This video is a tutorial on how to throw a two piece altered oval pot from a thrown wall and thrown disk. I put throwing rings in the disk for more visual interest!
When leatherhard, I demo attaching the two pieces together and cleaning the joint. I admit, I should have joined it earlier, but time got away from me!
I happen to be using Standard 225 stoneware (cone 6) for this demo- as that is the clay my students use on the wheel.
For the great tools I used in the video check out this link to a live searchable (control F) Googledoc I continually update with lots of my favorite tools on Amazon using my associate links! docs.google.com/document/d/1X...
I made this video for my Ceramics II, II, and independent studyI students at Mason High School.
I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 32 years, over the past 25 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
I started my RU-vid channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!
Please subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes! Follow me on all social medias under KaransPotsAndGlass!

Great idea! And how would you do a lid?

I normally make the lid something like the base, but just a little over the edge, then I would put a flange on the interior- probably a thrown flange- that fits within the piece.

When you're stretching the bottom slab into an oval, does the original width/diameter narrow at all as you elongate it? Or does it tend to hold the same width? Wondering if I should throw it any wider than the wall to account for that. Hope my question makes sense, thank you!!

That's a great question!!! I would say generally, it stays about the same width. I usually make it a smidge larger and trim away the excess, so when I do that it doesn't truly matter!!
