What’s also great about the monsters being real is that Mystery Inc don’t know how to defeat them. Lena, Simone and Jaq having a celestial deadline is a stroke of luck and the zombies being laid to rest by the felonious feline trio failing to meet this deadline is also very luck based. When the zombies come for the group all they can do is run. They’ve wisened up to the mystical lore to a certain degree by the next movie, where they resolve the Witch’s Ghost by using the same mystical logic that released her in order to trap her again. The movies expanding and evolving this could have been interesting, where the group’s ongoing involvement with magic and mystic has an impact on their credibility, or they start to bring the logic and science intermixing with the magic.

@matthewmazzatto8003
@matthewmazzatto8003 2 года назад
@@CassandraPantaristi Legend of the Vampire is the 5th film of the chain of Scooby-Doo movies that Zombie Island kicked off. It's also when the Scooby-Doo movies fully reverted back to the "Classic" Formula: a few greedy people in masks (and/or with tech) trying to scare away people to make money, gain fame, etc. They were already going back to this route in Alien Invaders and Cyber-Chase though. The main villains were people trying to either get rich (Alien Invaders) or drive away competition (Cyber-Chase). You'd occasionally see a true monster in later installments (like the Ghost Samurai in Samurai Sword), but they became much more sparse after Alien Invaders. This wouldn't be a bad thing if the plots were good, but they're largely not. I wish we got more movies like Zombie Island and Witch's Ghost as well.

Yeah, that's the thing. My own childhood had seen a LOT of violent TV and I didn't like other's pain (mostly involved real-life magicians and their violent tricks), but my folks explained things to me and how it was all fake. No one was seriously hurt, and people were actors in a play. While I still don't like certain violence (in horror), I choose not to watch what I don't like; simply changing the channel. However, I grew up on Scooby Doo (60s series) and 'The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest' and LOVED The Trilogy of Scooby Doo movies with real monsters! I was so in awe with everything, is that I wasn't afraid at all! I even watched 'Scooby Doo on Zombie Island and the others on my Aunt's TV set! ^^

This new series is starting off with a bang. Zombie Island was always the most popular movie in the fandom, but now we have an in depth and articulated video explaining why. That segment starting at 23:56 when you explain how the Werecats and Zombies/Ghosts have reasons for why they act the way they do was great. What really hit home was when you showed that even if the Werecats were sympathetic in their origin, they have since become the monsters that Moonscar and his pirates were. You did the same with the Confederate soldiers and Moonscar, they may have aided the gang and were thankful for their souls being freed but they still did horrible things in life. That complexity is something I really enjoy in characters. Can't wait to see you tackle other cartoons with dark themes like Atlantis. Though I am unsure what dark themes are in El Dorado, aside from the whole Cortez thing since he was barely in the movie but his actions would still happen offscreen while Miguel, Tulio and Chel go adventuring at the end.
@TheDopestOfShit
@TheDopestOfShit 4 года назад
I agree, the dichotomy of being tormented souls victimized by pagan werecats while being Confederate soldiers willing to die to keep men enslaved and pirates who raped and pillaged is one I hadn't picked up on as a child, but one I appreciate now looking back. This video was necessary to highlight the excellence achieved in storytelling many of us overlooked or missed.

Yes, totally wasn't about slavery. Let's have a look at what the traitor states had to say in their declarations of secession, shall we? Mississippi: "Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth. These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun. These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization. That blow has been long aimed at the institution, and was at the point of reaching its consummation. There was no choice left us but submission to the mandates of abolition, or a dissolution of the Union, whose principles had been subverted to work out our ruin." What about the champion of historical revisionism, Texas: "Texas abandoned her separate national existence and consented to become one of the Confederated Union to promote her welfare, insure domestic tranquility and secure more substantially the blessings of peace and liberty to her people. She was received into the confederacy with her own constitution, under the guarantee of the federal constitution and the compact of annexation, that she should enjoy these blessings. She was received as a commonwealth holding, maintaining and protecting the institution known as *[would probably get blocked on this channel]* slavery-- the servitude of the African to the white race within her limits-- a relation that had existed from the first settlement of her wilderness by the white race, and which her people intended should exist in all future time. Her institutions and geographical position established the strongest ties between her and other slave-holding States of the confederacy. Those ties have been strengthened by association. But what has been the course of the government of the United States, and of the people and authorities of the non-slave-holding States, since our connection with them?" Or how about the main traitor, the inbred, the legend, South Carolina: "The General Government, as the common agent, passed laws to carry into effect these stipulations of the States. For many years these laws were executed. *But an increasing hostility on the part of the non-slaveholding States to the institution of slavery,* has led to a disregard of their obligations, and the laws of the General Government have ceased to effect the objects of the Constitution." How strange, I thought the north loved slavery, a RU-vid comment with no sources told me so after all. Read about "fugitive slave laws", the refusal of the northern states to comply with those was one of the main reasons for the South to turn traitor. The constitution of the confederacy also explicitly forbid its member states from abolishing slavery. Those must be those states rights I hear so much about.

@@sherlocksmuuug6692 yeah it's funny as shit when people say that the Civil War wasn't about slavery when most of the states in the declaration of succession explicitly cited slavery for their reasons for leaving.

Zombie Island I think got in that super hard spot that it is creepy for kids but didn't make them have nightmares, at least for what I remember everyone loved this movie a lot, I think the fact that the zombies being the good guys and the main villains not being super scary helped on this. And then came the other movies that I still get sad remembering being hyped by the witch one...
@BabyGirlTiny
@BabyGirlTiny 4 года назад
The zombies weren't exactly the good guys and the women werent exactly the bad guys and that's what makes this film so good. Lena and simone are only doing what they have to do because they've traded their lives to get revenge against the pirates who killed their entire colony. Theres this nuance of, they're bad so we killed them, now we have to drain people's life energy, all the while the spirits of the island are trapped and want to escape and warn the people.

