This week I bring you along to thrift with me at the Goodwill Bins! We are doing something a little different and instead of reselling on Poshmark or eBay, we decided to take these pieces to consign at Crossroads. Consignment can be a great alternative to reselling itself, especially if you enjoy the thrifting a lot more than the legwork it takes to list those items.

I love the whole concept of this video. I was a young, stay at home mom who couldn't risk the family money to see if selling online in1998 would be profitable. I took $20 and bought my first inventory. I took the $60 profit and bought new inventory...and then too $150 profit...and then took $600 profit by the end of the first month. Back then I did auctions that started at .99 so I had a 100% sell through rate. I would have loved the bins back then. This is a wonderful message for young moms with little time and a little cash. ❤

This is exactly how I started reselling 2.5 years ago. Never went into debt. Never took money from our budget to make money. I was so excited when a pair of shoes I got free in a giveaway sold for $20. All profit and a decent chunk of money to invest in my business. Now I’m helping supplement income for our family ❤️

Great video! Yesterday I took 23 items from my own closet (not worth listing on Poshmark) and things I've picked up at the bins to Crossroads and Buffalo Exchange (in Portland). Both stores took 7 items each and in trade I made $84 at crossroads and $66.50 at Buffalo Exchange! I used the credit towards things to resell! This will be a new way to source for me! 😊

I wish I could buy per pound. The San Diego bins don’t charge by weight but by piece and the deal we’re given is 15 clothing items for $22 (so, $1.47 each) bit of you can’t find 15 items, then it’s $2.25 for men and women’s clothing (minus jackets). Our Goodwill Retail prices here is pricey: anywhere between $6 and $15, depending on the item. And the retail stores don’t do color tag sales like many other places. 😕

I’ve seen others who go to the bins and buy things for both reselling and consignment. They aim to get back everything they spent total at the bins through consignment so that everything they get from reselling is all profit. If we had a local bins, I’d totally follow this business method.

That’s what I do! I don’t have enough space in my college apartment to sell everything I find from the bins. I make all of my money back from clothes and shoes to take to platos. I keep a few items to sell myself, boxes to send into thred up, and I also take into a kids consignment store. It’s kind of like free inventory because I make my money back and then some w like three hours of work from just consignment! (It’s paying my rent and loans this semester so I’m happy w this business model)

I am an owner of a consignment store, and I also do Poshmark on the side. (I LOVE your channel and all of your business-minded concepts, by the way!!). Just wanted to share from an actual consignment store's point of view if this is helpful! First off, I do not have the buy/sell/trade business model, per se, such as a store like Crossroads, I mostly take clothing items in on consignment, then when the person's item sells, that is when they make their money. Pre-COVID, we were accepting clothing one day per week for cash or trade, but have not returned to that model yet. That being said, I have a couple of consignors off the top of my head, that do this type of buying/selling strategy (as well as myself, of course!). One in particular consignor goes regularly to the bins and brings her items to me to consign. On a regular basis, she makes about $500 per month PLUS anything that I don't take, she then takes to the other consignment stores in the area or sells them herself at an indoor "flea market" type booth. Since she started doing this, she has been able to scale back at her regular job to only two days/week and she is thrilled!! Oh how I wish I would have known about the bins when my kids were babies and I was trying to be a stay at home mom! I do love my business, though, and now that I have discovered selling on Poshmark with any store-owned or sourced myself items, I am doubling my profits every month! 90% of the stuff I get at bins goes to a local buy sell trade store I have in my area the rest on mercari which is mainly the stuff I know sells like vans, Victoria secret and use mercari to make my money back, the BST store gets the basis stuff like you can find at Ross or forever 21 and that’s all just pure profit :) Also occasionally sell to the real real if I find brands they take so there’s that as well as thredup for clothing donations people give me and stuff that doesn’t sell for me So I’m always having ways to get money for something

Great video as always! This offers incredible perspective. There is also value in the time it takes to photograph, measure, list, cross list and then SHARE an item a zillion times on Poshmark to account for. Plus then to package, ship, etc. There is definite value in the time and sweat equity invested in listing something yourself vs the quick flip model you outlined here.

