Through Deaf Eyes explores almost 200 years of Deaf life in America and presents a broad range of perspectives on what it means to be deaf. The film is propelled by the stories of people, both eminent and ordinary, and sheds light on events that have shaped Deaf lives.
The companion book is available at gupress.gallaudet.edu/Books/T...
This video contains closed captions.

Through Deaf Eyes references the 1927 film, The Jazz Singer, because it was the first movie to incorporate synchronized music and speech, and its release heralded the end of the silent film era. For deaf audiences, the film was significant because it represented the end of access to Hollywood movies. Through Deaf Eyes contains a clip from The Jazz Singer that features an actor in blackface. The timestamp in which this clip appears is 32:57-33:06.
The use of blackface was racist and offensive in 1927, and it is racist and offensive now. Gallaudet University Press does not condone the use of blackface or any other acts of anti-Black behavior.

I starting bawling at that poor man describing how he wanted a date so he wouldn’t be different from his friends but was too nervous and uncomfortable to ask his mother to phone for him. AGB was awful. Way to make an invention your deaf mother and wife can’t use and make things so much harder for them by enforcing oral language.

why cant this world just accept everyone for who they are

I had this lady at church who taught us Christian songs in sign language growing up. I had no idea she was deaf, I just thought it was part of the song and I loved it. I’ve been learning ASL for awhile, and my niece does have a speech impairment, and sometimes can’t verbally word what she wants, how she feels, etc. She did go to speech therapy, but to help her express herself better especially when potty training her, I would tell her “Mila, this means bathroom okay. So if you have to go, use this sign okay” because she won’t tell us until she has an accident, or if we don’t catch her talking to us. Helps a lot, or I ask her in ASL “all done?” “More” “Milk” “Juice”, etc. It helps especially if we’re all talking, and she taps us and signs us what she wants, because she mumbles when she talks or mispronounce things, or just points.

I wish everyone could see this, it will change your whole world. For one thing, I went from being indifferent towards Alexander Gram Bell to hating him passionately. Seeing how the Deaf community overcame it and rose up literally brings tears to my eyes
