Thule Air Base is the northernmost military base in the United States, located approximately 1,100 miles (1,770 km) from the North Pole. It is also the coldest US Air Force base, with average temperatures ranging from −20 to 20 °F (−29 to −7 °C) throughout the year.
The base was built in 1951 as part of the Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line, a network of radar stations that stretched across the Arctic to detect Soviet bombers. Today, Thule Air Base is home to the 21st Space Wing, which operates the Thule Air Base Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS).
