Thrustmaster T500RS Sparco Racing Steering Wheel Upgrade - Hub Adapter

Time to upgrade the Obutto R3volution gaming platform by putting a new steering wheel on my Thrustmaster T500RS. I went with a Sparco street wheel because it has tons of padding and feel great in my hands. I used the T500AD adapter from DSD Technology Systems Corporation to adapt the 70mm bolt pattern of the wheel to the native hub based T500RS design. I obtained the wheel for $200 from 425 Motorsports in Bellevue, WA and I couldn't be happier with the end results!
•IGN 8/10 After playing Gran Turismo 5 with the Thrustmaster T500 RS, I never wanted to go back to a PlayStation DualShock controller. But the cost of the system makes it impossible to recommend to all but the most hardcore Gran Turismo 5 fanatics. If you are currently playing GT5 with a standard PlayStation 3 DualShock controller while rolling around on a pile of gold doubloons, then do yourself a favor and pick up a T500. But be warned -- you'll need something sturdy to clamp it to. As much fun as it might sound to hold something called a Thrustmaster in your lap, it's not going to work with this one. Overall, the Thrustmaster T500 RS is a great piece of hardware that does the GT5 name proud. It brings the track alive, but at a terrible price.
•Engadget 6/10 At $599 it's awfully hard to recommend this wheel and pedal combination. The wheel itself has a magnificent feel that's beginning to knock on the door of much more expensive offerings like a Frex or ECCI, and the number of inputs makes managing button-happy cars easier. But, those buttons are hard to find while driving and the rubber coating feels unfortunately low-rent. The massive size of the thing makes it best suited for semi-permanent installations and the limited PS3 compatibility is, for the moment at least, a disappointment. Meanwhile the pedals are overkill yet underwhelming. They're heavy and won't go anywhere but all that weight feels excessive, unnecessary, and adorned with rubber feet that kept falling off. Not exactly what you'd expect for $599. Ultimately either the Logitech G27 or the Fanatec line of wheels offer nearly as good performance at a much more palatable cost -- and with designs less likely to give you a hernia when hauling about the house.
•VirtualR.net So, is the T500 RS as innovative as the long feature list and the rather hefty price tag of 499€/$599 suggests? In one word: Yes! Don't get fooled by the Gran Turismo badge, this wheel is most likely the most advanced product ever offered in this price range. The wheel's precision is unmatched and the very strong & silent force feedback even edges out Fanatec's Turbo S wheel.I´ve reviewed quite a lot of wheels and I´ve never instantly clicked with a new product as I did with the T500 RS. Usually, it takes me a bit of time to get up to speed with a new wheel but the T500 RS gave me instant confidence thanks to the great force feedback and the overall amazing feel provided when driving. Sadly, the pedal unit falls a bit off in terms of features, a load-cell brake would have been a fitting feature to make the pedals match the wheel and make it easier for more professional racers to consider switching to the T500 RS. Thrustmaster has put together a wheel that can compete even with professional wheels from niche-manufacturers that often sell for more than three times the price. And while some competitors might offer some features the T500 RS does not have (more expensive materials, a built-in display) the wheel is certainly the new benchmark in terms of precision, raw force feedback power and overall feel that will satisfy even the most demanding sim racers.
•Simulation World 94/100 This is an amazing product that really has targeted a market and a price point and hit a home run right away. They were a little hard to get hold of for a while but are now beginning to spring up in retail stores in the US and Europe. If in doubt, check Frys.com and amazon.com to see if they are in stock. If you have the cash and are looking to upgrade from a Logitech but can't stomach the price of a ECCI, then this is the wheel for you. Just be prepared for a bit of an adjustment and a learning curve for the fixed paddles. This show is an independent production of Jerry Berg (aka Barnacules). If you want space for the horn button on a Sparco wheel you'll need to buy a couple things. 6 - screws #10-32 X 1" -- The tapered head will fit your wheel screw slot best. 36 - #10 washers 1/2" wide After you've used your self tapping screws on all six holes on your adapter place one screw through at a time, then stack 6 washers between the wheel and the adapter on all screws. This will give you the backspacing for the horn. For other wheels you may need more or fewer washers.

Glad you found it, it's a really good adapter and its made out of a similar material as the original wheel, its nice.

Oops... Just realized there is an audio volume issue one segment of the video. I'm getting a bit better with video editing but still make some mistakes :)

Yup, the horn had to be removed to fit it to the T500RS but I have it in the drawer next to me in case I ever want to try and adapt it.