Thanks for doing this experiment. I have so much unlisted inventory that I’ve been thinking of alternatives like this bc my storage space is pretty much full. I want to do some research on Thred up to see what things they mark up that might be worth sending in. I wasn’t really thinking you could make money off consignment stores bc I’ve seen other resellers get about $2 a piece but this got me thinking that it really depends on the kind of stuff you take (plain v. Trendy) I’m going to try and take some trendy stuff see how it goes. Wish me luck!

LOVE following you Mogi Beth! I have learned soooo much! Thank you! I have done ok with a similar stradegy! I shop for the .50 - $1 pieces at our really cheap rural thrift stores (do not have a close goodwill or bins) and look for specifically name brand shoes, jeans & dresses! Will also pickup blazers, sweaters and tops but I have had way less success selling those! I have gotten $120 out of about $40 worth of stuff I bought, they definitely have not taken everything I brought them either & I may end up having a yardsale to move a bunch of stuff I bought before researching much : name brands but unpopular styles - plain Ts or most uninteresting shirts in general do not do well for me online. Didnt get any lululemon or madewell, but I did find a free people dress & some eileen fischer! some amazing shoes for .50 a piece! really happy with the shoes

Thank you for this informative video. It all looks like a whole lot of work for very little profit. I would much rather thrift for items that are likely to sell for $50 or more on Poshmark without all the extra running around. There's always lots to find in the $50 selling range if you know what you're looking for and thanks to your videos, I know what to look for.

You can list. Look at ties and lingerie and similar light weight items that take up little space. I travel with a shoe box full of jewelry and list on the go. Shipping is easily doable as well.

I think it was fun to see and a great experiment. With that being said, I don't know that it would be viable everywhere since obviously some places do not have Goodwill bins and others just don't really tend to offer anything great in terms of brands ~~ in the times that I have personally gone to the bins I have tended to only find bread and butter brands (not that those don't sell but I would not think that the profit margin would be great in terms of the time spent digging through bins and then having to come home and steam and prep items to take to a consignment shop). Also with gas being $3 per gallon locally, if I am driving to get to the bins and to the consignment shop (in your case, multiple trips), that expense also needs to be factored into the overall profit. With all of that having been said, I think it definitely was a fun experiment and I agree that it could be a great way to make some extra cash if you didn't want to spend the time doing all of the steps necessary to sell on an online platform or if you didn't have a lot of space to house your inventory while waiting for it to sell.

Taking to a consignment store is a Last resort for me because they give you almost nothing for your things 😔 , they are hustlers just like us lol 😆 so sell online for more if you can ;) it’s good for a death pile that doesn’t have very good brands in it ;)

Agreed. Certain brand like BCBG, Chico's, etc. don't perform well on poshmark despite the high retail cost, but they do well at my local consignment stores. It's all about knowing which brands perform well where.

Oh, I wanted to share a tip I heard - instead of calling it a "death pile", call it your "opportunity pile". Because who wants opportunity just laying around, right?! Seriously, I got into the habit of seeing it as my opportunity pile and I swear it changed my whole mindset and motivated me to fix the flaws and list them. 🙂 best of luck.

@@carmena7976 yes 🙌 totally agree , I don’t have a pile . I believe in only picking up quality that will sell high , not little stuff anymore that won’t move . I keep my selling closet under 100 items . Makes it easier for me ;) I know this is not the norm . Ok but please don't take clothes from thrift stores just to resell them. Families in need are having a harder time buying quality clothes they need from thrift stores because resellers cause the prices to go up

Thrift stores are meant to help struggling people in need get the basic goods they need to survive. Trying to make money off of donated goods just drives up the prices

Basic goods don’t generally include designer dresses, etc., but regardless, the items at the bins didn’t get sold in their stores and the next stop after the bins is either a landfill or another country sold by the bale as textiles. The rubber from the soles of acceptable shoes goes towards making the “dirt” at playgrounds. Shopping at the bins for clothing is actually helping the environment and giving life to items that would otherwise in some way be discarded. Thrift stores are more so meant to use the money they collect from selling peoples donated goods and give it back to the community and those struggling. I’ve never walked into an empty thrift store, and that’s because they frequently have an abundance of inventory. It’s solely up to the store as to what they charge for items, why would someone buying things to resell have any affect on what they charge? If a thrift stores mission is truly to clothe the struggling, they would keep their prices low/consistent regardless of who was buying.
