It boggles my mind that the powers that be didn’t give them the golden ticket….they had the full package music and business wise! All the songs were singable, they had a great look with the singer all the ladies liked.
Would you believe that Danny couldn't speak for about 5 days prior to that gig as he'd been poorly and they wondered if they would even perform the gig?!
Was there that hot sunny day as a clueless 18 year old. What do I remember ...Whitesnake = disappointing, Aersomith = very good, avoiding 2 litres of piss being thrown across the crowd = WTF!!! But one memory sticks out, and that is Thunder f****** rocked it. People always say about Danny on vocals (yes he was/is great) but Luke / Snake / Ben on guitar and Gary on drums during their heyday and their timing is absolutely spot on. For me they were the stand out band on the day. What a day, so many happy memories.
I was there in 1990, my first festival at the age of 22, never seen Thunder before and they made the day for me - they were first on and followed by Quireboys who were good but not quite up to the standard of these guys on the day, they played a blinder - like their careers depended upon it - but enjoying the moment too! The weather was just awesome, me and the coach-load of lads we went there with got mid way into the audience and parked ourselves right next to some 'hells angels' who turned out to be great guys, drinking some mysterious 'peach tasting petrol' which we sampled during the gig (shit it blew your head off), and one of our guys had a bit of 'go for the road' which went down well with them. It was a great mixture of music and company which made an awesome concert, one of which I feel privelidged to have been part of and a memory which will stay with me for ever!
We had to watch it on MTV in the US - watched for the Crue and Skid Row.... 1st time seeing this band - and loved it ❤️!! I've been a fan ever since. Wish we could have been there 😪
Right there at 0.23 seconds in, Danny knows he’s got the hold park in his hands and everything him and the band have done since those old days in south London have led to this moment.
If this is REALLY live and vocals not dubbed over the top, then this bloke is the greatest rock singer I have ever heard & ever will hear !!! ....... Fkn remarkable voice
What a blistering concert this was Thunder blew me away Danny sings his nuts off and Lukes playing was off the scale.Their performance on Don't Wait for Me defies belief
Marketing, publicity and promotion. Not much of that was available when Thunder were coming up, nor afterwards. But they are at the top now because they earned it. They're the real deal and they have a large army of fans.
Love coming back to watch this now and again. My first Donington aged 17. Went to see Aerosmith and Whitesnake. Wasnt aware of Thunder at the time. One of the best days of my life. Brilliant opening set. Seen them a few times since.
i was only 16 and couldnt though.was lucky in the fact that radio 1 were there the whole day and me and my mates got drunk listening to it in his back garden...went the next year though.great memories!!!!!!!!!
I have always been a HUGE fan of this band. Even now they still sound amazing. Wow! I will admit though that I have always had a thing for men with long hair. :-)
I was there remember it like it was yesterday best band by far that day saw Danny & Ben doing an acoustic set the other night and Danny's voice is still amazing
yeah I was near the front, thunder were loud!! lol..poison's soundcheck was all over the place....whitesnake started off slow but kitten got claws was out of this world!! lol
Having seen them at Pontypridd just before I knew they would be special. But blow me they took this shot and played the crowd like a fiddle. Best Donington opening band ever 🤘
@@robjones7556 my mistake I thought it was 92 coz thunder played on that day,,I was 14!so no your right I wasn't there I was at 1992 with, maiden,, slayer,,thunder,,w.a.s.p. the almighty,,skid row...
i went up to see aerosmith and this amazing band came on and sang out lyrics that we can all relate to been following them since travelled over to london for their last concert 2009 still sounded the same 20 years later
I agree totally. I really don't think their name helped. They were as strong as Free and Bad Company. Danny sounds so influenced by Paul Rodgers doesn't he? He can still sing like that now too!
I remember back in the day there was a "video magazine" that you could buy on VHS called "Hard n Heavy". One of the episodes was a special on Monsters of Rock 1990, and while the focus was on Coverdale and Vai, they had a short clip of this song. Back then there obviously no iTunes or RU-vid, so if your local record store didn't stock and artist you were screwed. Thunder got no love here is Australia and I think I just about wore that section of video tape out watching that clip over and over. You UK/US people have no idea how lucky you were. Back then Australia was totally cut off, no one ever toured here (except Bob Jovi and GnR). It's a better world these days for sure!!
mate I have always said how lucky I was watching all the great bands that toured our way been lucky enough to see most I wanted. metallica 5 times, skid row 7 times, motley crue twice ac/dc twice, malmsteen, alice cooper megadeth kiss ,scorpions, cinderella plus many others just to name a few . man I know how lucky I am plus loads still tour our way, condolences from the uk hope they come to Australia now ?
Wus there Thunder stole the show once again-underrated Giants! Whitesnake- not the best they ever done by far -Aerosmith always effin brill! and I think Quireboys-good.
I was there. Definitely best band of day. Fuck Whitesnake. Coverdale was absolutely shit. I've never heard Danny Bowes do a bad gig yet! Come to think of it, not heard a bad Thunder song yet either.
I love the fact the drummer is a frumpy bald guy with Austin Powers glasses on. Wearing an oversized tshirt cushes not really in shape. While the rules of the guys are in skin tight jeans and shirtless with long hair.
