Black drummer, rock blackfish, pigs, black tanks... Whatever you call them, these bruising brawlers of the southern suds are very special fish. They fight harder and taste better than just about anything else you'll catch in our cool inshore waters... IF you can land them! Tricky to hook and even harder to stay connected to, drummer tick all the "challenge" boxes for me. Join me for a morning session on my local rocks and I'll show you how I choose to target them!

Another great bread and butter fishing video. Nothing better than getting feed while having a great time. You never get sick of fish fighting on the end of your line no matter what it is. Thanks

Ive been on the fence for a while whether to target drummer on braid or mono, this vid convinced me to rig up some braid and give it a crack. I ended up with 25lb siglon 4 strand with 20lb vanish leader, just not brave anough to go to 10lb, i hate leaving hooks in fish. Put it on a penn slammer 560, 12foot shimano raider light surf and rigged up number 2 bean ane 1/0 gamkatsu octopus hook. Tried that spot this arvo, didnt have time to get fresh bait so bought some hawksberry prawns from tweed. Ended up with 2 nice bream, a sambo, and missed some huge strikes that wouldve been drummer. The gami octopus hooks are amazingling sticky, no chance of losing a fish from a pulled hook. Had to go once I'd caught about a hald dozen undersized bream, which had no issues eating the 1/0s

Hi Steve Great vid again, so reminds me when I was supposed to be at uni but I wagged it to go fishing, mostly for Luderick off the stones I was rewarded now and then with a decent pig when I could stop one. I always kept it out of the bunch to eat myself and palmed off the Luds.

I really enjoyed this one Steve. Rock fishing is something that I've never done and at 75 I'm not going to start now 🙂 I like the look of a Black Drummer and would like to try eating one. They sound delicious from what you say. Maybe I'll stick to trying to catch Whiting, which I love eating BTW 🙂. Thanks again for your videos Steve

What an awesome video Starlo! Thankyou for sharing your tips, insights and passion. Particularly loving the videos in your beautiful home town - my grandfather and father built a cottage on T. Boulevard in the 60s and I have the best memories of holidays spent there with family well into the 90s (and with the next gen beyond). That's where Dad (now passed) taught myself and my siblings how to fish. A gift I am so grateful for 🎣❤

So much fun on the silly string Starlo, also, myself being from Narooma, when I was down on those exact particular rocks last time (around a year ago) there was a big ol lancet fish around 6 foot long and fresh enough to eat washed up that I threw in and all the drummer and bream went crazy for! bunt unfortunately for them a little bronzy ruined it for them 😂 do you recall seeing any large pelagic's washed up there?

Tried again a couple of days later and was loaded full of your favourite size of Sambos Starlo. Good fun, could be worth having a couple of small slugs in the kit with single hooks on em, to save some bait and have some fun. Especially since its a braid outfit.

Mucking around with family one day on holiday with baits and lures around mystery bay i found some cunjie on the beach and a cast in around the kelpy rocks found me hooked up but no sure if groper or drummer,took some line then reefed me up gd.7ft 3-6kg lure rod on a 2500 reel 8lb line 8lb leader.i didnt win

Great video Starlo. Love that sort off fishing. In the last couple years I have been targeting the pigs when I get to Merimbula, have been using the weed off the rocks in a similar fashion with the sinker running directly to the hook. Similar question are you getting better results with the braid, I am still using mono.
@StarloGetsReel
@StarloGetsReel Год назад
They're great fish. I love the braid. Better bite detection, hook setting and fish control, I reckon.
@stuartlackas7221

@@StarloGetsReel Cheers Starlo for the reply. I use braid for almost everything else, just not for tough fishing close to the rocks. I have noticed in a lot of the fishing videos the guys use braid with leader. I get a lot of snags so was worried about having to tie leader all the time. Maybe I am just letting it sit too long. Will keep watching a few more to get some more tips. Tight Lines.

Another nice video, Starlo! I usually do lure fishing only, but after watching many of your beach and rock fishing videos, I finally decided to give it a go myself. 😂 Question: I notice you generally use braid instead of mono for beach and rock fishing with bait, contrary to many other mono-only beach anglers. Is it because of its sensitivity? Are there any drawbacks using braid over mono for baiting? Many thanks.
@StarloGetsReel
@StarloGetsReel Год назад
I love my braid: cast further, smaller sinkers, less drag on the line, better bite detection and hook setting... it's win, win, win in my book.

Fucken oath Starlo - alot of my non- fishing friends who love seafood have been turned onto your videos only to realise that anglers take what they need, not what they can take - and sometimes you have to put the yards in for the results. I have been showing a few youngsters how to catch and cook their haul - your book from many moons ago The Australian fishing book" is still something inshow them - in biblical proportions especially the fish with cheese sauce recipe - a banger for WA Dhufish fillets. All the best and tight lines \m/

thanks for your great video!!! I'm very curious to know how you set up your line! do you use any floats? or just a sinker? I'm still getting my head around with the depth as well because most of my friends tell me to aim between 7-10m deep but in many other videos it seems to be only about 4-6m deep. Do you have any tips for newbie angler? 🥹
@StarloGetsReel
@StarloGetsReel 7 месяцев назад
I was just rigged with a small sinker running down to the hook, and those fish were mostly coming from between about one and two metres of water, perhaps up to three at the very most.
