I MEAN NO OFFENSE to anyone who currently owns this car, so please don't be offended. My rant and wrath is not directed at you in any way, shape or form, in fact I actually feel sorry for you, cos you've been cheated. Resoundingly...
No, my anger at this Saga LMST is 100% directed at those responsible for coming out with this monstrosity, and daring to call it a 'car'. Worse than that, they actually made people pay for it with their hard-earned money. Let's put it this way, I would not want this car if it was given to me FOC.
This car is a prime example of why some people have NEVER forgiven Proton, or forgotten the automotive atrocities they've committed in the past, and it's just ONE in a long line of cars that pooped-out (not a typo) from our first national carmaker during the 'dark ages'.
Cars slapped together over a lunch break with the cheapest possible components that were supplied by the lowest possible bidder. Cars that were made with zero quality control and no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Cars made just to turn a profit, and nothing else. Consumer be dammed! This car absolutely reeks of all that.
Granted, they were relatively inexpensive to buy new, but that is still NO EXCUSE for the level of "cheapness" the cars were infused with, because it IS POSSIBLE to make a cheap car not look, and more importantly 'feel' cheap*, IF you care enough to only try. Basically, those responsible for this car didn't give a sh1t, AT ALL.
(*Example, the VW Beetle was a cheap car, a "people's car", for the masses, they were lovely and didn't look or feel cheap, point of fact, they still don't!)
In all honesty, Clarkson should have destroyed this car with a sledgehammer in front of a Proton dealership in the UK, instead of a Perodua Kelisa, ( • Video ), which was a much better car than this pile of crap. Yes, I know the Saga LMST was not offered for sale in the UK, and it's no surprise why, who would want it? Rhetorical question. Instead, Proton pawned it off to us Malaysians, a big, shiny, turd.
In parting, I just wanna reiterate, no offense intended to anyone, this is just my personal view of the Saga LMST (even the earlier Saga LMSS is a much better car), which should never have been offered for sale to the public. My anger rose again when I managed to drive this car after a very long time. I was reminded how much I hated it when it was new, and I realised I hate it even more now.
It's the most atrocious car from Proton, ever. Let's hope with Geely in the picture this kind of utter rubbish NEVER happens again. We Malaysians love our cars, so to Proton Holdings Berhad, give us something to love. You're on the right track now, PLEASE keep it that way, and may you never foist this kind of rubbish on us ever again.

Dear Chris, I m owning this car for three years now. I got it from a person tht took good care of it. Purchased at rm7k (13 years old car) the interior he did took good care of it. I just spend another rm3k plus. I traveled 30k kilometers. Bring it to Mossy Forest , cameron highland, maran temple, penang, The only downside for me is fuel consumption but now petrol cost below rm2 per litre. Oh yes, the old owner did convert to automatic transmission. All you need is , sound proofing the door and the hood. My case, I change few parts, the water pump, timing belt, tinted it, bluetooth single din head unit, wrap seat, sound proofing door n hood, front speakers. This is nice car I own man. Hopefully I wanted to used it for another 10years let see.

As a mechanic, i hear lots complaining about this car, but from my opinion from having lots of proton cars before including this one, i dont have much to complain about mine. It was cheap, reliable and fairly easy to maintain and it was actually the car that i first practiced in and the reason why i love manual cars... I get that it was ugly and feels cheap and plastic but it was cheap and reliable, dont remember it ever giving problem or breaking down... I actually enjoyed this car, yes the powertrain was good.... My father eventually got a mitsubishi triton and gave this to my grandfather who used it for a few more years and only sold it for an automatic axia and when he sold it it was still good and reliable as it was.... Just my humble opinion as a mechanic who has used a handfull of proton cars before.....

Ye betul tu boss. Kereta pertama saya belajar bawa saga lmst 2004 exzos garang.

Dah 5 tahun pakai. Enjin Dan transmisi smooth kaw2 tak ada masalah. But I totally agree with this video. Proton used cheap materials for this car.The build quality is sakai especially on the interior. The air conditioning is crap. All the buttons feel cheap. The fabric is so easy to worn out. The top side of the dashboard cracked just because my car was parked under the hot sun. The aircond vents destroyed long ago and now it just looks like 4 giant holes. The passenger door jammed. And while driving, I can hear like a loose screws sound all around me. Now I don't drive it anymore for one year because I bought a new saga vvt. My advise: if you're currently dating someone, please don't buy this car. It is an embarrassment 😂

