My Grandpa had an auction house when I was growing up (we lived in the back warehouse for some time), and I just LOVE auctions. His real name was Richard...his auction name was "High Dollar Dick". 😮😂
The bathroom is the least expensive place? ! OMG that cracked me up! And I had to smile when you said "at least I made her pay." That is my optional goal at auctions. If I can't have it, someone else is gonna pay big time for it!
Lol! Thank you for appreciating my terrible black humor. I didn't specifically bid her up for vengeance, but if I want it I'm not stopping until we hit my max
You haven't read any of my books, George. Or you would know that I was born with a whole lot of snark and irreverence. Both of which I passed on to my son! My satires are off the wall snarky and irreverent - no holds barred - and even my horror books and stories contain a decent dram of sarcasm. @@TheAntiqueNomad
Your commentary is always fantastic...I needed some dry and very slightly only little bit dark humor ...and the problem with posthumous collectables comment went with the well the Elvis decanter fell and blew..It was a little like the WKRP in Cincinnati dead pan jokes about the silly main news man...thanks again for auction education..only have been to a few about 30 years ago and yes..bought the fake Limoges box...still use however.
I love the Tigger Santa. Big Tigger fan because he's so silly. 😄 The 70's wicker chair sold for over $100.. Or none of them did. You did well George. 👍
I want one of those gothic chairs to use at the head of the table. Since I am now officially the matriarch of the family, I think I deserve a throne chair.
Hi George - have we met somewhere? Have I knocked you down trying to beat you to some valuable object at a flea market or shop? If so, I apologize. All is fair in love and thrifting. @@georgemoore-wg5jj
My husband had a 67 mustang he made it into a hot rod😅..now I have a 03” gt convertible with only 60,000 miles on it🎉…thanks for taking us along like we are right there!!..everything has such history that’s what it’s all about❤
Good evening, George! Love the styling of "Sweet Treats and Eats"! I liked that block pulley. For some reason, I'm drawn to those things 😅 That Mosser "Beaded Shell" pitcher was really pretty. It is from a Dugan mold. The old wood fishing lures fascinate me. I'd like a collection fixed to a wall hanging display. I actually like the ones that are a bit worn best. That Gothic Victorian chair had a nice look. It would make a nice bedroom chair. I would've been all over that kitchen clock, even with nowhere to put it, for $7.00! I'm not believing how low the furniture was going there. That would be a FANTASTIC way to furnish a house! $5.00 for the Victorian chair...😑 OMG! I would've had to rent a U-Haul!!! 😂 That brass, double-wick lamp was something I would've had to try for. Those old chamber pots actually make good rubbish "cans" in a bedroom. I use my grandparents old enamelware one in my bedroom as a rubbish "can". We have six decanters full of marbles from my dad. Some of them are clay ones. They are from the 1930s and '40s. That's a nice Toledo scale. I like that size. Congrats on the fish! I like that mattock, too. I'd put that to use round here. George, that was SUPER-FUN!!!!! It's been forever since I've been to a live auction. I would've loaded up at that one! Thanks for taking us along!!!
Why spraypainted that beautiful lady? There are powdered pigment paints out now that actually look like oiled bronze. I repaired a broken giraffe lamp and repainted it with oiled bronze color paint and it was gorgeous. I would have bought that cracked lady, fixed the crack and sold her for quite a bit. The best material for filling cracks and fixing chips is Dixie Belle Mud. I use up jars of that stuff one after the other. Great stuff. I have a piece now waiting for a new jar to arrive.
Color matching is the hard part. I took color theory in college and it was one of the hardest classes I had to take. Taking all those little chips and lining them up by shade and tint almost made me blind. I was never so shocked as when I learned that there is no green at all in khaki green. It is a shade of yellow. Sometimes I cheat. I take the piece with me to Michael's and go to where they have all those 2 dollar bottles of acrylic paint and try my best to match that way. You find you can get pretty close and usually with some primaries plus black and white you can get close enough to cover the mid after it cures and you seal it. Feather a couple layers of paint on and then the problem of choosing the glaze - matte, satiin, gloss or some mixture. My feeling is that fewer and fewer things are going to be in mint condition as time goes by. Italian ceramics, and other MCM pieces chip like mad. Forget Capidemonte - you can almost guarantee it is chipped without even picking it up. For young people looking for a niche in the art world, I highly recommend museum curation or restoration studies. It is very satisfying to be able to repair something that is damaged but still very much loved by someone. I love that English show The Repair Shop. And I am a huge fan of Daniel Silva's novels about the Israeli assassin whose cover is that he is a world class art restorer. If I had it to do over again and I was young, I would absolutely consider restoration as a career. @@TheAntiqueNomad
I enjoyed this auction video very much! What a surprise to see the Granite City Steel pocket knife, I was born and raised in Granite City, and dad and grandpa both worked many years at the steel mill!
