hi Jon, love your videos bro.. to help with the warping issues we deal with. in stead of throwing the plate, bowl or platter with a flat bottom.. try putting a low spot in the center and have a slight rise toward the rim.. the heating of the kiln puts a upward stress on the wares and the cooling it pulls back down.. the curve will keep the movement lower than that of a flat piece...i struggled with warping until a older potter told me that, now i rarely throw anything with a flat bottom. warped pieces filled my flower beds LOL.. keep up the great work...

clay shrinks as it drys, so the plates will free themselves of the bat at a stiff leather hard stage.

There is a hand position to recenter a vessel on the wheel which has to be done before you cut it off the bat.

Hi Jon. I haven't thrown many plates. How do I get the rims on plates the same size so that they stack? Obviously you are experienced so you can gauge it without using a tool or whatever, but I was just wondering if you are new to throwing plates how that would be done?
@Floreypottery
@Floreypottery 5 лет назад
Pam tenKrooden you can add a lump of clay onto your wheels work bench or drains pan sit a stick in clay toward your rim as a gauge helps get you close so their the same. once you throw a few you’ll get use to the same shape over and over

Hi Jon, i live on a well and septic system. Do you have any recomendations for me and draining my clay water. I dont think putting all that clay into my septic firld is a good idea?
@danbance5799
@danbance5799 5 лет назад
I dump my water on the grass, but there are a lot of sink trap options available. Dumping clay water down the drain is a bad idea as it can settle in your pipes and clog them. The septic system is the least of your worries. As I mentioned, there are lots of sink trap options - search for "clay sink trap". At the very least, do your cleanup in a bucket of water. Let the clay settle for a day or two, then gently pour off the water.
@Floreypottery
@Floreypottery 5 лет назад
You can build you own sink traps via buckets or plastic tubs check some out on RU-vid you don’t want any clay in your drain field it clogs stuff up
@Jonthepotter
@Jonthepotter 5 лет назад
We were required to put in a separate holding tank for our studio as out septic is very temperamental , but yes a good sink trap option is the best way to go....or just dump it outside.

I love your plate video, but one giant step is missing!!! You are not the type to keep a secret step out of the equation, I think you just don’t realize that some of us need to know EVERYTHING☺️so my question is....when do you cut the plate off the batt? I don’t see you actually cutting off the plate from the bat .... but if you let it dry too long it is super hard to cut off or if you wait until it comes off on its own it’s too hard to trim! Which leads me to another question ... do you trim your plates? Have you ever shown that? I would love to see the process of a plate from start to finish. Thank you for making videos so well you really have raised the bar , I’ve noticed a difference in other people’s videos since you’ve been on the scene, I really appreciate the fact that you take pride in your videos you edit them and you make them fun and interesting . I don’t feel like a captive audience ! You are both informative and interesting and fun to watch and I appreciate you and your family, congratulations on your newest addition! Thank you again, Jodi

@AlyGuez

@Jonthepotter
@Jonthepotter 5 лет назад
Large dinner plates are probably the hardest and most time consuming form due to the amount of time you need to let them dry. The space they take up in the kiln and the high percentage of breakage and loss in the process makes them one of the most expensive things I will make.
@Jonthepotter
@Jonthepotter 5 лет назад
I don't do them very often because of the expense that I have to charge, but I will in special cases.

@Floreypottery

Time and loss factor and you have to always make extra because many break or warp during drying or glaze mishaps If I make for plates I make an extra 4 as back up