My father bought one new back in 06 and even I can tell he regretted buying it. Exterior panel so thin even accidentally leaning on it can cause dents, dashboard cracks easily, glovebox so small it’s practically useless, interior door handle broken so many times I’ve lost count, temperature gauge can’t decide whether the car is cold or overheating and etc. Even his 01 kancil is more reliable than this and the kancil have done over 230k mileage and the dashboard is still in one piece. Finally sold it back in 2018 and traded for a used Saga FLX manual

@dvnn_97

Honestly yes, it’s really badly made. It was the first car my mom ever owned and it already started giving us problems after rolling out of the showroom in 2004. Central locking didn’t work properly so the driver door would get jammed, windows wouldn’t wind up, rattling plastic everywhere and the seats faded after 3 years of ownership. And weirdly if we turned the Ac fan speed to no.2, the ac just shuts off on its own. We made complaints to Proton as it was still under warranty at that time, but the only answer we got back was “ If you don’t like our cars, who ask you to buy?”. So yeah first and last proton we ever owned. Oh and also the boot turns into a swamp every time it rains because of the badly fitted taillights. Yes, the spoiler, side skirts and a huge exhaust came with the car from the factory. We had the 1.3 model which if not wrong cost about 43k.
@ChrisWeevilGarage
@ChrisWeevilGarage 3 года назад

Hey Chris, nice and informative content! Didn't know that LSMTs interior were made these way. Back when I was in school and LMSTs were in production, it was like a dream for us school boys to own one. They came with some noisy muffler like sounding exhaust and cool looking blue backlit speedometer much like Satria Neo. Once, my friend rammed his Persona Elegance into a LMST's rear as he was too close and could not apply brake on time guess what, his Persona was quite badly damaged. Apparenty, the LMST's rear bumper only suffered minor scratches and bumper clip snapped but no severe damage. Back then we felt like despite cheaply built the car exterior had certain rigidity.
@ChrisWeevilGarage
@ChrisWeevilGarage 3 года назад
Thanks for the feedback bud, much appreciated. Btw, in a fender-bender the car at the back will always come-off worse for wear, due to crumple zones and more expensive components up front than the rear. The LMST had a very boomy exhaust fitted stock, that's why ppl nicknamed it Keta Kebal I reckon, cos it was that loud...

2 of my colleagues had LMSTs since new, and to be frank they bought it because they've needed the space but had a limited budget. I remember sitting in 1 when it was barely a week old to lunch and immediately felt another colleague's (mechanically twin) 97 Iswara 1.3 Aeroback a class better in terms of fit and finish (that rear boot spoiler had gaps as wide as 1 thumb), materials (interior plastic panel quality was too thin, easily scratched and really hollow), NVH (that fartbox exhaust was louder than predecessor 'Brother's' LMSS). My other colleague's car was traded in last year for a new Persona and by then the dashboard had cracked, the door cards rubbery finish had turned sticky and discoloured, and before selling it off kept reminding us not to wind down the rear windows coz the plastic winder would snap very easily. Really the older LMSS was much better, and those that gave it the final approval should have been hanged.

@@zulfadhlizainol6678 Not even perception, Hondas and Toyotas are renowned world over for their quality and reliability in the mainstream/compact category. If you are sinking RM80k into a car, it damn well better be a Honda/Toyota not Proton/Perodua (price not even a trivial figure when converted here to Aus dollars). In the era of the LMST, hell even the Iswara, they were essentially selling a 1980s car to 2000s customers which is simply unacceptable. In a free market, one without high protectionist tariffs, nobody would’ve bought those crappy cars, so I agree with you that Proton cannot hide behind the “unpatriotic” as really they are thinking Malaysians are stupid enough to believe that they put a world class product out (nobody fell for that). I agree that Malaysian cars have come along way, noted when I visited Malaysia a while back and rented a Bezza. That said there are still things to improve on, the small capacity engines still can feel underpowered, the doors still feel a bit flimsy and the local cars haven’t reached international standards where ESC is a non-negotiable mandatory feature and standard side and curtain airbags have been the norm for over a decade, especially given the road toll and heavy rain in Malaysia - Malaysians deserve safer vehicles! Again the Msian Govt wants revenue and isn’t gonna scrap the lucrative tariff program but if anyone wanted to test if Proton/Perodua were good cars, all that has to be done is to sell imported cars at the price they should be selling at, rather than an over inflated one. I reckon people will go for the step up in quality and Proton would have to be more competitive to compete, or at least remain to serve the baseline Saga/Bezza market. That’s what happened here in Australia with GM Holden, when they thought they could pull the wool over Australian’s eyes by importing cheaply built rebadged Daewoos, the markets flocked to Toyota/Mazda (Mazda is the runner up Japanese car brand here, while I take it that it’s still Honda in Msia) and the brand has been in decline for a decade and General Motors exited the country last year. I wish Proton keeps making their own cars and not rebadging. Their rebadge jobs are my least favourite (like the 2008 Accord called Perdana) while I appreciate the style of the Waja, Persona, Preve, Iriz, new Saga, etc.

