You didn't need to put your foot on the brake to change to reverse, just move the stalk up. That even works if you are still rolling forward. Really useful when manouvering my Y. Only criticism is the turning lock! And you are not old enough yet, I am 67 and took to that one pedal like a duck to water. Do it for a couple of weeks, I don't think you will be back. On spirited cross country jaunts it is so easy to balance your speed on that one foot. The charging experience says it all........... Superchargers! Just get a Tesla

We all learned to drive at first, and things felt weird until we got used to it. One pedal driving is much like learning to drive again. But once you get used to it, it really is quite easy and relaxing. My wife was scared to death to even drive the Tesla, much less use one-pedal driving. But she is a pro now and wouldn't go back. Great job on the pedal cam, that was fantastic!

My wife wanted creep mode, so I set it up for her in her Tesla profile, after a while, I noticed she was using regen a lot, so without telling her, I changed it to HOLD mode. She didn't even notice. ;-)

Great video and thanks for the pedal cam - have watched others talk about one pedal and never show their feet in action, which is handy to see if you've never driven a Tesla. My wife pushed back on one pedal at first, having been a driver for decades and thought she couldn't get used to it, it was too weird. Convinced her to try it for a few days, but it only took her maybe a day to get comfortable with it, and now she's all about one pedal driving. Our second car is an ICE and it's a little tedious to drive it the "old" way. As others have said, no need to press the brake to shift gears. One pedal really is so much better.

Re your question "12.59": it is analogous to a 'throttle" in the classic carburettor sense where reducing pressure on the pedal increases the extent of throttling of the intake, causing the engine to decelerate. I appreciate that the process is completely different in the Tesla - but the overall behavior is similar. I have used the one-pedal system (M3LR) from the start and it only took a few hundred miles before it became completely intuitive. Persevere; you never know, you may like it.

Yup.. I love the sensitive responsive control both "directions"... it is SO much fun on curvy mountain downhill roads! It's like driving stick-shift in low gear, but... w/ infinite speed/RPMs, don't have to shift, and no engine noise/vibration... just smoother.

I've had my Model Y for a day and absolutely love one-pedal driving. It feels as if you're one with the car. Admittedly, I try to use the brake pedal as little as possible in my ICE car, preferring the car to slow down by backing off the throttle for a smoother drive. One-pedal driving is just an extension of that. I'm a few years older than you! Each to their own, but I do love your RU-vid content. Keep it going!!

Don’t blame age on your one pedal driving hang up. It took me less than 30 minutes to acclimatise and I am 75. I will say it catches me out occasionally when the car in front stops more quickly than I expected. Then use the foot brake but I now go weeks without the brake pedal.

Like Ray below, I'm even older, greyer and fuddier than you and just as rural and I switched my Y to 'hold' mode on day one and have never been even slightly tempted to use any of the other modes (except as brief experiments)! In fact my main criticism is that 'hold' mode is not aggressive enough. In my view, the car should NEVER move against the selected drive direction, or begin to move in the direction of drive, without the pedal being depressed. Do not know it it is just my car, or if this is general (tests would be welcome!), but mine will release hold on steep hills (such as my driveway) and will move forward when reverse drive is selected (for example on the step at the threshold of my garage). Another annoyance is it will not let you ride the brake, making it sometimes VERY hard to start moving smoothly on a steep hill (I think this is true in all modes). What I have found really hard to adapt to is Autopilot. I find supervising Autopilot really stressful, much more stressful than driving myself (though slightly less stressful than being a passenger with a driver younger than myself!). But even when I am with a really bad driver, I can distract myself and not pay attention to the road which I cannot do with Autopilot. I really do not get the point of this automation until you can trust it completely, and until Tesla takes full responsibility for insurance!

I'm 67 I have had a M3P for a month and honestly I found it so easy to adjust and my previous car was a Jaguar diesel automatic which obviously creeped as all ICE autos will. My partner drove the M3P for the first time and she is a similar age and also found it so easy - we have both said we're not going back - and don't forget you'll be saving on brake pads and discs!!

Try one pedal driving for a month before making a decision. It's no different than switching to automatic and it's creep after years of manual driving . One pedal driving at the beginning is more effort but not once you're used to it

