Cool video. I, too, have wondered about the limit, so it's nice to know that there isn't one . . . but that makes me wonder why some guys NEVER throw balls to fans. I guess they're just kinda mean/rude.

There should be a limit on how many balls you get.

I once saw Starling Marte, after he had caught a fly ball, go over to the stands, call for a very young child to come over to him. He gave the child a ball and then stood with him so his parents could get a picture of them together. He didn't have to do that and he held up the game to do it, but I think it helps MLB when players do things like this.

In the early 80's the Mets were owned by a family that didn't really have the operating capitol needed to run a major league team. The players got in trouble for throwing balls into the stands and the owner lady kept asking why the balls thrown out of play for hitting the dirt couldn't be washed and reused.

Matt, great advice. I get to several Marlins games every year with a pal, and we do surprisingly well, probably 70% success rate. Being old guys, we avoid sitting near kids, and also pretty girls, to increase our chances, a great sacrifice. Always fun to get that souvenir ball!

Pitcher Jose Lima R.I.P used to get a paper bag full of ball and walk around the warning track of the entire field tossing balls to fans before every game in Houston when he was an Astro. A real fan favorite. I don't know if he continued that later as a Dodger.

That is a good tip. You'll get good results by speaking Spanish to Latin ball players. If you know Japanese or Korean that would probably work well for players from Japan and Korea as well.

I went to an Atlanta Braves (my team) and the reds in cincy. I was the only Braves fan in my area during BP and a ball went to Eddie Perez while he was a coach. Every fan around me was yelling Perez, since that’s all they knew because the jersey. I yelled “Eddie” and he turned and directly threw it to me. I took it as he realized I was the only guy that legitimately knew who he was. My advice treat them like a person not a vending machine.

In the past you could sit behind the dugout and sometimes the player who made the 3rd out would toss the ball over the top of the dugout when the team came off the field. But nowadays all the dugouts have the netting extended over the whole length because of everyone on their phones during the game. :( I actually once saw a player try to flip a ball over the front of the dugout to the fans but he forgot the netting had been recently extended across the dugout and it hit the netting and fell back into the dugout.

A couple years ago at one low-A ball game I was sitting behind the tarp down the 3rd base line when the player warming up the left fielder missed a ball during in-between inning warm up tosses. The ball bounced off the warning track and right up on top of the tarp where i picked it up and gave it my kid. The player looked at me like "bruh, really?" and then he had to ask the dugout for another baseball when I didn't throw it back. Was a little bit of a funny episode.

It’s crazy how far baseball has come with the limits on balls. That’s the entire reason behind the George Brett pine tar incident... tar high up on the bat stained the ball and made them unusable so they made the rule to preserve balls. Obviously outdated by the time Brett hit the homer but an obscure rule that Billy Martin kept in his pocket til the most opportune time lol

There is one fool proof way that will drastically increase your odds of getting a ball tossed to you. It requires two things. Number one... get seats as close to field level as your can. Number 2 - Find a mentally handicapped person (adult or child) to take to the game with you. The more 'challenged' they physically appear, the higher your chances are of getting a ball. I am not saying this to be funny. This is a real tactic. People do this all the time to get closer to professional wrestlers. They will 'borrow' a friend or family members' mentally handicapped associate for an evening to get a ball or handshake from a wrestlers. Sad.

We showed up for batting practice and were some of the very last to leave... we never bothered asking players for balls but I worshiped Bo Jackson... he gave me four bats over the years, two of them broken. Over the years I collected lots of cool items but gave it all away except the bats... oh, and I got a 1989 All Star game signed ball with Bo on the sweet spot... and it has a nice signature of Ronald Reagan on there as well... ill never part with that.

I was a tiny little guy (I was 5'0 101lbs when I graduated HS) and was getting trampled by the other people crowding Bo... he picked me up and put me on his shoulders, piggy back like... I stayed on his shoulders for what seemed like an eternity, I felt like I could touch the heavens.. king of the world.

My brother and I used to go the Visalia Oaks (now Rawhide) batting practice and collect all the home run balls. My dad would use the balls for little league baseball practice. We collected so many baseballs that the GM for the team asked my dad if we could sell him some of the balls back to them for $.50 cents apiece. My brother and I made a few bucks doing it but spent it all back at the baseball games. My brother ended up becoming a bat boy for the team and I worked there for 3-4 years in the concessions stands. Great childhood memories.

