Thrombocytopenia (Nursing & NCLEX Review)
When assessing primary hemostasis, a platelet count from the complete blood count is obtained initially. A platelet count of less than 150,000/mm3 is considered abnormal, but bleeding from thrombocytopenia usually does not occur until the platelet count falls below 20,000/mm3. Thrombocytopenia can be caused by decreased bone marrow production, splenic sequestration due to splenomegaly, or peripheral destruction of platelets by the body's own immune system.
