You've got to love how good this scene is on a 2nd watch. Ransom is sitting here knowing exactly what's in the will. He came for the show and while everyone is telling him how good it is he's out of the will, he's stocking up ammo to throw right back at them the moment the next scene happens.

Walt was the one who was hardest on Ramson here and I think that's exactly why. He knows he doesn't have a real job or real responsabilities and is just cashing his symbolic position on dad's company, from which he has been fired. So deep down, he knows how little he earns and must tell himself "at least I'm not like Ramson, who is proud of being just a heir being financed by grandpa without a job." Ramson is proud of being what they all pretended they werent.

Ransom was no different than his rotten-to-the-bone family, but honestly he had more wit and freewill than all of them. I mean notice how despite his family’s absurd reactions and criticism he stayed cool and calm the whole time. He pretty much owned the room in this scene.

🤔 Linda had her moments when she was just as intelligent. Like realizing right away how Blanc tried to bate her, she knew her dad well enough to decode his letter to her and play games with him. However she could be blinded when it came to their family's ego being hurt with Marta inherited everything Harlem had.

God I love how many layers there are to this scene, based on the audiences knowledge and perception Layer 1: Ransom acts confident because he is a cocky asshole who thinks he is beyond consequences Layer 2: Ransom acts confident because he knows something the others doesn’t Layer 3: Ransom acts confident so the family builds up their arrogance for the big reveal Layer 4: Ransom acts confident because he is convinced Martha will get convicted and all the families problems will be fixed

He worked out she was involved pretty much instantly, but had faith in her good nature. He keeps checking to see if she's cleaned the blood off her shoe throughout the movie because an actual murderer wouldn't have left it there, but the thought never crossed her mind that she'd even have Harlan's blood on her because even though she thinks herself a murderer the whole time - she doesn't have the mind of one. He could have wrapped the case up instantly with the blood, but he knew there had to be far more to the story.

Chris Evans and Scarlet Johanssen actually did an interview back in 2019 discussing about how they have to do superhero roles to become bankable stars that studios are willing to takes risks on so that they can go on to focus on starring in films like Knives Out or Marriage Story.

Johansson wants to get another sci-fi like Glazer’s Under the Skin funded? She can do it. Marvel made them “name talents.” Now it’s all about how they spend that goodwill.
