@davidl.7027 6 лет назад
@Job Nonnekens it's a joke. Relax. But it's true the Zippo is definitely heavy and big compared to a bic. of course it's loud. That's an iconic part of a Zippo. Everything he said is true. Loud, heavy, takes up more space, and wastes fuel. But this is an iconic, historical American invention. You don't carry it because it's lighter, smaller or quieter than alternatives. You carry it for all the great things about, despite the many negatives. I love my flawed zippos
@ebgdsbdssl4195
@ebgdsbdssl4195 5 лет назад
But theres literally no reason zippos have to be inefficient though. I hate this, and I hate how whenever people talk about them they just act like its an intrinsic part of the design that cant be avoided. All you have to do to make a zippo-like design not waste fuel is add an o-ring on the case. theres a chinese seller called war-armor that actually does this, they have sturdier more durable hinges too. they just use a thicker case, with an edge on the top half of the case that pulls away from its inner edge, and a ledge on the bottom half of the case that draws away from its outer edge, and has an o-ring fitted on it. BAM. Fuel will evaporate out of the wick while its closed, but it will never leak out of the case, and only a little bit will be able to evaporate before theres nowhere for any more to evaporate to.

Zippos are popular precisely because they are reliable, sure you have to refill them and the flint needs replacing but overall they are more dependable than a gas lighter. I bet that no longer works in ten years time with constant use. A zippo will last a lifetime.

Even with butane, over time it will evaporate from the container. Unless the seal is flawless, it will slowly dwindle down. I have a few old butane lighters from maybe 12 or 15 years ago, never used them but the butane is down to about half full, just sayin.
@TheModernSurvivalist
@TheModernSurvivalist 9 лет назад
+deafomega (YoGattoGatto) A few years beats a few days!! Besides, the Thunderbird seems to hold on very well. Months go by and a I dont see much gas being leaked. Again, much better than something I KNOW I'll have to refll every week.
@deafomega
@deafomega 9 лет назад
+TheModernSurvivalist meh, I would rather have long term solutions. Butane in your lighter will run out after a while, even if not evaporating out. You will eventually use it up, and you may not always be able to get more fuel. I often just go with a simple magnifying lens to start fires, and fire strikers or flints at night. Pretty long term solutions with those, and the lens is a nice option if you are able to use one correctly. I would use this in the daily life situations, seems nicer than most lighter options. But for long term survival, I prefer the lens even over the fire striker.
@TheSavageGentleman
@TheSavageGentleman 8 лет назад
+deafomega (YoGattoGatto) It's best to have more than one option. It gets cloudy, it's night, high humidity etc basically when you might need it most a lens won't be helping you. A ferro rod, is a great back up, but when materials are damp or you're in a high humidity environment you're boned unless you have a supply of dry tinder (which puts you again, with an exhaustible resource). My point, it's best to have back ups and everything runs out eventually.
@deafomega
@deafomega 8 лет назад
I usually have a few back up options, but a lens is nearly unlimited. I have a lighter, extra flints for spark wheeling if it is out of fuel, and matches coated with nail polish in a pill bottle with dryer lint

Ok. I did wonder why the Costner story , but once I saw where you were going with it I was hooked. Never seen waterworld but iWork's have spotted that BIG mistake straight away! As an ex smoker this gas insert means I can now have one of my Zippos handy all the time to light the wood burner, gas torch , a candle whatever and know it's going to work even though it may not be in daily use. I used to get skin irritation on my left thigh from having a regularly refilled Zippo in my jeans pocket. If this had been available 30 years ago I'd have got one. But I've just been on eBay after seeing your vid and bought one now! Cheers for posting it , chap

Why bother ?? Just buy a cheap disposable butane lighter. Or better yet, get a modern jet flame butane lighter. The whole idea of a vintage Zippo is that it's a wick type lighter and it used a naptha based fluid. The whole thrill of a Zippo it that naptha smell and the wick and the fact that it's a genuine Zippo inside and out.

I accidentally figured out a way to keep my Zippo from drying out. I don’t smoke so I carry a Zippo just to stay prepared. So I don’t pull my Zippo out every 2 hours. What I did was put my Zippo in a small zip lock bag (the kind that little screws come in when you buy furniture or something like that). I reinforced the bag with tape to keep it from getting a hole. I put it in the bag to keep it water proof in case I somehow end up getting wet. What I found was the Zippo does not dry out in the plastic bag! I carry it in my pants pocket where it gets rather warm, yet, it does not dry out. I’ve been carrying it this way for over a month!

Old Zippos last forever, too, when the lid is sealed as it should be. It's hard to believe people have forgotten how to do this. It just takes a couple of minutes. The insert is really very, very silly. It's the last thing you would want in a very long term survival scenario. Just buy a BIC. A BIC isn't as good as a well-maintained Zippo, but it's ten times as good as a Butane insert. At least a BIC has a ferro rod inside it that's large enough o ttake out and use with a scraper.

I liked Water World and Jeanne Tripplehorn. He does say one thing important at 3:18 the wadding that comes in Zippos is rayon, if you replace the rayon with cotton, and you have no fuel and need to make a flame, you can use some of the cotton wadding and light it on fire with the flint spark. The rayon will not light.

