I recently switched to standing while throwing due to a sacral torsion and hip misalignment, and I found that it is SO much easier to center! It's so much easier to control the clay, especially when I'm no longer floating around the chair :)
Oh my goodness! I can't believe I never noticed this but I love that your water bucket and tools are all on a little rolling cart!!! I need this in my life!!! I'm always losing my tools under the splash pan.
A good slip resistant impact mat to stand on is essential. I don't stand but I do sit on a bar stool with a swivel seat and raised wheel... saves on the knees.
When I first started throwing standing up, I kept my foot on the pedal. Felt fine all day. Next day I had back pain from standing on one leg all day! Had to rest for two or three days! Now, I keep the pedal beside the wheel instead of on the floor and control it with my hand. Felt strange at first but presents not problems now. Wish I had a sit down wheel as well.
I have that same wheel but neglected to get the leg extensions. Certainly rethinking that lately. Thanks for this and all your videos! And a pox the cretin who gave this a dislike, which is cancelled out by my thumbs up.
Cool! Thank you for the information!) It would be interesting to know about your work staff, your work equipment, photo and video devices, computer programs, etc. =)
This video had perfect timing. Today I just couldn't pull up my walls enough for a tall piece. What would you recommend for a sturdy stand? I've switched from sitting to standing and my knee & back pain has gone. I do find myself throwing from the side of the wheel idky😂
If you’re not using your Brent wheel In the basement of mocha monkey, I’d love to buy it from you if it’s in working condition still! 😁 I am a small baby potter and live in Saint Paul. I’ll come all the way to you! 😁
Thank you I can't help but notice that your music on videos now have has been influenced heavily by Matthew Kelly. I also noticed that some of his videos have music that is very similar to what you used to have. It is good to watch you both learn from each other
Yes! Plus, your body weight resists the motion of the clay better than someone who is lighter. A 47 year old mom who doesn't work out may not have the same perspective on throwing 15 lbs without bracing an elbow (or 2). I do stand to throw anything over 8 inches tall. It does help, but I have to brace my elbow in my hip.
I think for guys it's easier because they're stronger. Or basically good for people who are fairly strong. I need to brace my arm against my abdomen to center larger pieces.
Tip on the video and I hope I don’t sound like a jerk because it’s not the intent. But if you’re trying to show how to do something great but don’t speed the video up and try to talk through it. I skipped your other parts of the video to see that and it’s like 20 seconds give or take. Most people I assume (could be wrong) watch to learn how to throw etc and expand skills. But if your doing a throwing video or skills etc make it about that, leave the studio stuff etc out. Then make a video about studio stuff if people want to do that. Like I said I skipped 90% of your video, just to kinda see the difference and you Speed it up and didn’t even talk through it etc.
