Thrill Drive! The Best Arcade Racing Game You've Never Played! Konami Arcade

I have been trying to find a copy of Thrill Drive to add to my arcade PCB collection for over a year...and I've yet to find one! But apparently ONE VERSION of MAME supports Thrill Drive and if you have a beefy enough processor to handle it...it plays perfectly! And considering it is one of my favorite arcade racing games of all time...total win! Retrogaming gold Jerry!

I own a Konami Viper board that can play Thrill Drive 2...but I have always wanted to play the original Thrill Drive! And now I (and you) can! It's an arcade racing game that has some very high stakes...crash your car and you may just well die in game! It's an action packed retro gaming arcade racer you are basically guaranteed to love...or your non-existent money back.
Note: Use "MAMEUI64_0.147_17-09-2012" for Thrill Drive!

I actually played all 4 games in our arcades within the philippines, the first and second game was in another town and played both years ago. Thrill drive 3 is still up and running in my mall to this day and has a haptic seatbelt feature still working. The game encourages you to wear the belt and keep ringing a seatbelt alarm till you do and if you get into an accident the belt will automatically tighten against you. For obvious reasons the game cabinet also warns you not to wear the belt if you’re under 5’2 foot due to risk of strangulation. I would gladly send you a photo of the game cabinet still running here if you want, the whole cabinet ergonomics seem to be based on a bus

i have a core memory of this game from back when i was a kid and has stuck with me all these years, and i've been looking for what the name of the game was for years! it was me at an arcade and basically someone veering/crashing a red car off the road and a scream accompanying it. i was on a Discord call recently with some friends and i told them that memory, and they told me that Thrill Drive was the name and i looked it up and found this video. and THAT EXACT SAME SCREAM IS WHAT WAS ECHOING IN MY MEMORIES ALL THESE YEARS!! i'm glad to have found this video and i'm happy that you guys are preserving these games to be played in this day and age. y'all are legends! also that boxy-style car you're referring to is actually a Volvo 850 - those are really good cars and won some touring car races in its heyday!

The hardware that this game runs off of is similar to Konami’s Hornet system. I think it uses a combination of 3DFX voodoo chips and some other custom 3D maths chips. Basically, there’s a lot going on to make this game run. Konami really liked using funky hardware for their arcade games.

It really is one of the craziest and dramatic racing games that I have ever come across. I just made a couple of videos on the game which I played on the current version of MAME that surprisingly doesn't suffer a single crash during the play sessions I took with it. I can assume that emulation of the game on MAME has improved somewhat, even though the music now sounds different than how it did originally, which I assume that the new music in the current version of MAME matches that of how it did on original hardware albeit fast and poorly timed, and how it sounded like on when some of the music from the game was included on a Konami music compilation CD released in 1999.

There is a cracked version of Thrill Drive 3 and you can use any Python 2 arcade board for the cracked version (you can grab one from DDR Supernova series and any other game that uses the board). Don't confuse the Python 2 arcade board with the very first Python though. Despite both being based on PS2 hardware, Python 1 uses a modified PS2 board similar to Namco System 2x6 while Python 2 is basically a real PS2 with extra I/O boards. Edit: There is a 4th iteration of Thrill Drive named Crazy Streets - Thrill Drive that was released back in 2007 and it's PC-based, packing a Radeon X1600 Pro for graphics. This game is rare though, being only released in Europe and failed its location test in Japan and USA.

It's the first time I heard about this game and it creeped me out the moment I saw a crash, it really got my attention instantly and I wanted to play it so bad. I would say it would be even unsettling if there's a display of the driver (us) showing a confident attitude, getting some grunts when having little crashes, but with a serious accident, we see the driver shocked, panicking and panting, with the 3 accidents, the driver pants even faster and having scars on the face. It definitely would be much creepier than it already is but yeah, that would be total trauma for many ppl.

This makes me wanna fire up Wreckless: The Yakuza Missions real badly all of a sudden, lol. It's sad because I know it looks kinda similar (thanks to the kinda gray look to both games), but doesn't play as well as this sounds. Man... why couldn't Konami port this to Dreamcast or PS2 back in the day? It looks awesome. I love the older pre-Paradise Burnout games, so I love games with good crashes, but the actual stakes here in that you could end your race by dying... that just sounds like a good wrinkle to that kind of very tense, arcadey "spectacle" racer. I am shocked no other game (I can think of, at least) has this kind of gameplay hook. At the very least, "You can die from crashes" should be, like, a MODE in Burnout Takedown/Revenge/Dominator. This seems really fresh! Glad I know about it now!

I don't go in arcades anymore my first home computer was a spectrum, twice a year I would go to Skegness Butlins and loads of arcades, for years it was Daytona USA then one year a new machine pops up and that machine was Thrill Drive, holy crap it looked amazing..... The story is I grew up seeing how arcade games changed from pac-man, Tekken, Mortal Combat, Turtles, to Out Run, Daytona USA, to games like Thrill Drive, every year something new never seen before was waiting to entertain, growing up in the late 80s early 90s was incredible, the games were great the movies were great and the music was great, jobs paid well, items were cheap and the greedy governments taxed us little and did more....
