This video is a demonstration of making a large strawberry planter - or a multi-hole pot for succulents or flowers thrown from multiple balls of clay adding to 21 lbs on the potter’s wheel. I am throwing softer clay to prevent further injury to my rotator cuff!
I happen to be using Standard 225 stoneware (cone 6) for this demo- as that is the clay my students use on the wheel.

I made this video for my Ceramics III, and independent study students at Mason High School (and all my viewers interested in learning more about clay!). I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 35 years, and I have been teaching for over 33 years, over the past 27 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics.
I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
I started my RU-vid channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!

Lol- definitely difficult at times!! I always tell my kids- it's something to work toward even if they aren't quite there! When they realize they aren't using intention, it often helps them to understand how to focus toward it!!

Hello also wondering if you or anyone could give me some advice on a wheel. I’m looking to buy a new one but not sure what brand to buy. If anyone could help or suggest some so I can do some research on them I’d appreciate it

I don't know it this one would help you, but I go over centering and coning a bit more extensively in this one! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tt_h1QEfg68.html

That is a LOT of clay and you handled it so easily. I am curious why you didn't do a some sort of foot or at least indent the bottom to prevent it from rocking.

I don’t ever really put footrings on my planters, I leave their bases flat, sometimes carve a little notch in the bottom for an area for it to drain away from the hole if it doesn’t sit on a catch plate. I’ve never had a problem with them not being flat! The weight of that one in particular would flatten it out during firing if it had a little bow to it!
