What a break through!!! I honestly was so frustrated with my son. He kept getting frustrated and then started the "I can't" sentences. He's 6'03/300lbs and just started throwing. 16yrs. However he got frustrated really fast when it came to pivots. We have watched several videos but these ones hit his issue on the nose. "Overactive top half"!! I'm so excited for him to watch these and start implementing right away. Thank u so much!! Looking fwd to future videos.

Throwing Smarter Throwing my son just attended his first meet he threw 121 feet 13 yr old, our school only has thd rubber discus, should I invest in another type to help increase distance? Thanks
@ThrowingSmarterThrowingFarther
That's a great throw for his age and a first meet! Short answer is yes. The rubber discus has the most of the weight in the center so it is easy to spin for beginning throwers however once you start throwing distances where your son is at having a disc with a metal rim (or some of the other more exotic materials they have now) will help the discus spin faster and that translates into farther throws. Since he is already over 120 feet my guess is he will add distance fairly quickly as he continues to get stronger and gain experience. Look for a disc with a rim weight of ~75% which should be good until he starts hitting around 160 feet then you can step up to 80-85%.

I'm in eighth grade I've been doing discus a little under a year, when I bought my discus last year my PB (or PR) was 13M and now it's 29M and I'm trying to hit 30M, thanks to you and other youtube channels I will probably hit my goal in a month or so, so keep on uploading these tutorials because theres always room for improvement.
@ThrowingSmarterThrowingFarther
Great to hear Brandon! If you follow the system you'll be able to hit 30m and much further. We actually just posted a video on out site of a young lady that went from 136' to 173' after using the system. www.throwingsmarterthrowingfarther.com/single-post/2017/04/03/KB-high-school-PR-136-new-PR-173-The-system-works

How do you throw the discus? do you do it like the one in the video? If so, does it work better for you than just a standing throw? I'm trying to figure out If I should try because I'm getting about 31m and I'm trying to get at least 38m by the end of the year ( Eighth grade also)

hello my name is Olivia. I am in high school I have never really had a discus coach I power throw and I am unable to learn a good spin technique. 81 ft may not seem much to what your used to. any suggestions what I could possibly do? Im clumsy when I get nervous. I can. throw flat and comes off my finger great but need a better technique. in order to beat my goal
@ThrowingSmarterThrowingFarther
Hi Olivia, overcoming nerves is a challenge all throwers at all levels face. The good news is that it is a skill you can develop. A good way to work on that is doing "meet simulations" during practice where you designate 6 throws in a row just as you would have in a meet. No fouling, measure them etc. The more people that participate the better. As far as your distance, you have a good starting point (we just released a video on the power position that might help you). Keep at it and the distance will come and most importantly don't put too much pressure on yourself, throwing should be fun!
@bdbedard
@bdbedard 7 лет назад
To avoid being nervous you must do the footwork over and over until it becomes second nature. The nerves will begin to go away and will be replaced with confidence when you step in the ring. There are no short cuts. You will need to put the reps in. 80-100 turns per day would do the trick.

I'm a 180 pounds 6'1 freshman in high school, my farthest throw this year is 110'11. Do you have any like motivation or something like that. I'm the best thrower on my track team right now and I'm the youngest

you supply the motivation. be the best that you can be.. no more no less.. always think I CAN, never I Can't. no hot dogging stuff, keep the movement simple, clean, and relaxed. the only time to up the intensity level is the FINISH, not the beginning or the middle. never stop learning the technique. there is a reason the worlds best throwers are often in their 30s and 40s

So I'm running into a problem. In 8th grade I was throwing 125 average, but life got in the way and now it's sophomore year and I'm not able to do the spin like I used to, any tips?
@ThrowingSmarterThrowingFarther
Start with the basics. No need to be working on the full throw until you give your body a chance to remember what it felt like to throw correctly. Start with the standing throw (working the power position). We have a video form the power position on YT. Really focus on getting the lower body ahead of the upper body and turning the right to generate power with your lower body and feeling the stretch in your arms and chest. Once you are feeling good in the power position work on pivot turns.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-U-1CMx4lOr4.html. Again, don't progress to the full throw until you can feel your body in the correct posture and power coming from the lower body. Then begin working on the full turns. If you practice this way and pay attention to hitting the correct positions and getting the lower body involved you should get back to where you were and then some. Good Luck!

Hello! I'm doing Shot Put for my school, and I really want to do discus. At the moment my record for shot is about 24 feet and I'm in the 6th grade! About 6 or 7 feet off of my schools record for the girls shot. Do you have any pointers?
@ThrowingSmarterThrowingFarther
Hi Laiko, sounds like you have a lot of potential. We are planning on filming a Shot Put video this summer. Until then keep in mind the Discus and the Shot share a lot of the same concepts. Power is generated from the legs and the hips, focus on your right leg turning at the finish and don't lead with the upper body. Eric Johnson from the Arete throws club also has some good material on the shot as well. Good luck!
