It’s a GREAT game inspired by the obvious super punch out. The game oozes style with its beautiful visuals. I started the battles on rookie just to study the patterns and eventually beat them all on the hardest difficulty. It’s a small studio and I applaud them for taking on a genre that MANY have failed in. There’s only one punch out clone I’ve ever liked, and then there was creepy brawlers which was…meh. Far from my favorite, But it was worth the $13. I got it as soon as it released because I’m a huge nerd for punch out since I was 4 years old, So for all those like me definetly check it out for the starting price! For the casual punch out crowd or to those that have never played it, wait for a sale. It’s a solid 7.5/10
So that ending that teases what I thought was somesort of hidden final boss is a lie? Damn. Should've gave a real ending then. I hope there is a a patch for this game or a thunder ray 2 that better copies the punch out (SNES preferably) system. Special KOs dependent on your super strikes, being able to stun your opponent instead of just wailing on the punches almost randomly, more responsive gameplay, that kind of stuff. And make the charge punches more useful, like they could be used to do damage to your opponent's guard or break through special defenses or something. Also I think everyone has win streaks like that because wherever in the galaxy they come from, they were basically like Thunder ray. This is basically a tournament that collected all the unbeatable people throughout the universe to see who is the most "unbeatablest" of them all.
This is literally the FIRST negative review I have heard about this. For the price point, it is a blast. All the enemies are unique and deal a decent challenge(especially on the higher difficulties). I agree, it seems unfinished and is quite short. The little it provides(however) js a good time. There is clearly a plan for a sequel and I so hope they go through with it!
I honestly liked this game. But, yeah; everything you said is pretty accurate. I found the bosses pretty simple and mashing shouldn't work as well as it did, and the final boss was really underwhelming. I understand why the alien bosses are undefeated considering their version of boxing is a deathmatch. I wish this game had more fighters, some sort of title defense-like mode, and a proper final boss.
Loved the NES one, always hated the SNES one TBH and this looks half done and I hate saying that cause games take a fuck ton of work and I get this took time, but 8 fights is way too few as the reviewer said, when it compares itself to ones with much much more content.
You pretty much nailed it. I didn’t have any real trouble until I hit Evil Rico, and the final boss took me about 3 hours of constant failure before I finally cheesed his final mega attacks. The graphics are amazing but something just feels off overall. I still say it’s worth a play on a $5 sale if you can find it
Damn, just learned about this game a week ago and I had high hopes for it, sadly it doesn't look like a winner. How do games get inspired by past IP's, only to miss the mark by so much in the end? Eight fighters, really? Punch-Out is a franchise that doesn't have nearly enough fan style games, as it's a simple game graphically speaking, but is all about the game play. With every new Nintendo Direct, I always hope they'll revisit the franchise, but the Wii game seems to be the last we might ever get. Super was my favorite of the franchise, and I still play that one pretty regularly, but all the games had things to like, even the arcade coin-op.
It is not an expensive game. The number of fighters is fine considering the price and it came from a small indie developer. It is based on super punch out but the style is drastically different. That is like say COD is just a counter strike rip off or your videos are just ign rip offs. There are valid criticisms such as the slow response of inputs in relation to the speed of opponent actions meaning you can’t block in tome even if you react fast enough. Other issues such as the spikes in difficulty and lack of telegraphs for mix up moves (especially E Rico) but all in all it was a good attempt/hommage to super punch out, although doesn’t like up to the predecessor’s level.
also i switched to type 2 and it shows that i have type 2 set, but the buttons still acted as default some reason.at that point i didnt even care, i just kept right high punching then blocked or dodge, it didnt even matter and i didnt even care anymore
This game is the perfect embodiment of "all style no substance" The game is beautifully animated, but in trying to one-up their predecessor Punch-Out in wacky character design they somehow managed to make them more bland. I'm never going to remember Back Breaker or Millennium Cobra, but im sure as hell going to remember Soda Popinski, Mr Sandman, Disco Kid, etc. for the rest of my life. Ill never understand that they could've taken from Mike Tysons Punch Out, one of the most satisfying and fun games on the NES, or the 10/10 masterpiece in game design that was Punch Out Wii, but instead decided to take from the bad, boring one on the super nintendo.
Thunder Ray is a disappointing as a Punch-Out game due to the lack of depth and that it was released unfinished. But goddamn is it a billion times better than Power Punch II, the original "boxer goes and fights aliens in space" game riding on the success of Punch-Out.
shouldnt be more than 10 bucks, 15 is too much i 100%ed the achievements in about 2 hours, maybe less and most of that time was the super cheap final boss that can kill you in 1 or 2 hits of a 3 hit combo of death, that seems to be unblockable and undodgeable, only way of esacping it is if you saved up super power special bar to interrupt it then after him the cutscene says ray challenges the mastermind to battle, but there is no fight against no mastermind, its the end of the game, and on the title screen says dlc coming soon, it better be free since the game was so short plus that last boss was so cheap and annoying
wanted to let you know! The reason Thunder Ray sounds strange with its "voice acting" is because all the voice acting is done by A.I! Very disappointing honestly
It reslly is disappointing. Money to have beautiful animation, gameplay code, and to have platform ads but none for voice actors? Shame shame.. Continues to prove one of the reasons the current strike is about.

Requirement is pattern recognition of the enemies. Your review is thorough, but its conclusion inaccurate over time. This is on sale on the Switch store (at the time of this writing) for $8.00
