Throwing and trimming a wide, flat pasta bowl on the pottery wheel. I hope this is helpful to anyone who is starting out or who needs a hand getting their bowls nice and wide.

Couple things I love in your process. 1) You have the 'heavy lifting' done before you pull. You center, open, compress all before the first pull. You don't have to do more than 2 or 3 pulls because all is prepared. 2) You compress the bottom in setting the final inside shape. 3) You wait until leather hard to trim. So many people trim too early. 4) You get the inside 'pretty' while throwing, the outside while trimming. Great process!🙂

Thank you! I struggled with pasta bowls for ages as I tried to lift too much up at once and doing too much to the outside. Glad you enjoyed!

Beautifully thrown. You mentioned the freckles were in the clay? Can you explain that? I am a new potter and could use some glazing tips. Thanks for the great video!
@MaeCeramics
@MaeCeramics 2 года назад
Sure! The clay has little bits of iron or magnesium in it and they turn into black flecks when fired. They bloom through the glazes, it’s so lovely. If you want a spotty glaze you could try adding iron spangles (you can buy them, literally called iron spangles. Different to iron oxide). You can also add them directly to your clay. Also can add sand if you’re near a black sanded beach.

This was such a great tutorial for a shallow bowl! I saw you answered a question about the width of the bowl once throw (so thank you!), but wondering about how wide you opened to at the 6:00 minute before you start with the walls?
@MaeCeramics
@MaeCeramics 2 года назад
Hmmm it’s so hard to say, I don’t measure that. I think it’s prob around 15 cm but it’s hard to say - it is kind of a feeling! Some people find it easier to throw it wider to start with, have a play and see what works for you :)

Hi Mae I was watching your hands and realized that you use both hands to trim with? I am left handed and was taught to throw right handed which works ok but when I trim I find it difficult to do the walls of the pot and saw that you trim the rim with your left hand then the walls with your right hand? I have tried having the wheel turn clockwise and trim with my left hand but invariably my brain gets confused… did you train your brain to use both hands? Any tips? Love your work and explanations are top! Thanks

Hi Carole, I used around 1.2kg for this if I remember correctly. For something that big I'd probably use around 2kg. I would start around there and add or remove clay depending on how it goes. Good luck!

hey could you explain why pottery is not dishwasher safe and u make a very sartisfying work i appreciate it.
@MaeCeramics
@MaeCeramics 2 года назад
Sure, generally high fired pottery is actually dishwasher safe, my work is. In saying that though, a dishwasher is a really harsh environment for handmade pieces - it gets really hot really quickly which can cause thermal shock, as well as using harsh chemicals which can damage the glaze. Hand washing is generally safer for the longevity of pieces. Hope that helps!

I'm a lefty, too. When you are trimming, do you have the wheel going clockwise?
@MaeCeramics
@MaeCeramics 3 года назад
No - I learnt with a wheel that would only go anticlockwise and I can't unlearn it! I just use both hands for trimming. You'll see I switch hands - I use the long loop tool with my left hand and the smaller one with my right. You could try switching the wheel direction of course, but if you're anything like me you'll be a little bit ambidextrous anyway!

@hayliehuynh530
@hayliehuynh530 2 года назад
I noticed that you're left handed and you tend to work more close to your body at 5-6 o'clock, with the direction your wheel is spinning you wouldn't be able to work on the left, but if you change the direction it spins you might find it easier (if your wheel can, the wheels I've used before could), it might take a while to get used to but it's probably better.
@MaeCeramics
@MaeCeramics 2 года назад
Hey! When I learnt the wheel couldn’t switch, so I got used to it that way, and now it’s been so long that when I switch it to go the other way I can’t do it 😂 it’s like potting with my feet, it feels crazy. Now that I’ve made this work for me it works fine, it just took a tiny bit longer to learn

Thanks for an awesome video! I love it! I made some pasta bowls yesterday and struggled to get them off the bats today (I wired them before taking them off the wheel). Just wondering if this is likely due to them not being dry enough? Haven’t had this issue with plates- but thinking the reclaim I used was quite soft and possibly needed more drying time.
@MaeCeramics
@MaeCeramics 2 года назад
I often wire through the next day as well. The clay on the bat just takes ages to dry compared to the clay on the rim. I wire when throwing, then next day wire again, put a bat on the rim, flip the whole thing over and gently twist the bat off the base. Then let the base dry for a while before trimming. Hope that helps!
