In my opinion you did great getting to know the history of the ao dai. Thats how you show respect and appreciation to the vietnamese culture, but I think from there you are allowed to wear the vietnamese dresses however you want and customize it as much as it would fit your style. This is how fashion should grow and develop itself in this day of age. There is no better compliment for a garment that it could be worn by all people in every style and thereby be part of a new and original fashion evolution. Its how we keep this older garments with a history “alive” instead of just appreciating it by a dusty distance. And that would be very disappointing since the beauty and the craftmanship should still be part of the “living” world.

absolutely agree with this. i personally think as long as they are remade/styled in a modest manner (not showing too much skin since ao dai is a traditional dress) it would be fine.

Agreed that there needs to be a balance of fashion evolving so that we can continue to wear traditional items in a modern way so we don’t just waste their beauty gathering dust, but also at the same time I do believe some things need that extra bit of consideration and respect throughout this process.

I agree as well. I feel it's about HOW you wear it and the reasons why you chose to buy the garments. I have several vintage Kimonos. I have no Asian heritage but I love the beauty of each of them. They were in the back of a thrift/army surplus store and were all dusty and not getting any attention. I wear them like jackets for layering and get many compliments and I wear them out of respect for the person that handmade them. It makes me sad to see that someone didn't want to keep them and they end up just sitting in a store. What I don't like is people buying things like these beautiful pieces for Halloween or costumes. Mine are part of my winter wardrobe that I get excited to wear every year!

The yellow flower night gown is so beautiful, I feel it has to be shorter with bigger puffy sleeves, it will look stunning.

I love that vintage seersucker nightie and think it is perfect as a summer dress - like you said maybe shorten a little. The ao dai dresses are also beautiful, if you are not comfortable wearing them then they would look great hanging on a wall - I have a couple of vintage kimono's that I do this with as it gives me pleasure to look at them and reminds me of my trip to Japan. As others have said I think you were respectful and if you wanted to modify them I also think that would be ok, or maybe trace a pattern off them and make something inspired by them.

Love that idea. I’ve had them hanging out on display ever since I got them but making an actual spot for them on the wall would be epic. They’re honestly so beautiful!

Wow that video was such a breath of fresh air. I felt like when I was watching it I was right there with you and enjoying the gardens with you!! I am Chinese and we also have a similar dress like that and I am so grateful that you took the time to read into the history of those specific dresses. Since I’m Asian American I understand both sides of the traditional wear paradox. Part of me feels like I should wear the dresses, but part of me feels like a poser for not being 100% part of the culture. I think you did the right thing in terms of researching and asking a lot of questions before altering or wearing the dresses. I feel like a lot of the appropriation comes from not doing the research and not understanding the traditions and cultures behind the outfits and garments. Thank you for doing your research and sharing your research with us! I think the most important part is learning and appreciating other cultures, And you do that so beautifully! !

I love those ao dai that you got! We typically wear them during events or holiday seasons. There's actually a newer style that has a shortened top and an a-line skirt underneath. Those were the ones I had for my bridal party to wear. I think that could make is more weather appropriate. The sleeve length can also be changed to make it more casual or relaxed. The country side is so beautiful. Hopefully you got to recharge while being surrounded by nature.

Love seeing all of your thrift finds and the gorgeous country! Quick Q: I recently thrifted a pair of Men's cotton trousers from an outdoorsy-brand called Eddie Bauer. The pants fit me perfectly, but the zipper fly often falls halfway down, so I have yet to wear them out. Any tips on how to keep this from happening?
@cloudssburst
@cloudssburst 2 года назад
I attach a keyring-ring to the zip ‘handle’, when I’m zipping up I put the ring around the button and then close the trousers! Always works and you can’t see the ring :)
@TheEssentialsClub
@TheEssentialsClub 2 года назад
Ellie’s reply around the key ring is a great idea!! Otherwise if it gets to the point where it’s not cooperating you could try unpick it and replace it with a new one (or go to a clothing alteration shop with this brief if you’re not comfortable doing this yourself)

I read the whole article. This might sound like I'm going against the grain , but it made me wish showing skin wasn't considered dirty or disrespectful. To me if people are mindful of the origin anything they do looks pleasant to me.
@TheEssentialsClub
@TheEssentialsClub 2 года назад
No that’s great to be open to questioning/critiquing anything you read. I too don’t believe showing skin should be framed as dirty or disrespectful. I think she’s just sharing the shock of seeing other cultures take something of significance to them and then profiting off it as well as not honouring how it’s traditionally worn.
