I feel so very blessed to have been able to travel to Ireland, and, of course, I had to check out the local thrift and vintage stores! I’m excited to take you along on my shopping adventures and show you how thrifting in Ireland is both different and similar to shopping in the states. I found several home decor items that I couldn’t leave behind, and I can’t wait to show you what I brought home! Hope you enjoy this unique shopping experience!

The “salt” shaker is actually for keeping mustard in. It would have been part of a cruet set comprising a salt shaker, a ground pepper shaker, the mustard pot and a plate which the three items would have sat on. I’m Irish and enjoy your videos and tuto. I’m so glad you had a good time in Dublin.

Sherry, that silver cup is solid silver likely of 90% purity but could be pure or 99% silver. It was made in what is now Burma. It is called “Raj silver”, broadly, but this piece does not look like it was made in India. They are almost always unmarked. It is beautiful; I have many pieces as I collect it! A wonderful find!

I migrated to the UK from California in 2019 and I live in Notting Hill. Portobello Road is for tourists, and the cost to the vendors for their booths equally high. Fortunately, their are many charity (think thrift) shops all around with excellent prices. Oxfam is my favourite as it has separate store fronts for only books. I always pick up high quality art books at deep discounts. Happy you enjoyed Ireland! 😁👍🏼🇬🇧

Lesson learned. Next time you go to another country buy a suitcase big enough that you can put your regular suitcase inside of it, then when you get to your destination you will gave an extra empty suitcase. Make sure you can buy bubble wrap but wait till you make a purchase that needs it and then go buy that bubble wrap and use it for breakables. You’ll have to pay for the extra suitcase going home but still cheaper than shipping. Put all your receipts in an envelope and keep in your purse.

I think William Morris print seems to be everywhere in the UK at the moment, wallpaper, sofas, soft furnishings etc, very popular, and so nice to see! The charity shop furniture stores seem to be dotted about in areas that are cheaper to rent, so more out of town, and of course, furniture reaches a greater market by being sold on eBay, marketplace or auctions. Also in England, a lot of the charity shop’s prices are no longer that cheap, resale has pushed the prices up, you have to workout where the good ones are, and you seemed to be quite lucky in Ireland, and yes, they are predominantly clothing! Visit the affluent areas and there are a few bargains out there, but most shop managers use evaluators now, when in doubt, especially for jewellery, China and art! So funny, I think Catherine from Dainty Diaries from Ireland, bought similar plates with the animal prints a few weeks ago 😊

Canada has ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL, huge, beautifully organized thrift shops in the Hamilton, Ontario area, better than most US shops, and great prices! Clothes, furniture, home goods, books and craft supplies galore!! *Be sure to bring CA dollars.* One CA dollar right now = 76 cents US. You can exchange your money as soon as you cross the border into Canada. You will need a passport to get in and out of Canada, but you can fill up your car and bring back tons of stuff! I used to go once a year and the mega hauls I would bring home would last me for a year's upcycling. Highly, highly recommend!

In Dublin we give usually sell furniture locally ourselves on line, or give it away for free, as charity shops do not have space for them. larger unwanted or broken and worn furniture items are taken away to be recycled (that is if you buy a new sofa, the old one will be taken away free). Ps. Sometimes we clear them into a skip (large rubbish container which can be rented) and because it is on the street sometimes people will just ask if they can have the item. I hope this explains. Xx

I'm an alumna of Trinity College Dublin living now in the US for a very long time. Glad you got to visit TCD and enjoyed shopping at the charity shops. If you go back again, you can always mail items from Ireland back to the US. I'm sure some of the antique stores would help you in that regard. Also, as you live here, you can avoid paying VAT on anything that you bring back to the States. All you need to do is look for the tax free label on stores there and use your US credit card. When I go back, I always visit the Kilkenny Design Centre opposite TCD on Nassau St. The store is replete with Irish design items. There is also a great little café upstairs which I highly recommend.

Hi Sherry, lovely to see you visited us here in Ireland and enjoyed your trip to Dublin. You will have to come back and visit the countryside, you will find many little antique, curiosity and second hand shops. I am always so envious of your thrift stores, sadly our charity shops have become mainly clothes, shoes and books. There are some second hand furniture shops affiliated to St Vincents throughout the country but very few. Mostly people sell or give away their unwanted furniture on our 3 main free sales sites, Donedeal, Adverts and FB Marketplace. Enjoy your treasures and thank you for all your wonderful ideas. Take care M

What a fun haul! Thanks for letting us shop overseas vicariously through you. ☺ How did you get it all home without anything breaking?

We call thrift stores “Charity shops” in the UK…they are not nearly as good as your thrift stores. I’m alway envious when I see your thrift stores.

What an awesome adventure! The pillow cover is phenomenal and the blue & white plate is absolutely lovely. But I have to ask, how in the world did you get that beautiful lampshade home with no damage? 😀 Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us. 💝

Thank you! My suitcase was huge! The shade was able to sit upright, and I stuffed the center with clothes.

Maybe she did like my sister. The only room in the car was on her head so she wore it.

👌🏻That's what I thought as well: that it was part of a (cuckoo or grandfather) clock...those weights were/are most often shaped as pinecones ✌🏻

I think so, too. We have an old German coo coo clock and it has two of these.

I can see why you loved the large painting. Next time you travel and find a beauty like this, have it shipped. My mom actually bought a small table in Italy and had it shipped. From London she had a Wedgewood tea set shipped. Both were arranged by the store where she made her purchases and they arrived just fine. I bet you could phone the store in Dublin and they would sell you the painting and ship it to you.

Oh, you’ve got me thinking. I wonder if it is still there. I wish I had thought of shipping it when I was there! Thanks, Linda!

As an Irish woman I can not believe the old tat that Americans love and go mad for, you can get really nice pieces of brick-a-brack in most charity shops and car boot sales you just know where to go.