As a owner of the LMST, TOTALY AGREED with every points stated in the video. The noices are constantly coming out from the dahsboards, the air conditioner control dash in mine is total long long time ago, SHitest power window button position. Not to mentioned the feeling of insecure when driving in fast speed, it just feel like the car would gone to pices in any second!! Aside from the cheap quality of body and interior, the powertrain are suprisingly satisfied my daily drive needs. Good throttle response, Good transmission feedback. Anyway, i would still recommend who those doesn't have much in their pocket to use this car as the leverage before they could affort a better car, especially a fresh graduate like myself. P.S: Thx to Mitsubishi and the lightweight, LMST is very fun to drive and fast (If you can conquer the fact that it might just gone "transformer" when crusing on about 160km/s)

And the fact that this is suppose to be Saga (and remove the Iswara name) and it last 5 model years surprises me. It makes the Saga BLM looks like a Corolla. But for a car with no airbag and selling it for RM30k-50k really hits the nail in the coffin on why Proton had a bad reputation, while Myvi sells like hotcakes. The LMST looks like it doesn't deserve to have both Proton and Saga badge. At the very least for 80s based car in 2000s, it should have some decent features and standards in quality at the price of entry-level car. It also reminds me of Chery Alado Amulet/A13, which i saw a number of it in Langkawi in 2007. Both 80s with 2000s cosmetics. Being born in 2000, i've never thought of Proton sedan that i like, other than Waja, until 2007 and 2008 with Persona and Saga BLM respectively. This along with hatchbacks Savvy and Satria Neo in 2005 and 2006 respectively. Glad that at the same price in 2020, the current Saga is as good as a decent entry level sedan. Rattling dashboard, cracked meter panel, faulty fuel gauge (Constantly showing full tank and suddenly drops to 1 bar when empty), lousy power window switch, super low suspension (scratches undercarriage in road bumps, 0 NVH, and super cramp rear passanger seats (with my driving position my passengers would need to chop off their thighs and legs). The montrosity of the LMST can also be seen in the Gen 2. Supposedly a family-friendly hatchback, but not really that practical. The Gen 2 doesn't even have a glovebox either, which makes me feel that these two models must've been designed by a same person. The meter cluster of both models also look very Lotus-ish. Same with the interior panels, e.g. door cards, which are very brittle and prone to crack after several years of usage. Luckily they fixed the issues of the Gen 2 when they launched the first generation Persona.

Yes, the G2 was not much better than this in terms of build quality and interior component materials used. Dude, that point of time by right the C22 chassis is supposed to end of it's service life. The LMSS was supposed to be the final variant of it's kind, but somehow the replacement model (BLM - Base Line Model) doesn't come. Which resulted in this LOTUS touched up of LMST until the all new Saga II(BLM) came and replace it. Some of the noticeable touch up by lotus was the plastic dashboard that you hated the most, and the hard poly door trim that totally LOTUS are there to make sure it has as little component as possible for the car to be break. Not dissing you, I agree 101% on your point of view, they technically haven't thought of what makes a car a car, but somehow they race cared a budget car(a race car literally doesn't have all the normal saloon comfort anyway). But if you really want to dive into the C21 C22 world, the most updated version of it's kind is the LMSS with all the noticeable internal upgrades and maintain all the required car stuff in the cabin. However, the best performance edition of "Iswara aeroback" which will be the SAGA II LMST - Merdeka edition(rusty orange), due to it's exhaust tuning and carburetor touch up, marked 92bhp on paper. It wasn't so bad after all, considering one of the last LMST in 2008(old stock) were selling at 22k. It's a steal bro. A bread toaster with 4 wheels!

Thanks for that walk down memory lane bud, nice one. Yes, I know and hear where you're coming from with the Lotus DNA bits, which is fine, but, and this is a big BUT, it didn't work for this car at all. Firstly and most obviously it's not an Elise, secondly the target market are not Lotus buyers. They needed a daily runabout and likely for their families too. On the flipside, it wasn't sporty enough for the younger generation, despite the boomy exhaust fitted stock. It was neither here nor there, and while it may have looked good on paper, the execution was horrendous. It was horrendous when new, it's even more horrendous now. 22k? I wouldn't have paid half that.

