for almost 5yrs back in TN. We never shopped for our store.. everything was donated. We never over priced! I used to tell my husband if he kept basically giving things away we were just going to have to car the name to the FREE store😄 Of course i was kidding, just giving him a hard time! We did lose alot as far as weary could have been made, but again, it was all donations. And we actually did have the store supporting a good cause.. we also had a men's recovery home & ear was made in the store helped support those men, we were non-profit, we had to raise every dime except what we got from monthly sponsors. These stores that are jacking prices way up.. they're supposed to be for a good cause.. but who knows 🤷‍♀️ I can only speak for the one we owned. We also actually helped others in need.. the elderly, those who had lost their homes or those that were homeless or just needed help.. So we did give things to this who needed it! We were blessed, we blessed others as well😊 We would look things up sometimes just to see hot old an item was & ck comp prices.. but we didn't price against the comp. We made sure we stayed well below it. We also could find out more about an item by searching it so we were more educated about it for the customer, if the asked questions we wanted to have an answer for them. I have a set of bronzed baby shoes! Found them in a box with a little bronzed t-model car.. i'll always wonder if the car belonged to the child that wore those shoes 🤷‍♀️ I love the doilies, i always pick them up if i find them at a good price. Sometimes if they look too new, i just tea stain them so they go better with my decor. The Lords Prayer piece is really nice! I really love the shelf, love the detail on bottom, of course you can always paint it. I love having little drives all around my home. The regency/Victorian era is one of my fav's, especially the art. I've also star collecting some of the figurines! Pretty sure the metal pieces were the base of something, not we sure what.. Google Lens & see if you can get anything in them 🤷‍♀️ The white/gold piece is a little single shelf, i call them sconce style shelves😄 I have quite a few. I use them under art, in gallery walls or a single piece, just to sit a little item on that might go well with the picture.. great piece! Love collecting old bibles & old hymnals! I watch her channel..I love how she did that with her antique mantle! I've framed a few songs.."Amazing GraceX was the first one i framed! I got one book i take pages from that's not too old. The coffee cup could go along with the regency era! Ive framed several pictures from books😊 There are McCoy collectable, Google that piece! Keep looking for you oil lamp! You'll find it! You'll probably find it cheaper at A thrift store.. buy i have seen them in antique stores for around $12! Yard sales are another place you can usually find one at a good price! If you can find one been $10-$15, for a large one, that's a great price. You can find the smaller one's cheaper but I'm sure your looking for the large one! I would have been ok if you said my name, nobody knows me🥴, but thank you for being so thoughtful😊 You had a really great haul! Enjoyed chatting.. as always😄 Have A blessed rest of your week my friend!🙏🏻

They most definitely are! I have donated so many nice things as well and thought "someone will be so excited to get this at a great price", and then I go into the thrift stores and they price gouge stuff! How awesome what your thrift store did! We need more people like you running the stores instead of the current ones lol. I love the Lord's Prayer piece and the doilies to! I was so excited to find them. Tea staining is a good idea, I have never done it but might have to try it one day. Google lensing the metal pieces is a good idea! Thank you for reminding me. I love the idea of framing hymns! I am definitely going to keep looking for the oil lamp, I know I will find one eventually :). Next time I will share your name if I have something specific to say, I just don't want to jeopardize anyones privacy, I know I value mine! Thank you much for watching and commenting as usual! God bless and I hope you have an amazing rest of your week my sweet friend!! :)

@@dearmikaila I bought a small cross stitch hoop I'm going to stain & take either 1 hymn or cut up several & make a little collage, I'm going to tea stain the hymn page or pages then glue them to the back of the hoop. Not exactly sure how I'm going to decorate the the hoop yet. I thought about gluing the larger jute rope or some kind of cotton type lace around the front of hoop then use the smaller size to make a piece to hang it with. Idk, i just want it to look rustic! i just got to think about it. Maybe after I get the hymn framed I'll figure something out!🤷‍♀️ When we packed to move i purged my closet, i had a pretty big one to mystery & it was full. I had 5 lawn & garden trash bags full of clothes, shoes, scarves, jackets, pocketbooks.. You name it! I sent it all to a women's recovery home! I wasn't about to donate it for GW to mark up & a bunch of money when i knew there were ladies trying to get their lives together & most if not all were in need! I hope those young ladies were blessed & that every piece went to good use

