Shannon was so ahead of every gymnast at this games in terms of overall aesthetic aside from maybe Tatiana Lysenko. Dawes was young here but another one of the all time great beam workers

@@tericaclark4871 love Dawes but she wasn’t on Shannon’s level she was close but not quite there, not overrated at all. Regardless of a wobble i meant overall aesthetic, form, dance and presentation etc. Shannon also had better mental game, that’s food for thought! 😅

Dawes was the first athlete to throw back-handspring into three consecutive layout-step-outs in world or Olympic competition. Lysenko and Miller competed it after her on this day of competition.
@kinsellawasrobbed7515

Only based on the lineup but nice try. All Dawes did was copy Miller. Miller trained a full in, Dawes trained a full in. Miller did 3 layouts, Dawes copied her.

@bojohns77

@@kinsellawasrobbed7515 But that's how it works. She would still be the first. Since we are playing this game, Dawes to this day is still one of a handful of athletes to compete 2 back handsprings to full twisting double dismount. We didn't see it consistently done again until Simone ( over twenty years later). And how many are we seeing this quad so far🤔? But we don't really want to talk about copying because then we would have to talk about Shannon trying to keep up with Dominique on floor and failing miserably, double lay out anyone? But both of these athletes are one of the main reasons US gymnastics has gotten to where it is. Without those two together pushing one another (because no one else in the US could keep pace with them), we would never have gotten to where we are. We definitely would not have won that gold in 96. So let's stop the one copied the other bull.

I began watching gymnastics in 1996,so my question is: all SIX team members competed on each event during team final? It's been quite a surprise for me to watch. In Atlanta the competition was 7-6-5 (7 team members, 6 gymnasts for apparatus, 5 scores to count). I never found detailed scores of Barcelona team final, so I would really appreciate if someone may explain how it worked that time. 🙏
@mikeg8375
@mikeg8375 Год назад
In 1992 the teams were made of 6 gymnasts, all 6 performed all the events, 5 scores counted on each event. So it was 6-6-5. This was changed to 7-6-5 after the 1992 Olympics. After 1996 it became 6-5-4 and it has continued to evolve since then.

@Barbara P. you are most welcome. It's always nice to find other fans of the sport and the Olympics on RU-vid. I just wish it was as much of an experience these days watching Olympic Gymnastics on TV... in 1996 the entire Gymnastics competition was shown on tape delay, but without the internet in everyone's hand, the results were not known to fans as they watched in prime time. Fast forward to today and watching in prime time without already knowing the result is almost impossible and it has taken away from the authenticity of the experience. It's just not the same. I try to catch some of the coverage live on streaming online but with being a working person this is a challenge due to the time change. "Plausibly live" is not a thing anymore. I am hoping that the 2028 Los Angeles Games might allow for some live prime time coverage. It would be nice to recreate the magic of the 1996 games for the fans.

Truly heartbreaking to see Kim Zmeskal fall off the beam and trying so hard to bounce back after to make the top spots to no avail.
@ferdyspears
@ferdyspears 10 месяцев назад
Odd comment. She did make the All-around. Barcelona still had the 3 per country rule, and she did advance despite the fall in compulsory. In the all-around, she faced heavy competition from some of the all-time greats and couldn't get it done. The many small errors she made in the all-around kept her from medaling.
@rolandgreen7484
@rolandgreen7484 4 месяца назад
@@ferdyspears Particularly with her decreased difficulty on floor (due to injury) she would have had to have a picture perfect competition on all 4 events just to edge out MIlosovici for the bronze. As it was she got a 9.937 on vault and 9.9 on bars, both where she hit. Her best beam score of the whole Games was 9.912, and best floor score of the whole Games was 9.925. That totals 38.674, and still falls short of the bronze, and ties Bontas/Boginskaya for about 4th/5th/6th.