Yup, I had two Wiras, a hatchback and sedan, they were good cars thanks to Mitsubishi, and they had much better interiors than this LMST, but that's not because they were a lot more expensive, since the LMSS before this also had a very decent interior for its price. No, this LMST was a mistake, an utter disgrace that should never have been foisted on the public. Even a rm19k Nissan Sunny 1.3 was much better when new.

I kinda felt that with the BLM/FLX at this point after being in a few more of the recent entry level cars. The Bezza and Myvi included, and also others like the Iriz and Vios. The BLM/FLX in comparison now just felt mediocre. Probably not nearly as bad as the LMST though. It's just the overall build quality is not terrible, but not amazing. The same could be said with Peroduas of the time. I think it's after the early 2010's where both were begining to step up in terms of interior build quality.

The LMST Merdeka edition cost only RM26,999 on the road, the cheapest 1.3 litre manual with power steering. Compare it with the much maligned LMSS with its noisy exhaust which cost around RM33k+. The LMST exhaust is same as in the Iswara. I owned one of this LMST together with an Iswara and I used both cars side by side for a period of time. 1. Compared with Iswara, the LMST plastics are very bad, with the dashboard plastic becoming brittle like glass after some years. The bumper is flimsier than that of Iswara, but then, all cars nowadays come with this kind of bumpers, unlike that of the solid steel bumper of Volvo, Nissan Sunny, Corolla of 4 decades ago. 2. The LMST reverse sensor is superior to that of the Iswara's which is really lousy. 3. The air-conditioner of LMST is actually less capable than that of Iswara (probably due to the smaller compressor?). The Iswara air-conditioning vents plastic louvers are flimsier than LMST, and changing them is a nightmare because the screws are inside the dashboard. 4. The power window and central locking actuators are about the same quality of Iswara's. I had problems with the power window switches in both Iswara and LMST. 5. The rear lights of LMST are better than the Iswara which will disintegrate with time, especially the 3rd brake light and the licence plate lights. The front turn lights are integrated with the headlamps and are better than the Iswara's which will lose its stick-on cover after some time. 6. The Iswara's instrument meters (speedo, rpm, temperature/fuel) are known for the poor soldering circuitry, and the odometer plastic gears will slip on the shaft and stop turning. The electronic displays and the dials so far works well in the LMST. 7. It's true in the video that the LMST side mirrors does not stay put but springs back after adjustment. 8. The brake is firmer in the Iswara, kind of soft in LMST. 9. The sound proofing is better in the Iswara. The door of LMST sounds clunky and the lock/unlock knob rattle in its hole. 10. LMST has power steering and the lock-to-lock turns of the steering wheel is less than in the Iswara. The engine gearbox etc are identical. By the way the spoiler, skirting and window visor are original. LMST came in two colours, black and orange.

But sadly, after 10 years the interior trim starts to fall apart, the paint went faded, the overall condition of the car really horrible. The Savvy is a hot-hatch, whatever Lotus DNA went in would work, it doesn't work for a family car like this. And I already did mention the Savvy also has a very plasticky interior too, but it's nowhere near as badly put together as is. At least the Savvy is TUV certified, this LMST has no redeeming qualities at all, save for the powertrain.

I can't agree more that this cars interior is awful. They should have just left the original Iswara interior alone. However on the subject of build and material quality, I think it should be tied into how much a car costs. For example, the Axia interior is nice for a 30-40k car, but it would be disappointing in a 100k B segment sedan. A current example of this would be the Honda CRV. It's a nice design but the quality does not fit the asking price. A lot of the interior bits are great for a 95k City but not in a 160k car. I once saw a showroom car where the leather was more deformed from being sat on than my ancient 2003 E39 with 305k km on the clock. And I'm quite heavy. And before all the Honda fans lynch me, I'm not singling this car out. I'm just using it as an example. There are many more disappointments out there...
@ChrisWeevilGarage
@ChrisWeevilGarage 3 года назад
Yes of course the more expensive the car, the better its interior, that's a given, but there are ways to make the interior of a cheap car not look and feel cheap like this. Take the Nissan Sunny for example, rm19k when brand new, but its interior didn't look or feel cheap, at all. And that same interior has survived decades.