I completely agree with your comments and analysis regarding the prices in thrift stores. People are donating unwanted items in order to help the less fortunate. This may be an unpopular opinion. However, the whole resale thing is in part responsible for this increasing price phenomenon. I don't think that it's Goodwills business what people do with purchased items, but they have made it their concern. They have recognized that there is a greater profit out there. So, I do fundamentally believe that these resalers are responsible for the ultimate destruction of "thrifting ".
@dearmikaila
@dearmikaila 2 месяца назад
Yes! I do believe the re-selling is partly responsible. I also believe that thrift stores we're created to help people on a budget and people who want to buy less new things to stop the overconsumption of stuff. Thrift stores we're not started to "take down all the re-sellers", they cannot ignore the good just to take down the re-sellers. I agree that it is not Goodwills business what people do with their items!!
@bandkh90

I agree with a lot of your comments but please consider that these stores have overheads like rent, electricity, public liability insurance etc. If they don’t have a staff of entirely volunteers, they may also have wages and overheads there. Flea Markets and Garage sales may not be incurring (in most instances) these same overheads. So when rents are out of control and interest rates are leading us all to the brink, these stores suffer too! I do agree that they should be more competitively priced but don’t forget the overheads they incur. I believe that’s what’s driving the prices up. If I can actually find what I’m looking for at a thrift store, I’m more than happy to shop there but quality stuff at thrift stores are getting rarer!
@dearmikaila
@dearmikaila 2 месяца назад
Yes, I actually considered those things before I posted the video. The thrift stores in my area used to be affordably priced and although I know that prices have went up on certain things..it is not enough of an increase in costs to line up with the new price increases. Also, thrift stores in the exact same town with a larger building which should cost more in utilities and such charges a lower price than the very small thrift store. I dont know everything about their expenses but I do believe they are up charging just to try and keep people from re-selling, and that’s not okay in my opinion. I will still continue to thrift because as you seen, I still find things thrifting, I just hope it doesn’t come to where thrifting becomes the cost of flea markets and such, which is when I will no longer go. I have also done a bit of a deep dive into where a lot of Goodwills money goes, the CEO and such gets laid A LOT of money, much more than is needed to be considered a living wage. There will always be good and bad thrift stores and I just to choose to support the ones that try to keep helping people the most. Like I said, I’m still going to thrift, I am just going to refuse to pay the high prices. Thank you for your comment and for pointing out some things for us all to think about! God bless 🥰

I posted before I realized that you are a woman of faith. The way God works for me is that I learn over time the many ways he shows his love. As I was writing just now I understood the people who make money reselling are ok. They should have a right in a free economy because the ones that resell call upon a knowledge they have. Yes they are competition for poor people like me but God blesses all those who follow his will and get to know him. I have been poor a long time but everyone can change their lives and be as blessed as I have been. Yes it is harder to thrift now but when I thought I lost everything he has shown me I didnt know what I was talking about. Its the old cliche when one door closes another one opens and though are so many many doors.

Thrift stores came about to support the " working poor " the mission was to improve the working poor people's " quality of life" thrift stores began with church members of several different denominations coming together with a common mission. Perhaps, as Christians, we should reorganize, come together, and once more redefine " thrift stores " and go back to DONATED ITEMS being priced for those in need, not those " wanna be on eBay " people hiding behind and receiving tax breaks intended for true thrift stores! I have been thrifting since my twenties and I am 71. And. am glad someone noticed the high prices. A long time ago it wasnt even called thrifting. You could find amazing things. Then thrift stores hired experts. I live in ALASKA and before he went out of business the guy that owned the Antique store in Fairbanks used to thrift along side me For his store. Now I cant really walk and I see that I was getting alot of exercise doing what I loved. I am an artist and used to paint images on wardrobes. It is so exciting to watch the creative explosion of utube. I watch many dyi peeps. But the dark side is not really the high prices but the competition. There are utubers I watch but I am bothered by the ones who dont Use their creativity to make things but instead resell items to rich women. They market them up by 70%. Even those people though are using their eye and knowledge to make money. And I believe in a free market system. Its really all good.