@ANite-vx1vk
@ANite-vx1vk 4 года назад
Well, the "good guys" sold their souls for retribution and became the very thing they hated. Even worse in some ways. The bad guys became the lesser of two evils by comparison, and only realized their screw up once a couple of magic pagans killed them. Still evil, just second to mass murdering magic cats. They weren't even really being the good guys either when you step back? They were killed and lingered, probably for revenge, warding people away. Eventually the werecats would die without anyone to feed on, so it was kind of a self serving goal with a silver lining? There were no good supernatural in this movie.
@BabyGirlTiny
@BabyGirlTiny 4 года назад
@@alexanderchristopher6237 they never swore to destroy anyrhing. All they wanted was revenge against their people. If you really think about it, that was their land and anyone who come on it was trespassing like the pirates. Like the pepper plantation guy was trespassing even if he didn't know. Plus, they were doing what they did to survive. Yeah luring people is bad, but still survival non the less. Nothing about the pirates suggested the same

I loved the deeper messages. I was young enough that I didn't understand everything that was happening, but the pirates vs. the catwomen is the kind of thing that can teach a kid everything they'll ever need to know about conflict. That's the power of media, that's why you give kids things like Harry Potter: Good books that are slowly teaching them about the extremely hard topics (like human mortality) in a very easy to digest way. They may not understand all of it in the moment, but it will stick with them and as they get older their able to sort it out, piece by piece into fully formed opinions and thought of my own. I'm not really sure how many people realize how much storytelling helps us process our thoughts and feelings. (But then again, maybe take a writer's musings on their craft with a grain of salt?)

Thank you for making this video, Zombie Island brings back some beautiful memories. I saw it for the first time on Halloween in 1998 I believe, after a long successful night of Trick-or-Treating. The movie blew me away with how much more evolved it was than anything Scooby had ever been. The unique premise as well as it being a feature length presentation and the high quality of animation set the bar so high for future scooby doo movies. I haven't kept up with Scoob and the gang since my mid-teens, but this was by far the best thing I had seen from the franchise. It's super interesting to hear as an adult how all of this came to be.

As a young kid with then undiagnosed anxiety, I absolutely hated it when “Scooby-Doo” used real monsters because the reason I liked it was because I knew that the monsters were just normal people who would always get caught. I was unable to watch the shows because when I learned that they could use real monsters, it lost the safety for me. So I skipped most of the films, including this one. BUT I’m glad that the writers finally got to keep a story they were excited to use, despite the company, and it’s so nice to hear you talk about it so fondly, especially about villains.😊

Good stuff! I remember when Turner brought HB and a lot of other toons over to TNT with animation blocks and things like the Rudy and GoGo show, sort of a precursor to the full launch of Cartoon Network (a test run?), so I dig the history here. Also, man, that 1993-1995 window was rough for youth entertainment due to the moral panic going on at the time, and I never realized it's what led to SWAT Katz being cut short (makes me think of the old Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon being cut off after two seasons, but that was likely due to Disney buying out ABC). Makes you wonder if it's part of what contributed to the late 90s "let's make things EXTREEEEEME!" movement, since you had kids at that time getting a little older and likely responding to what felt like an overreaction by their parents a few years earlier; I was around 13 years old when Zombie Island came out, and it felt like a lot of other media, both for kids and adults, was trending in that direction around then.

Ah, Scooby Doo on Zombie Island now there's a real blast from the past, this film was a masterpiece in my opinion sure it has it's ups and downs like all movies do but that's what makes it interesting, and to think it's the movie where the Scooby gang encounter real life supernatural entities for the first time, instead of dealing with crooks in masks, sure dealing with actual supernatural entities is stepping out of the gangs comfort zone but still.

I used to love swat kats! And yes I used to watch it everyday as kid. And I do agree that the content felt just a tiny bit more mature than the audience. But the thrill was so damn good! As an adult now I really wish they would bring it back only this time as an adult product. With a little more mature and slightly gory script. I'd say it should come back as a series that would unravel at the end of the season or even beyond that instead of everything happening in a single episode.

When I was younger this movie gave me nightmares, my grandma bought it for me since I liked Scooby Doo so much, but now that I'm am adult, it's my favorite and only one of two things with Scooby Doo that I remember that isn't live action.

I remember being terrified of this movie as a kid. I had to hide my eyes and turn away during the scene where they develop the video of Daphne with the bearded ghost in it, because it would haunt my nightmares. I firmly believe Scooby-Doo, and movies like this, are the reason millenials/gen z became so obsessed with dark media like true crime.

“But guys, why don’t we open Zombie Island to theaters?” “It’s Scooby-Doo, only kids are gonna enjoy it. However, if it were live-action we would definitely put all our chips in.” The irony is that Zombie Island was 300 times the financial and critical success as 2002’s Scooby-Doo.

If Vincent Price’s voice didn’t terrify kids back in the day cat monsters should be alright lol! Also, I can’t help but think if A Pup Named Scooby-Doo hadn’t went a little modern, these awesome Scooby Movies might not have been accepted.

Why is it that producers always underestimate the kids watching the shows. Scooby-Doo, Phineas and Ferb, will they ever learn?

Scooby doo was its best in the 90s and 2000s and while I like Scooby doo mystery inc in CN. I think Scoobydoo franchise is overstaying its welcome just like Spidey in disney xd.
