Added this feeling of thumbs down through impact, added about 10mph with driver and better contact with all clubs. Crazy, it made my swing feel so much more free and natural! Wish I saw this much sooner…..

You see them thumbs down - ulnar deviation - on most pro golfers. When the thumbs are up that goes hand in hand with lead wrist extending early which opens the face too much. Thumbs down goes hand in hand with keeping the face angle more in control. Glad it helped and thanks for the following us!

I just figured this out in my backyard chipping and googled it for self-validation. Thank you for letting me know I am not about to ruin my game with this!

Glad to be of help - feeling the thumb action really helps promote stability in face angle control.

Have a tendency to roll early in the backswing. Thumbs down to initiate my swing seems to sync everything up. Thx.

The wrist at address was pretty illuminating to me. I realized my wrists have actually been cupped in an effort to be more relaxed.

I love the thumbs down release. It prevents me from flipping the right wrist . It also encourages a flat left wrist and a downward strike producing backspin. All I have to make sure to do is turn powerfully thru the shot as I release my left thumb down.

If you can just add in the notion that when the thumbs are coming to the down position they actually rotate AWAY from the ball then your have indeed stopped the flipping motion. I kind of think of flipping related to the thumbs going way too left way too early. Having the thumbs as them come down point to the right is the antithesis of the flip and like you said leads to much better contact. Thanks for the note and hope you find the other videos on the channel of help as well.

@@AltaViewGolf Thank you for responding. Yes, my move is to release the left thumb downward at about a 45* angle behind the ball on the ball line. My hip turn syncs up with this release, bringing the club face into the ball. When my left wrist goes into full ulnar deviation, it kind of locks my wrists into place preventing the wrist flip breakdown. You have shared the ultimate technique of solid downward contact without flipping. GENIUS !

I viewed this video yesterday. I went out and did what you instructed about the thumbs. Making great contact like never before. Night and day difference. I do have a question regarding the angle of the bottom of my club. When I put my thumbs down, my hands move a little more away from my body. My arms and club are more in a straight line. And not much angle from arms to club. This tends to have the toe of my club pointing down and the heel up. It is no longer level to the ground. Occasionally the toe catches the ground and turns my club. Is the toe supposed to be pointed down when I have a grip with thumbs down? Or am I pushing my hands too far from my body? Any reply would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I noticed in the the first demo the golfer has his thumbs close to his hands with little or no gap. In the second demo the golfer has gaps. Which is correct?

Not sure I understand the nuance of the hand position question - the key thing we were highlighting here is you want the thumbs going to a down position as you come into impact and not an across motion. Down helps close the face and promotes forward shaft lean for better compression. Across - AKA flipping - opens the face and leads to a loss of ball speed at impact.

Are setup in ulnar at address? Do thr thumbs go back into radial in the follow through?
@AltaViewGolf
@AltaViewGolf Год назад
We've found that more ulnar deviation at setup puts you in a position to return to ulnar deviation through impact. You will see a lot of tour level swings where the thumbs are very down at setup, then moves to to radial deviation with the lift of the arms, and then back to ulnar or thumbs down through and post impact and then of course on the full finish it is back to radial. But that is well post impact. Moving towards ulnar through impact helps you have a wrist motion that generates more compression. Early radial through impact is adding loft and can open the face as well.

Does this promote casting?
@AltaViewGolf
@AltaViewGolf 5 месяцев назад
This isn't designed to promote casting. You'll see Nate still has some trail wrist extension at impact. Putting the thumbs down to ulnar deviation is not the same motion as flexion of the wrist. So this leads to the thumbs down and wrist hinged back on the trail wrist with 10-15 degrees of forward shaft lean at impact. Hope that clarifies and thanks for the question.