Yeah, I did get rid of all the buttons which was a bit of a trade-off for sure but I need a wheel to just be a wheel sometimes.
@Barnacules
@Barnacules 11 лет назад
I've used the CSR Elite and the stock wheel is horrible, the GT wheel is amazing though. But the wheel I have on my T500 is an actual production wheel from a car and not a wheel designed for a racing sim.
@MiwokWarriors

Mine came with Allen head screws like the ones u got after. They must have upgraded after seeing this!
@Barnacules
@Barnacules 11 лет назад
Get the clubsport wheel instead, it comes with a real BMW race wheel that is epic. Also if you have the CSR you won't want to mod the wheel since you need the buttons on it to change settings, etc. The T500RS doesn't have any internal settings that are adjustable from the wheel so it's easy to get rid of the buttons on.
@Barnacules
@Barnacules 11 лет назад
There is a Sparco logo on it (on the back and on the center hub (removed for this install) :D And it was purchased at 425 Motorsports which is an official Sparco dealership. So your guarantee is pretty worthless.
@Barnacules
@Barnacules 11 лет назад
Trust me, I do want one bad now :D It was just bad timing. But that being said the T500RS in my opinion is still a stronger base (I've used both) but the real BMW wheel certainly pushes the Fanatec over the stop along with its compatibility with XBOX.
@Barnacules
@Barnacules 11 лет назад
You're probably right, the T500RS is pretty remarkably solid though, that's why I did it.
@Barnacules
@Barnacules 12 лет назад
Depends on which wheel you have, the new BMW wheel is pretty epic but there old style wheels were very plastic like.
@Barnacules

Yes, it has a clutch and you can enable it in game. I now use Fanatec Clubsport V2 pedals because they feel more realistic.

dude i just put a sparco 383 on my t500rs and it's the best mod i have ever done to my rig. thanks for the suggestion. its the performance wheel so it's pretty hard, it's basically metal covered with suede, but i guess because of the larger diameter and stiffer mounting it's absolutely phenomenal. For some reason it became way smoother and feels a lot more like a real car now.
@Barnacules
@Barnacules 12 лет назад
It wasn't available when I purchased this setup. My next wheel will probably be a Fanatec which would be nice because I could also play Forza 4.
@Barnacules
@Barnacules 11 лет назад
I would go for the new Fanatec BMW wheel on the CSR Elite.
@Barnacules

Wow, thanks for letting me know. I was thinking about getting a CSR elite but if the drivers are crap I would want to avoid it.
@Barnacules
@Barnacules 12 лет назад
I paid $100 for the wheel and $40 for the hub adapter to upgrade the T500RS. And the new wheel weighs less then the old wheel since it doesn't have all the buttons and electronics so it won't overtax the unit.

your vids are awesome man, just found your channel and I have to say that im very jealous of your setup! lol anyways im looking to get into sim racing so I was wondering about how much a setup like yours would run me including the frame and such but excluding the wheel upgrade?

The holes in the wheel are called Counter Sink holes
@Ispharel
@Ispharel 11 лет назад
You can mod it to fit most wheels. On a website called simracinghardware they make a plate you can buy for about £27 and you can fit any car wheel. Only problem is you have to fiddle about with some wiring and mount the buttons somewhere you can still use them, otherwise you can't use the wheel settings ect. Other than that it's a good thing to buy. The clubsport is too expensive and can't be used with ps3 or xbox 360.

@bulinski1987

The reason the feel got smoother is mostly because the diameter of the wheel is larger, giving you more leverage to turn the wheel. The extra padding would dampen small twitches, too. I got the adapter and with a Sparco wheel w/suede finish (since most real race cars have suede for optimum grip). The dimensions of the stock self tap screws were #10-32 x 3/4". Instead of drilling out your new adapter, tap the holes first then buy the same dimension screws to your preference.

Cheap wheel rims? Ok. Especially the Fanatec? ARE YOU INSANE?! The GT Wheel Rim is basically the real deal, the Formula 1 still a very nicely crafted rim and even the old Porsche ones from the GT series weren't bad rims at their time. Otherwise good video.

Hey Jerry, Alex here. I've been looking for a way to extend the arm of the T500, so I can mount the wheel "on the floor" and extend the wheel all the way up like in a real racecar. I saw a video of a guy who custom made one for his own cockpit, but his whole video is fast forwarded . . . and it isn't commercially available. If you see one around, please hit me up on FB. Thanks!

Yeah, I'm selling alot of stuff just so i can get the wheel! I have the Driving Force GT, and i just want a better wheel. But the driving force gt is not a bad wheel for starters, i have been racing with a wheel know since 2009 or 2010, and know i want a really awesome wheel, like the Clubsport :)

I just loled when you said that it pisses you off that wheels like the Logitech or even the T500RS doesn't come with a real stearing wheel. How much did you pay for that sparco wheel hum?? the retail price of the sparco wheel you bought acording to sparco usa is only $239, you can buy a G27 for less than that on amazon. Some of the wheels are actualy too heavy for the motors in a G27 or T500RS, and can damage your wheels easily.

It's a nice idea but I guess the down side is that you lose all the button features that are available on the original wheel, and that's a pretty big deal for sim racing so I'd prefer to just keep the original wheel tbh. Why didn't you just buy a small 12 inch leather steering wheel cover? It would've been so much easier and cheaper. Although I will admit it does look a very comfortable wheel to hold that you put on there.
