For me i love the Thumb pick but the only thing i miss is an overall aggressiveness that i can only get with a flatpick. I do feel more creative with a thumb pick more fluid. Great video as always. Keep them coming!

Yeah totally get you, I love both and will always work at both, if I had to choose though.. hmmm, probably thumbpick as I think my most musical ideas have come from that!

Just found this channel, been listening to psychobilly for a couple weeks now, as a metal guitar player I’m excited to learn something different :)

Enjoy man, I’ve uploaded 70+ videos this year and a good chunk of them are psychobilly transcriptions/lessons and theory stuff that’s relevant! It’s funny you should say that, one of the videos I’m planning is metal style licks for psycho billy (which you probably won’t need help with!)

If you wanted to delve into psychobilly and rockabilly, consider joining my Patreon, it’s only a couple of bucks a month but I have everything from Travis picking and swing chords to full transcriptions of around 15 psychobilly tunes with solos and all, and I add stuff every month. There’s currently 63 members 😎 of course you can get a lot of what you need from my channel anyway but it can’t hurt to mention this!

i can definitely hear the difference.....the thumb pick sounds more mellow/warmer almost like you have flat wound strings on your guitar......the flat pick/hybrid picking has a more biting a little thinner sounding but not in a bad way......more twangy for lack of a better word......so thump pick= more jazzy warm/mellow/clear tone....the flat pick hybrid picking = more biting more rock n roll tone.......this video has shown me i like the sound of the thumb pick better.......

This was honestly SO GREAT. So useful to compare different styles. I grew up learning classical guitar and later in life I picked up electric/acoustic and it feels so unnatural to play with a pick. But hybrid seems to be doable! Added this to playlist, will be practicing like a mad woman :)

Nice! I have a bone disorder and can’t hold a pick anymore. If I use a thumb pick, it’s the plastic tortoise shell pattern one. Other thumb picks sound dull to me. But I’ll file it down so it’s barely past my thumb so I don’t have a huge fin sticking out and hanging up on everything. But what I use most is an acrylic fingernail. I’ll shape it and tape it to my index finger. Sounds great, it’s comfortable and I never drop it.

That’s a great idea, I was once considering getting the nails glued on properly but I knew it would be a waste of time as I constantly get grease in my nails and they break etc!

I feel like you thumbpickers can do more than us flatpickers. I've only tried dunlop thumpicks and they were too tight and hurt. Any suggestions? I just saw Sean Mencher the other night open for Reverend Horton Heat and man can he pick. Sean does all the banjo rolls with a thumb pick and fingers on a Duo Jet. Me and the wife were nerding out on his technique.

Hmmmm. Interesting stuff. I'm not terribly good at thumb picking, but I am trying to get better at it. That said, when I play fingerstyle (or with a thumb pick), I find that I am also more creative. Since, I don't have as much speed at my disposal, I will instead try more banjo rolls, use more open strings, focus on moving vertically rather than box patterns, dynamics, etc. That said, when it is time to tear the paint off the walls, a flat pick will give me more speed and attack. I think it is good to have both in your tool box.
@AdrianWhyte
@AdrianWhyte 3 года назад
Yes!!! That’s it! All my sentiments summed up just about! I guess time is a factor though, you’re kind of splitting your technical practice into two, I often spend months with a thumb pick and then a flat pick but these days I try to be disciplined and keep all facets of the game working!
@FullertonRadioService

@@AdrianWhyte There is this pick holder thing that was designed by a former guitarist in Megadeth. It allows you to lock your standard pick that you use against your thumb. Then, you can go from using it as a thumbpick or as a flat pick when you close your grip on it. I've never used one, but a lot of people have mentioned that they are surprisingly good. The dude from Megadeth uses it as a way of going from a flatpick to freeing up the rest of his fingers for 8-finger style tapping on the neck.

@@FullertonRadioService oh man that is so cool!!!! Is this Friedman? One of my long time friends from school used to be a huge fan of megadeth and aside from always enjoying the stories about how frustrated Dave mustaine is to be second to Metallica (a terrible metric for happiness so to speak!) I was always blown away by the guitar work. I’ve dabbled in multi finger tapping but I don’t quite have the testosterone I used to to want to prove I can do that too!! One of my students has surpassed me in that stuff and is now playing a lot of Midwest emo stuff. Weird nice tunings and lots of tapping and sliding. Very cool. Guitar is awesome isn’t it?
@FullertonRadioService
@FullertonRadioService 3 года назад
@@AdrianWhyte Nah, this was a later cat named Chris Broderick. He was doing a lot of that multi-finger tapping stuff before he hooked up with Megadeth, but I don't know if he ever did that much while in the band. Maybe that's why he left... or maybe Mustaine is just hard to work with! Ha. Yeah, mate. Guitar is a blast. Also, you'll get into a scrap around the Tri-State are if you call it Mid-West Emo. New Jersey wants all the credit! Lol.

Adrian, you have an incredible right hand for a 33 yr old... and if you play 20 more years, I’d still be 15 years ahead of you 🤣. It seems as though there has been a huge increase from a few years back in your right hand fingering. For me, it’s never been a thumb pick, banjo yes, guitar it’s usually no pick or flat pick. And for any number of reasons, my picking right hand is more Merle Travis style using only 2 fingers which I believe in my case, hinders my speed. But so does arthritis! As for hearing any differences between thumb pick and flat pick... hardly noticeable... either way, your performance is excellent. Your jazz style only needs that smooth tone and you’re in!!! Some right hand video guidance is in order.

Thank you Al, and you know, i love the Merle Travis sounds and feel, there’s something about it!! By all means feel free to email/message some stuff you’d like regarding the right hand, I would love to make more on that stuff, inspire me!!

If you want to play Chet stuff use a thumb pick, If you’re doing rockabilly you need the versatility of a flat pick