This really changed after the 94/95 player strike/owner lock out (whatever you want to call it) When the players came back in 1995, the league encouraged players to throw out balls to gain good will with the fans, even the ball boys and girls will give out balls to the fans. That policy hasn't really changed since then. My advice, know the player's name or nickname, what a fan would refer to them as, especially the visiting team, speak their native language if you know it, and get there early. Most important, be polite and ask nicely. No player is going to throw you a ball if you're being an irritant to them.

@matthewfriske438

Clay Harper I’m not 100% with Bellinger I’m an east coast guy but he’s still young from what I know, if it were say David Ortiz no ones going to give him shit for not hustling and a easy ground ball but for a young athletic kid in his 2nd or 3rd season if he’s not busting his ass on a regular basis I’d say it’s time for a wake up call. In my experience (only played into college didn’t go pro and wasn’t good enough) they don’t tell you your getting benched most of the time they just don’t put you in the lineup and you have to earn your way back in but I only played for 4 different coaches on a competitive level so I’m nkt as well versed especially not at the pro levels

Depends on the player and coach. Usually call him into office and explain what you’re doing and why. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Had a friend that used to play for the Dodgers. Said when they were on the road if they saw a super hot chick in the stands they would write their hotel and room number on a ball and give it to the chick.

I got a high Single A player toss a ball to my 10 y/o granddaughter at the end of an inning as we were sitting on the third base side @ field level. I just called his number and pointed to her as she was sitting right next to me. Pretty cool guy!

I have gotten a practice ball at then Pac Bell back in the early 2000's hit by Chipper Jones. I had it fished out of McCovey Cove and he signed it in the 9th after it dried off. Still have the ball today.

Thanks for answering this. It's such funny timing. Having come across your channel and watching obsessively now I was going to post a question about this exact topic. I was at the Nationals-Diamondback game this weekend and was wondering if players had any limits on throwing balls into the stands. I didn't assume they were charged for any that they did, but did wonder. At Nationals Park, my son likes to stand above the bull pen and when pitchers finish up pre-game warm-ups (or even relievers if they are being called in right away - or the guy on the mound made it through the half-inning without having to have the guy warming up to go in - they will often toss a ball up to fans.

I’m 50 and never got a ball at any level games. Joaquín Andújar flip me a ball 3 times, and I dropped all 3 attempts. He gave up, I guess I was too excited to have one in my hands. I still got time, maybe someday. Thanks for the videos Antonelli.

When I was a kid my friends and I would hang outside c.s.u.l.b. practice. Collect half a dozen or so before going home. After every ball comes over we dash to pick it up and nonchalantly stroll away. Eventually a guy comes running out and give us the evil eye. I don't know if homie was getting them for himself or what. Because us kids were not giving up our ball hustle. It didn't help he was overweight and to get outside Blair field is quite a jog if you're not fit. Those things are expensive to a 12 yr. old kid. We were pretty cool though showing up to play pick up ball with a dozen brand new balls.

My brother ran the scoreboard at Lecom Park in Bradenton, Fl., and he used to walk the park, 3 laps, and pick up all the balls from early batting practice and hand those out to kids coming in for the games. He was a pitcher in the 60’s, but never made the majors.

I researched and found that in MLB they use up to $500 worth of baseballs/game. Baseballs that don't get into the hands of the fans are generally saved and used for batting practice.

I’m a bat boy for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (Dodgers Advanced A) and the players don’t have a limit but our clubbie tells us to not to get generous with the scuff balls because we need to re use them for BP. Every game I discreetly give away probably three or four a game

A couple weeks ago Astros vs Indians in Cleveland Yule Gurriel tried to throw me I would say from the 5th inning all the way to the 14th. This guy stole all of them for me and in the 12th this guy literally pushes me onto the field and I still caught it! Security comes over and I tell him this guy pushed me and he got ejected. I was laughing my face off and security told him he shouldn’t be pushing little kids onto the field. It was amazing

I was just sitting at the game waiting for it to start and somebody came out and threw a ball to me. I have it sitting on a desk in my room; its only purpose is going to be for pitching. ;) The game i went to was awesome!! Mostly because i recorded a pitcher close up in different angles in slow-motion.

I've gotten some over the years. I always yell "thank you" after and the players have tipped their caps. I miss going to the park.
