During the holiday season, we have so many incredibly cheerful songs to sing. These songs bring joy to countless people and possibly even remind us of fond memories from our childhood. But what if the holiday season is difficult for some people? Are there any songs that articulate feelings of sadness and loss?
Over the span of two months during the summer of 2023, I lost five people who were very close to me; my grandmother, aunt, great uncle, a cherished coworker of eight years, and a student. As someone who has not dealt with a lot of loss in my life, I wanted to find a way to not only cope with my own emotions regarding these losses but also empathize with others who may struggle with loved ones not being around during the holiday season. This piece is meant to do just that and remind everyone that “love will guide us through the shade.” I truly hope this song helps you as much as it has helped me through this difficult time.
