Choosing plant protein foods over animal proteins provides powerful health advantages and can have a significant effect on climate change (greenhouse gas emissions, water use and pollution; land use and acidification). In this presentation, Dietician Vesanto Melina will answer many of your most pressing questions about protein from plants. How much protein do we need: as percent of calories? In grams per day? Can people get enough protein and all the essential amino acids without animal products? Why did we start thinking that protein from cheese and meat is better, and plant protein is inferior? Do vegans and vegetarians get enough protein? Is plant protein as good as animal protein? If we adopt a plant-based diet do we need to carefully combine beans and grains? Can top athletes compete successfully when their diets include no animal products? Does eating beans give us gas? If we are advised to eat 3 servings of legumes, must I eat 3 bowls of beans daily?
How can I build in protein at each meal? What might be a typical day’s menu that gives enough protein and is tasty? Also, If I am not an experienced cook, how can I get started?
Are plant-exclusive diets suitable for every stage of the life cycle? Can seniors avoid sarcopenia while eating only plants? Can we build muscle with plant protein? Should we take protein supplements? Branched chain amino acids? Leucine? How can we keep our bones strong as we age? Why do some seniors lose muscle, and how can we prevent that as we age? Why is exercise important for seniors, and what types do we need? What’s a good food guide for protein-rich plant-based eating?
All of these questions, and more, can be answered in the book Plant Powered Protein.

A great guest, someone who shows at 81 that they are thriving not just existing like most people do. Also for busting those myths about eating whole food plant-based food. It’s great too that you bring up the point that you have issues with beans which to me are a staple of my diet. Not everybody is the same. your perspective is always so valuable.💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

A lot of women have a problem with the texture of beans, chewing them. That has what I found in this area. It's so sad, they would rather chew on dead birds, pigs, cattle & fish!

Great video! Yes I agree Indian foods are some of my favorite! Asians eat a lot of savory soy bean dishes. I remember my parents loved a savory soy milk soup with vegetables for breakfast. Yes, I absolutely agree, whole food plant based is the key to protect our metabolism and reduce inflammation.😊

I have beans and lentils all the time. I cook batches of them and make runny houmous, to use as a dressing , make tomato sauce and jar up portions of baked beans. I use the beans to thick soups or make sauces by blitzing beans. If I don’t want to include them in my meal I’ll eat a couple of spoonfuls of them before I start my meal. They are great in salads, stir frys, soups, stews, burgers, falafels, the possibilities are endless. Once you eat them regularly they don’t cause lots of gas. Make sure you gradually build up though and if gas is an issue then leave them off for a day and give your gut a chance to calm down then go again.

I am enjoying this interview, I love to see older people sharing their life skills with younger generations. I come from a family that live to be 100 or more and remain healthy right up to the end. Just think how long they could live a vibrant healthy life if they went plant based. I guess I will be the first one to try this experiment. I am 67 and have been plant based for 5 yrs, maybe I should get her book for my siblings.

Great show, AJ! I really appreciate watching interviews with people 80+ years of age. I enjoy observing the vitality of older people. It gives me an idea of how my personality may function when I (hopefully) reach their ages.

As a WFPB eater, I can get up to 40 grams of protein at breakfast. (I do sometimes for lower protein meals, use collagen builder powder,) but most of my meals are from grains, legumes, veggies, and fruits

I love tofu, beans, soy in any form, and any other vegetables. I can’t believe how easy it was to switch to vegan after reading the China Study. I was always a fussy picky eater before. Not anymore. And with Chef AJ’s recipes, I am a happy camper.

Try using the superfoods like wheat germ, brewers & nutritional yeast, flax. These are loaded with extra protein, vitamins & minerals. Also blackstrap molasses for lotsa vitamins & minerals.

Hi, not eating and drinking with meals is so important, as well as allowing 5 hours between each meal, not mixing fruits and vegetables at the same meal. Many people are highly allergic to beans . Eating beans 3x a day is way too much protien especially for someone with kidney problems
