I was very lucky to catch this formation flight of the US Air Force Thunderbirds heading to and returning from the Oregon International Air Show today. Would have loved to catch the F-22 Raptor as well, but the timing didn't work out. Maybe tomorrow! Anyway, love the coordination these guys have; it's incredibly impressive.

Fantastic camerawork! Surprised they are using the north runway. I was at the airshow on Friday, and #6 never showed, so #5 did all solo acts completely solo with no opposing/mirror solo, sadly. And it seemed #4 dropped out just before the end of the show (it almost seemed they ended the show early after #4 dropped -- was odd to see the diamond make passes as a 3-bird triangle). So Friday was an off day, but I still enjoyed seeing the T-Birds fly. Glad to see both #4 and #6 and take off and land with the group today. Interestingly, #5 and #6 did do the full solo routines together before the official show in an apparent practice round on Friday morning, but of course I had to watch that from the road off airport while we were lined up with traffic to enter the show.

That's interesting and quite odd. There was also a 7th aircraft parked here; I'm assuming it was probably just a backup as the F22 had a backup, and the F35 in the 2019 airshow had a backup but I'm not certain about how the Thunderbirds do things.

@@PortlandAviation I think the #7 is for backup, so I’m guessing the #6 cancel happened after takeoff. I’m told a single caution light takes them out of the show, which I don’t blame them for, and there would be no time to spin up #7 during the show. Interestingly, I recall a Thunderbirds show in Hillsboro in the pre-2001 era where one of the diamond four peeled off early in the show and quietly landed as the show continued without skipping a beat. IIRC, The show the next day featured #7 and ran with the full 6-bird format. (This was before they staged them at PDX for security reasons). The show carried on with the remaining triangle and both solos.

Ya so, they had two birds down on Friday and today they were all lined up on the runway when the slot pilot taxied back to parking. He ran over to the spare jet and they fired it up and he took off. He then joined the formation in the middle of the show. I’ve been helping these guys at pdx for the past five days, got to chalk the t-birds on Thursday when they came in.

Too bad the solos didn’t do an unrestricted climb to 10000

Awesome man! I got them up close and personal from the cellphone area on July 29, and saw a glimpse of their arrival on the 30th. 👍👍👍

Where was the air show ? These pictures are an air show in themselves ! There is something almost magical-- watching those slow landing approaches with all the gear out.

It was in McMinnville, all the aircraft flew in from PDX or HIO. They had an F22 demo as well.

I’m not sure how often you shoot video at PDX but I was looking around on flightradar24 and just found this Boeing 747 DreamLifter that is scheduled to land at PDX at 11:32am (about 1.5 hours). I shoot plane photos/videos and used to live near Portland and I would hate finding out I missed a cool plane. I’m not sure if you have it already planned to take video of it, since you often have very cool and rare planes 👍 reg/tail # is N249BA

..ah just saw your comment that the airshow was in McMinville. Are they still doing the one in Hillsboro?

Next year they will be doing it in both McMinnville and Hillsborough to my understanding, this year and last were only in McMinnville
