Around the early 90's in Orange County, California, I used to watch a local music video show called "Request Video." The host at that time was the way cool, funny, and lovely, Gia DeSantis. I will never forget the time they played my request, this one. Gia announced the band and title, followed by "for Adam in Huntington Beach. " She then smiled at the camera as if to say: This guy has amazing taste.

This is why I love digging through music! I've never heard this song before and have never heard of this band. 20 seconds into the song they got my full attention. I was thinking ok.. let it play out and see if the song drops off somewhere. It never did! This is a classic track and the video fits the song so well. 🎵

I can relate - watching MTV, waiting for something halfway decent to come on - I finally resorted to recording 120 minutes every Sunday night on VCR, and then going through it the next day and offloading the songs I liked on to a second VCR… Still have the tapes… And yes, there are some Throwing Muses on there!❤️🎸👍☮️

Hey great to know I wasn't the only person on Earth doing this in the 1990s. I'm from the UK and used to hope some great indie tracks would appear. Occasionally you'd get a gem but that would often involve sitting through dire commercial muzak . On the subject of The Muses I consider University as the best American album of the 1990s with The Breeders Last Splash a close second

Suddenly, Led Z's D'yer Mak'er popped up. Their vid features the portrait of a certain John Bonham, whose drum fills must've rung in the head of the producer of Counting. Remembering I had the CD single of this song. Early nineties Alternative. Lovely little era of music. So many bands putting out some amazing, original music. It's crazy how after this and if you count Electronica later in the decade, there really hasn't been another musical genre/movement created since then. Maybe it speaks of the staleness of modern music.
@JakeRBludclart
@JakeRBludclart 7 лет назад
Alex Castillo staleness is a polite way of putting it friend :) real shame anything like 90' altern hasn't been seen for years. On the plus side because bands were signed, made an album and dropped from the label back then, there's soooo many hidden gems to find. Won't be the same again

While I am of your age and so I share your gut feeling, the truth is there is a lot of great music being created every year, if you put the effort into looking for it. It's not as easy as turning on the radio nowadays. But it is there. It is a hobby of mine and I can guarantee that there is great music, and even new music genres, being created every day. Humbly I ask you not to turn off your brain or your hope.

I was 21yo when this album came out, found them on MTV's 120 Minutes (the only things MTV was ever good for). That Summer I was rooming with friends on the Jersey Shore (no, not THAT one) in Sea Isle City and working about 50 minutes away and I had a Ninja motorcycle. When I would get done work late on Saturday night and ride the Ninja to our apartment I would have a Walkman playing certain tapes for the ride and The Real Ramona was one of them. I felt like I was safe while riding and listening to good music and always felt like this was good album to listen to for Shore music for surfing and riding along the coast. This album is so good and so underappreciated. So glad I got to enjoy it and can still do so to this day. Thanks, Throwing Muses.

It must have been in early 91, around February, the sole time I ever had the chance to see them together. I have a DVD of TM live from that very tour, shot in Germany (complete with the customary lifeless crowd).