Wow I can't believe on what some of those stuff went for if I happen to be there I would be getting a lot of the items I don't give up I liked alot of the stuff thank you for bringing us alongI'm learning more about the stuff thanks to you
This was a lot of fun George!!!! Thanks for taking us along . I was having a hard time hearing you over the auction and turning it up was worse. Then I turned on the CC. Perfection. It displayed on top of your text comments but it was way easier to follow along 😊
Great auction. The staff had got it down, they work well together. You got some cool items. My favourite was the scales. My grandma had a corner shop when I was little.I enjoyed going to the auction with you! Take care darling and love to you and Xeno xx
So much fun George! I really miss a live auction. Mkt. owner used to have one every month and I loved it. Had never been to one, but watched and learned. Actually became quite good at it. So glad you got your fish. Happy selling! Cat
I miss them, too. We haven't had them on Long Island in years. In fact, we have only recently started having live estate sales. During the pandemic we switched to online auctions. I am not fond of them but I must admit I do quite well at them most of the time.
That was a lot of fun George!! I've never been!! You have the patience to show so much at an auction! I'm happy you got the fish!! It was too expensive for my blood!! Thanks for the interesting video! You have an easy personality and with your knowledge of "old stuff" and reselling I could see why you're liked by the community!!
What a treat watching an auction they never started back having live auctions after Covid. Except for farms. We found them a fun social time and buying small things we could use. Please explain to me the popularity of the glowing glass. I must be missing something it just doesn’t appeal to me
@georgemoore-wg5jj Thanks for asking. Busier than usual. Getting ready to go back to California soon. Looking forward to doing some antique shopping out there. Happy Happy Holidays to you and yours!
That's an Emmet Kelly representation on the cookie jar. Just sending you this message because you've seen a different Kelly representation and, both times, just called it a hobo.
I absolutely love when you take us to the auction. In person auctions used to be my favorite sourcing place and I just love the atmosphere. Our local ones closed and only do online😢
That owl candle brought memories rushing back of selling those in the 70s. They were very popular too! Thanks for the instant memory and your extensive knowledge.
Thanks for this! Memories of my childhood growing up with my parents...so much education took place in those buildings! I use soda crates in my classroom for books! I always get comments on them! I have several Double Cola ones from Evansville.
George do you ever see old clothes for a raggedy Ann doll? My sister and I both had raggedy Ann's. Years later when her two daughters were getting older and she was getting rid of a bunch of their toys she found ab old raggedy Ann she thought was hers, bit when she took a closer look she saw the initials CC on the butt in magic marker. She realized it was my original doll and not hers so she gave it back to me. It's from the late 1950's or early 1960's. It has no clothes. Someday I would love to find original clothes for her.
I did not know that about "occupied Japan". Keep sharing that incredible knowledge you have, it makes us appreciate the past and the "things" we have from those past times.
That was cool. Gosh, I would have to just go and sit through a couple, to get used to the crazy pace etc. I am guessing that almost every auction is a little different. There are items that I can never touch with our online auctions, up here in Canada. I only luck out when there are items that no one knows what it is, so I get them for a low price. That seems few and far between these days with everyone hopping on the reselling band wagon. 🤪 I also understand that when times are uncertain, people invest in things and hang onto them to sell later.
I liked evthing you bought. Was glad u bought the fish! I was saying go for it George! I love live auctions. You really must have a firm price limit set in your mind. Easy to go crazy! Lol. My mean comedian side was flaring up. Hairpins. Biboveralls. Obese children. Mountain man makeover candidate. Sorry y'all. She comes out at times. A wise man once said " this place ain't a cultural mecca". Ya but, it's a whole lotta fun! Merry Christmas to one and all!
George, I can't thank you enough for this video...I so miss auctions as they're so few and far between where I am. It was nice that you kept the viewer involved instead of holding the camera down. Absolutely love the scale you got and straight razors! Thank you again and Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Hello, I would like to thank you for all the help and valuable information you have taught me /us; I'm trying to contact you; I have a high volume of items I need to make room running out. Soon, I'll be on the lawn..lol a lot of original art, and smalls, etc...In desperate need of your expertise, professional mannerisms, and ethical demeanor. Thank you, Ron
