So I was cleaning a warehouse when I came up with an interesting find: Thrustmaster Grand Prix 1 racing wheel! This was my very first racing wheel I bought back in the 90s. Since I was a poor high school student I went for the cheap option - unlike the more expensive Thrustmaster T2, this wheel didn't include pedals but you had to operate the throttle and brake with your hands.
The early Thrustmaster wheels from the mid 90s were famous for their poor quality and after just couple of months of usage I started to get jitters and input spikes. So it was really no surprise that when I plugged in the wheel almost 25 years later.... it didn't work at all. ALL the potentiometers
were broken. Some completely, some partially but none of them were usable.
So with no idea what I was doing I decided to fix it! Nothing to lose huh?

Go for Thrustmaster T2. Niels did a video on that some time ago, just in case you've missed it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Dvp7ngV8cPI.html I would never had wasted my time for this wheel unless I had an emotional attachment for it being my first wheel. Hand pedals are awful if yo want to do GPL

Lol, the bungie cords were hilarious. I still remember opening up my T2 and seeing those and thinking, wtf. Also, before I could afford my T2 my dad attempted to make a steering wheel out of wood and an old joystick, it was pretty cool, but also not very precise. Wish I still had it.

Yeah the bungee cord I installed.... I tightened it after this video and it was way better. But now it has already loosed elasticity and feels loose again :D

I made Wheel out of a mouse, how you move the old ball are the X and Z axes ! used real fancy old EU Car parts for it. hacking the drivers in the F1 racer game, outrun was the main thing i made it, now it has this GP wheel.

I had one of these back in the day! I liked the paddle throttle/brake, to the point that I’m looking for a newer wheel with this function now (only expensive options really, Logitech G-Pro). I also remember opening it up to find the bungee cord and thinking WTF is this!?!?

Oh god. I remember that my dad wanted to buy this wheel for me at our local retailer in 1999. Gladly this was out of stock and I got an MS Sidewinder (without ffb) instead. It too was a piece of c*** put at least it had pedals.:)

Honestly I don't know how big the price difference was compared to the wheels with pedals but I'd say it was the wrong place to save money :D

Ebay or Amazon and you're all set :D Be prepared for some fixing though, the potentiometers are horrible quality and if they are not broken already they will be in about a week or so.

It's fun watching these being torn down and restored. I really miss the hand pedals, which on a few wheels I've modified for my arcade PCBs, I personally like way better than the foot pedals in the home environment. I would like to modify one of these too, but I'd need to rewire the PS/2 connector and possibly replace the pots or cut the solder tabs. Do you know of a way I could do this and/or do you remember what ohm pots the originals were for the gas and brakes? Would be a great practice for restorations too.
@TedMeat
@TedMeat 2 года назад
I really don't know much about rewireing, I just went the easy way and bought a game port to USB adapter. It should be pretty easy to rewire it to USB but I didn't really take a look at it. You need some sort of a board for it (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ebNNq9FDcIc.html) but the adapter does the same thing. As for the pots I guess the only thing that's important is that they are linear and mono. They looked like this: www.amazon.com/Uxcell-a11100700ux0094-Linear-Rotary-Potentiometer/dp/B016892F36 I just measured the diameter and length of the axels and then ordered similar pots but they sent me the wrong ones. Because I'm inpatient I didn't return them but managed to fit them anyways :D
@ConversusVans
@ConversusVans 2 года назад
After cracking a couple GP1s open to rewire for my Ultimarc A-PAC and Sega Model 3 driving game PCBs, I had an issue with the potentiometers of the hand pedals on both. One gear would not go smooth and just constantly push the pot to its max value. The other unfortunate part is that the 6-pin Mini DIN connector going to the wheel base only has 5 wires, so you would likely need to solder a 6th wire into the connector there, or mount a new connector. Probably more trouble than it's worth. Its successor, he NASCAR Sprint, released two years after the GP1, was a much better wheel and had a better clamp system.

Wow love it Ted. Well done. Just a thought (I'm aware you don't like game aids) what about upping the 'Reduce with car speed' option from 0% as well as tightening the bungie cord more? Again fantastic 😆👍👏
@TedMeat
@TedMeat 2 года назад
Thanks Michael :) I added 10% of low sensitivity zone for the wheel and it's ok on straight line now. Low sensitivity zone is ok but reduce with car speed I don't like because then the steering is not linear and it would drive very differently.
@michaelgott9524
@michaelgott9524 2 года назад
Great solution Ted and didn't know about the reduce with car speed' linear affect.

An interesting blast from the past. I don't know how much I would like using the paddles for acceleration and brakes rather than good old fashioned pedals - and I imagine that does handicap you some what.
@TedMeat
@TedMeat 2 года назад
Yeah it obviously does handicap you. In GP2 accelerating is ok but it's basically impossible to be precise with the brakes, I constantly lock the wheels. However I just realized my three year old daughter can drive with this since she doesn't reach normal pedals with her feet :D

Great video. I actually found mine in the basement. I bought the usb adapter, but it looks like it needs a new potentiometer. I have ch pedals so I think I would only need the potentiometer for the wheel. Do you have a link to the one I need to purchase? Thanks.

Great project! I am also trying to refurbish my ThrustMaster GP1. I needed to design a potentiometer pinion gear replacements, for Throttle/Brake paddles, which are prone to splitting and coming loose.. I posted my design on Thingiverse if anyone needs them. One of my original pots is stamped B250K. After taking some measurements and looking around, I think a drop in replacement pot would be Alpha RV24AF-10-20K-B250K. Do you happen to know what orientation paddle pots should be set prior to reinstall (full clockwise, full counter clockwise or mid point?

Miten sait tuon toimimaan uudemmassa Windowsissa?

@toniristolainen3842
@toniristolainen3842 Год назад
@@TedMeat Oli apua.

I had the same wheel back in the day, mine also started playing up within weeks so it was no longer usable, and even before that it was crap. Was one of the worst 'main xmas presents' from parents of my childhood (I asked for it so can't blame them though). I still don't trust Thrustmaster and wouldn't buy their gear today because of this wheel

Yeah, it was quite bad indeed. However with new pots and a "bungee rope" it was eventually ok. I'm still driving with a Thrustmaster (T500 RS), I've had it for six years now with a lot of mileage and still works like a charm. They clearly have learned their lesson 😃