Hi Ian. When I was in the BMW car club, we used to have many track days, and the club hired professional racing cars drivers to 'train' us how to drive 'correctly'. Number one thing was in an automatic, we only have 2 pedals. We also only have 2 legs & feet, therefore we can assign one foot for the throttle, and the other for the brake. I have been driving like this for 40 odd years (I am now 70). On the track, I would come in super hot to a corner, dab the brake (with the left foot), AND already have the throttle pressed to accelerate out of the corner. (search YT for rally driving foot pedals). Using 2 feet like this eliminates the time spent moving the right foot from the throttle to the brake and back again. It also means there is NEVER a mistake made when accelerating or braking. Right GO, left STOP. It took me a while to get the hang of it, and now I have had to modify my muscle memory to do it the Tesla (HOLD) way - which is really just a refinement of what I've been doing for years. I started with HOLD mode from day 1, and I do it slightly different to you (but I'm not saying I am 'right')... When decelerating coming up to a stop light, I don't take my right foot off, I leave it partially pressed to 'finesse' the amount of regen (similar to the flappy paddle regen in a Kona). Get it just right, and with practice I manage to stop at the correct place most of the time. DOWNHILL is a bit more difficult because sometimes no matter how much regen I have, it isn't enough to stop, so here's where the left foot braking comes in. I also HOVER my left foot over the brake when passing a bus, or going through an intersection (just in case there is a red light runner, or someone turns in front of me for example). In summary, each to his own though. If you are happy doing it the way most people do it (like my wife for instance) that is fine by me. However, if you are already retraining your muscle memory, you might want to try it all out ! (Just my 2 cents worth). Regards, Greg.

It took me a day to not only get use to it, but to actually like it. My foot is still sometimes going to the brake when it doesn’t need to. Learning how the angle of foot on the juice pedal affects the the speed takes time.

One pedal driving just seems the natural progression (and saves even more money by lessening brake use) - a Tesla takes the EV to a new level rather than just swapping the Nguni, and so it seems right to also have this, more simple way of driving… push down to go faster pull back to go slower! 👍🏼

I'm afraid I'm a holder not a creeper! I guess it's what you're used to. If you've mainly driven automatic cars in the past then no doubt creep mode would feel much more natural. I've only ever owned manual gearbox cars before my Model 3 so I never felt the need for creep! I have to admit the first time I test drove a Model 3 though my left arm did twitch as I pulled out of the car park as I prepared to grab second gear! After about 10 minutes though I'd got used to the regen braking and was judging it quite nicely.

My MY is on the way, I'm keen to try and work on the one pedal driving. I think by biggest worry is that we have two cars - one EV, one ICE and I'll have to convert driving style depending on the vehicle I'm operating. Hopefully I can meet the challenge.

Instincts DO take time to change, and change back! I knew I was fully converted when teaching my teen to drive, and for the typical parental "shadow braking" as we get nervous,... I RAISED my foot, instead of press into floor! :) Once you do get used to it, it is SO much better, and MUCH finer & smoother control, vs the brake and trying to "hold back" the car. Switching a lot, may be a pain... driving my wife's ICE, I hate the lurching and jerking, and vibrating and smell, ugh! No going back!

Hi Ian. Just a comment on your last statement, that the place you spent 8 minutes before charging - they should have had a Tesla destination charger... I went for a drive the the Dandenong Ranges yesterday (27 Jan 24) and specifically went to an up-market bakery because the had 2 Tesla destinations chargers. When I arrived, one of the 2 chargers had been removed, and the remaining one sort of half worked, up to the point of actually supplying some power. My ICE driving passenger kindly pressed the RESET button on the charger - nothing happened. We want in, spent 25 minutes in the queue waiting to order, and spent AU$28 for 2 cakes and a coffee. When we left, I had another go, this time I 'PRESSED AND HELD' the reset button. Sadly it made no difference - so this is a word of warning, just because there is a Tesla charger, it doesn't mean it is going to work !
@justgetatesla
@justgetatesla 8 месяцев назад
I did a video last year where I went looking for destination chargers at a hotel and found they had been ripped out. Even worse, they had replaced them with a bank of new chargers with no sign of what network they were on or how much they cost. I later found out they charged an ounce of gold per kWh…

The bit that still freaks me out is trying to reverse down a slope where you have to apply throttle rather than moderating the brake...
@cgamiga
@cgamiga Год назад
It took a little bit to get used to , but one-pedal is SO much better than creep+brake... the Tesla throttle control is SO smooth and fine, it is MUCH more responsive to your foot than the brake is. (You DO need to learn good fine motor control though, or start in Chill mode, else get carsick... one tip, go by PRESSURE rather than position, both press in and let up, for accel/decel... even subconsciously as you adjust pressure w/o thinking about it, the car responds, it's so nice! I really like the safety factor for one-pedal, that it starts slowing *immediately* when you lift your foot up , so that even for a panic full brake, you get a fraction of a second of faster braking from regen, before your foot even hits the brake pedal. That might make the difference in an accident... they saw that in moose test or other driving...
@greghudson9717
@greghudson9717 8 месяцев назад
This is exactly the reason I use LEFT foot braking. Using the right foot for accelerate/decelerate is fine, but when yo REALLY need to stop in a hurry, the left foot can react faster, especially if your left foot is hovering over the brake pedal.