Back before I quit I used refillable butane lighters for a long time, everyone I ever had would run out in 2 weeks to a month, even if you didn't use it, it will eventually leak out. The refillables would go flat in a month or two even if they weren't used. The only ones I found that didn't really leak were the non refillables, I had a sack with about a dozen or so in it when I quit a long time ago, about half of them have leaked out all their butane, about half have retained most of their butane, so when I need to light something I can pull one out and use it.

It was so nice to learn the flame tuning trick. I don't like being limited. Flame should go from small to insane in my opinion and now it does. There are certainly benefits in butane lighters. It allows also using the lighter sideways when lighting candles for example. I still like old fashion gasoline lighter but i need to store it in freezer to prevent the excess evaporation. Freezer does the job very well by the way.

I think the Zippo Yellow Flame is better actually after testing both for a long time the Zippo Yellow flame holds up. The Thunderbird does have a problem with the cam after heavy use, and the wheel is not as thick as the Zippo so it won't produce as good a spark. But it is the ultimate lighter if you can get one that doesn't break, the only problem I have with the Zippo butane insert is lack of flame adjustment.

John Stoner For Life 77 Zippo's Blu2 does not have an adjustable flame. With their flint-wheel, as soon as the lid is opened a Zippo will vent butane making tricks an expensive past time.. I have a half dozen Zippo's, including a couple Armor ones. The Thunderbird I have (high polish chrome) has a flat ring like a Zippo Armor, I looked at it because it looked like a Zippo and I've counted myself as a Zippo Guy, but the adjustable flame is what made me give the T-Bird with a blue-flame insert a try and it has become my daily carry. I do wish the T-Bird had the weight of a Zippo Armor. A traditional Zippo is wind-resistant, a single blue torch by any maker is very wind-resistant. From my experience, only a multiple blue torch is wind-proof. On another note, a naphtha fuel for any lighter is too sickly sweet for my taste, so I use rubbing alcohol in my Zippos. If TSHTF, a Zippo is what you'd want for the fuel options, but you can't braze with a standard Zippo. I've never had a lighter "dry up" as opposed to being used up.

William Miller change the wick and curl it up in little "S's", you'll get a solid 2-3 weeks out of it before needing to refill. Just some random info

Is there a possibility of having one of these in a bag and the lid somehow opens releasing the gas in your bag creating a fire hazard?

Thanks for the great vid I'm gonna pick one up. I work in an oilfield plant where bics aren't aloud because of the (possibility of it striking a spark in your pocket) its a bullshit rule but you can be fired for noncompliance.

Yeah sure if you put a butane insert in your zippo it would hold its fuel longer but finding tanks of butane would be hard also if you need to fill it with butane you cant use improvised lighter fuel like gasoline

Dude goes on and on about Kevin fucking Costner. I was surprised he didn't reference "Fields of Dreams" since I'm pretty sure he used a zippo in that movie as well. Also, why would you invest in something that only has a 2 year warranty ? Zippo lighters have lifetime warranties, so if you ever had any issues...you could send it in for a FREE fix. Other companies make this same adapter, so I'm guessing that Thunderbird couldn't renew its patent or sold the trademark rights.

MrSniperdude01 One would invest in something that has 2 years of warranty because said thing doesn’t dry out all the lighter fluid in 5 fucking days, wasting fuel and one’s money. Very simple, you must be dense not to understand something so simple. Your comment was pointless. Also so what he talked about Kevin Costner? There are other Zippo videos out there

Sorry but Zippo is just that Zippo. I have several of them as a collector. Including one in a Tin that was sold for D-Day's 40th anniversary and never used it. I will use a $10-$20 zippo but, I will not use the ones that are collectors. I bought the D-day one back in 1995 at the mall in Beaverton OR. And kept it all theses years untouched and still with everything in tact. Aslo do you know what the series means on a zippo lighter? That will tell you if it is collectable as well.

+Speedy McGee I keep my Zippo in the "extra" little pocket pants manufacturers put at the top of the right pocket. I can keep it upright all day in that pocket; and because of that, my Zippo never actually leaks into my pocket. So I never have red, irritated skin where I keep my Zippo. Although I agree with the "smell" part. However, if your butane lighter does in fact leak into your pocket (such as the trigger being pressed accidentally or the case cracking) you'll have a far WORSE smell of rotten eggs due to the fact that butane contains a bitterant.

Captain Obvious I believe that extra little pocket was originally for a pocket watch.

+Dion Moir Well, I'm glad pants manufacturers still put that on pants despite the fact that pocket watches are no longer used because a Zippo fits in there perfectly.

I dislike butane lighters because I can never tell when it's full. I can never tell if the butane is even going into the lighter.

Try putting it against a strong light. You can usually see the level of the gas that way.

Zippo isn't putting those inserts out. So BEWARE. Zippo did make butane lighters but the Thunderbird isn't it. Zippo had life time warranty on theirs that they still honor even tho no longer producing them.

Yes, these are not made by Zippo I know. But the ones I have have been 100% relaible over the years. Sure you could get a bad one but I would say it is not the most common occurance. FOr the price, they are pretty great in my opinion.
